Mini Golf

Archive: 7 posts

Hello community!

I'm here to showcase my first level; some mini golf. Spent about 50 hours of create mode on this with all the logic and debugging, but I'm proud of the result. Getting mostly positive ratings but I'd like to hear more detail on what people like and dislike.

Keep in mind that I'm less of a designy type of guy and more of a thinky type. I spent about 95% of my time working with logic.

Personally, something I would like to improve is the environment. I wanted to have a grass background, some various scenery such as bushes, and a path from one hole to another. Unfortunately the grass in LBP was not designed for a top-down game and doesn't look as good as I want it. So I settled for star field as I thought it was easy on the eyes and relaxing.

I struggled to come up with 9 holes. I think I was just too picky, though. Perhaps I can solve that if I can simulate elevations. There were some other things I wanted to add but once I got to this point I stopped before I could break something again.

Anyway, just tossing this out there and seeing what happens. Would love to hear some positives and negatives.

I'd like to give this one more try here on the forums for input. I've updated with some tweaks and haven't heard anymore out of bounds reports. Hopefully they're gone for good.

I'm currently working on a solution to increase the pace of the game by decreasing the time it takes the ball to stop. This has been the problem I've heard the most. Increasing the dampening even just a couple percent is not an option as it makes the ball feel too sluggish just after the hit and still takes a while to stop, sometimes not even decreasing the turn time at all. It also can't reach some of the holes in one hit if I do this. I'm trying some things and will hopefully have something ready to be tested and released today or tomorrow.

I've had a couple requests for shot clocks and want to ask for opinions on this. I can see how someone not going on their turn could be annoying but I don't want the players to feel rushed. Maybe a 30 second clock with a "three-strikes-your-out" policy, but I'll worry about that after I fix the turn pacing.

Well....I've already played and commented on this level so I don't need to tell the OP what I think, this is more a shout to LBP community that haven't played this amazing golf game.

Played this with the missus and we had such fun. One of the best sports games on LBP2 as far as I'm concerned.....Brilliant, brilliant job.

Oh....and have you tried messing about with the global gravity to see what effect that has on when the ball comes to rest? Obviously I'm not sure what mechanics you've used and whether that has any effect at all, but, if it does, then I suppose you could also use the gravity tweakers to help you emulate elevation/gradient. Just a thought ;-)2011-02-10 00:44:00

Thank you all for the positive feedback. You have no idea how good it makes me feel, especially being new to creating.

I got an update out sooner than I thought. tweaked quite a few little things to decrease wait time. I'm pretty happy with it and it's about as quick as it can get without making the ball feel like it's rolling in tar.

Another thing I'd like feedback on is it's difficulty. Do you think it's too difficult or easy. I've heard both in the reviews and tags so I'm assuming it's about right

Also, a question since I'm newer to creating. I've noticed quite a bit of the flashing loading screen and lag during most games when I join random people. Could this be anything to do with all the behind the scenes stuff going on trying to stay in sync? There's quite a lot happening.

Edit: I haven't, Gaz. But I'll take a look and experiment with it. Thanks!
