Majora's Mask or Ocarina of Time?

Archive: 20 posts

This one of the ultimate LoZ debate question? Which on is better MM or OoT? Lets compare the story and the villain.
Ocarina of Time

A youth named Link sets out on a quest to prevent the thief Ganondorf, the prime antagonist of the Legend of Zelda series, from obtaining the Triforce, a magical relic of omnipotent power, an event foretold by the prophetic Princess Zelda. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ganondorf succesfully obtains part of the Triforce. By traveling back and forth through time using the mythical Master Sword, Link must amass the Six Medallions needed to defeat Ganondorf and restore peace to Hyrule.
Majoras Mask

Link finds himself in the land of Termina, a parallel world to Hyrule, featuring many characters similar to Ocarina of Time characters. A mysterious mask known as Majora's Mask has been stolen by a mischievous imp known as the Skull Kid and is being used to summon the Moon to destroy the entire land of Termina. Link must stop the destruction within three days.

Vilians
Gannondorf

Ganondorf is the primary antagonist; an evil Gerudo mystic seeking the omnipotent Triforce, Ganondorf attempts to obtain the Spiritual Stones of Forest, Fire and Water, which serve as keys to the Sacred Realm, where the Triforce rests. Using his unspoken magical powers and hordes of evil minions, Ganondorf attempts to wrest control over the Spiritual Stones from the leaders of the Kokiri, Goron and Zora races. After the Great Deku Tree, leader of the Kokiri, refuses to give Ganondorf the stone, the evil Gerudo places a death curse on the wise tree. To blackmail Darunia, leader of the Gorons into giving up the Goron's Ruby, he fills the Dodongo's Cavern with evil creatures and seals the entrance with a boulder, his plan being that the Gorons will eventually give him the stone in order to prevent death from starvation. Finally, to obtain the Zora's Sapphire, Ganondorf sends parasites that infect Lord Jabu-Jabu, the Zora's guardian deity, in hopes of stealing the stone from Princess Ruto, who frequently visits Jabu-Jabu.

The youth Link, of the Kokiri race, has increasingly troubled dreams as Ganondorf comes closer to achieving his goal. One day, a fairy by the name of Navi awakens Link and brings a request from the Great Deku Tree that he go see him. The Great Deku Tree explains to Link about the curse placed on him, as well as the evil Ganondorf. He asks Link to venture inside him and defeat the originator of the wicked curse, Queen Gohma. Link successfully does so, but the tree reveals that he had been doomed to die before Link had even begun his quest. After explaining the creation of Hyrule and the Triforce, the wise tree then asks Link to meet Zelda, princess of Hyrule in Hyrule Castle. Link is also given the Spiritual Stone of Forest, not fully understanding its true purpose yet, and the Great Deku Tree withers. Link travels to Hyrule Castle and meets with the prophetic Princess Zelda, who had foreseen their meeting in her dreams. She explains to Link that along with the Spiritual Stones, the Ocarina of Time as well as the "Song of Time" are needed in order to enter the Sacred Realm. Zelda is convinced that together, they can manage to get to the Triforce before Ganondorf and stop his evil plans.

Link collects the two remaining Spiritual Stones, but as he returns to the castle, he sees Zelda riding away from the castle together with her nursemaid Impa. Before they disappear out of sight, Zelda throws the Ocarina of Time into Hyrule Castle Town's moat. Suddenly, Ganondorf appears before Link, their encounter being a fulfillment of Link's nightmares. Link attempts to confront Ganondorf, but is easily defeated by a blast of magic from Ganondorf, who then continues to chase after Zelda. Link dives into the moat to recover the Ocarina of Time, and as he touches it, Princess Zelda appears before him in a vision and teaches him the "Song of Time". With all the required keys to the Sacred Realm, Link ventures within the Temple of Time and finds the chamber where the legendary Master Sword rests. As he touches the sword, he fulfills an ancient prophecy regarding the Hero of Time, destined to battle great evil. However, since he is too young to be the hero, he is taken away and sealed within the Temple of Light for seven years. The path to the Triforce is left open, and Ganondorf sees his chance to take the Triforce; however, as he touches it, the Triforce shatters into three pieces; Power, Wisdom and Courage. As Ganondorf's inner balance of power, wisdom and courage is not fully balanced, the Triforce he values most is left in his hand. The pieces of Wisdom and Courage are secretly given to Zelda and Link, respectively. While not being able to obtain the full power of the Triforce, Ganondorf usurps the throne of Hyrule and transforms the once peaceful land into a wasteland of fear and horror.

Seven years later, Link awakens within the Chamber of the Sages, the events that occurred explained to him by Rauru, the Sage of Light. To defeat Ganondorf, Link must awaken the Six Sages who hold the power to seal Ganondorf away. Link completes the dungeon of the ruined future Hyrule and awakens all the sages, many of whom he already knew. After the awakening of the final sage, Link is summoned to the Temple of Time. Here Sheik, a mysterious Sheikah who had aided him throughout his quest to awaken the sages, reveals her true identity to be that of Princess Zelda. Zelda presents Link with Ganondorf's weakness, the Light Arrow. However, the two are discovered by Ganondorf, who takes Zelda away to his castle. Link breaks the seal on Ganon's Tower and confronts Ganondorf at the top of the tower. Ganondorf commands Link to give him the Triforce of Courage. After a fierce battle, Ganondorf appears to have been defeated, but with his last ounce of strength, attempts to bring down his castle onto Zelda and Link, who narrowly escape before the castle collapses. As they believe to have won, however, a noise is heard from the rubble, revealing itself to be Ganondorf, who uses the power of the Triforce of Power to transform into Ganon. Link weakens Ganon with the Master Sword until Zelda manages to use her power to hold him, allowing Link to deal the killing blow. The Seven Sages then work together to seal Ganondorf away. However, Ganondorf claims that he will return, as long as the Triforce of Power is in his hand. This was the first game where he appeared as a human figure.
Majora Mask

The Happy Mask Salesman, in fear that a great disaster could befall Termina, tells the story of Majora's Mask to Link, just after lifting the Deku Scrub curse placed on him by the Skull Kid. The mask is introduced as an accursed item from legend. It is said to have been used by a mysterious ancient tribe in its hexing rituals. The legend goes on to say that an evil and wicked power comes upon the one who wears the mask. But the troubles caused by Majora's Mask were so great that their folks sealed the mask in shadow forever, preventing a catastrophe and future misuse. The tribe eventually vanished too, and the true nature of the mask was no longer known.

Many years later, the Happy Mask Salesman, a strange collector of masks, went to 'great lengths' in a quest to find the legendary mask. When he uncovered it, he seemed to immediately regret it: he later claims that he could sense a 'dark omen brewing'. Because the Happy Mask Salesman never tries to implicate anyone else in the mask's release, it is assumed that the great lengths he went to to obtain it involved unsealing it from the shadow. Later, while traveling through the Lost Woods, the Happy Mask Salesman was knocked out and robbed of the mask by an imp known as the Skull Kid and his two fairy companions, Tatl and Tael. Although Tatl later acknowledges that the Skull Kid felt rejected because his friends had left him and nobody wanted to play with him, she claims this didn't explain his attack. This indication that the Skull Kid was acting abnormally suggests the mask had some influence over the Skull Kid even while carried by the Mask Salesman. The Mask's use of its influence to escape the Happy Mask Salesman would indicate it was in some way restrained or unfulfilled under the Mask Salesman's ownership. Its success at escaping shows the lack of control the Mask Salesman had over the mask's activity after its retrieval.

The power residing within the mask took control of the Skull Kid and his personality changed gradually from a that of a mischievous child to a that of a dangerous madman. The Skull Kid uses the power of the mask to transform Link into a Deku Scrub. Majora, the creature inside the mask brought to life, forces the Skull Kid to manipulate the Moon of Termina. The moon is taken out of its orbit and is set to crash into Termina. Also, the Skull Kid starts using his powers all over Termina for mischief, including transforming Kafei into a child, injuring Koume, threatening to steal the Moon's Tear from Shikashi's Astral Observatory, contaminating the water of the regions of Woodfall and Great Bay, creating a perpetual winter in Snowhead, fooling the Gerudo Pirates, and haunting Ikana with undead creatures by opening the Stone Tower's doors. Other acts of vandalism have been attributed to the Skull Kid as well, but others are implied to have been involved in these.

However, Link stumbles upon the alternate reality and eventually manages to save the Moon from crashing into the world by calling the Four Giants, whom he had rescued earlier. For this, the mask abandons Skull Kid and retreats into the inner sanctum of the Moon. Link and Tatl follow into the Moon for a battle with Majora. Inside the Moon, Link finds five Lunar Children running around a big tree, all of which are wearing masks; four are wearing the Boss Remains, and the fifth one wears Majora's Mask. When Link speaks to the child, he will take Link to the final battle. If Link has collected all of the game's masks and traded them to the children, the one wearing Majora's Mask will offer to play a game of "good guys against bad guys," and present him with the Fierce Deity's Mask, the most powerful transformation mask. After the defeat of Majora's three forms, Majora's Mask, Majora's Incarnation and Majora's Wrath, the mask seemingly loses its power and sentience, and the Happy Mask Salesman takes it with him on his travels to places unknown.

So which game do you guys think is better. For me is Majora's Mask.

Eehhh, this one's tough because both games have pros the other doesn't. OoT is truer to what a "traditional" Zelda game is, but MM is distinctive in that it treads upon ground that the franchise hadn't before. OoT has a larger world and a grander sense of adventure but MM placed a greater emphasis on more personal tribulations and it didn't have that awful Water Temple. OoT had the traditional Zelda villain in Ganondorf, whose backstory is finally revealed and is probably at his most intimidating (albeit not his most challenging) in this particular game while MM had something completely different in the Mask, who was a distinctively Lovecraftian and easily more intimidating then Ganon ever was (losing all those times takes away the menace I'm afraid) but also something of an enigma as it doesn't really have that much of a backstory or lore behind it to account for how much of a threat it is.
OoT was also one of the few games of old franchises that successfully made the 3D leap and set the standard for what future 3D Zelda's would be like, MM didn't completely change the game but it improved upon what OoT was working towards and the Masks mechanic greatly diversified your gameplay options (and were definately more fun then simply switching tunics and boots in giving you options) and because of that, I'm gonna blasheme and go with Majora's Mask. Good gameplay is always the cornerstone of a good game, and while both games had that, MM's was just better overall if I was just judging it independantly of OoT's place in the franchise history. If both had been released at the same time, I genuinely wonder how people's options would differ.

and lets not forget that gannondorf just wants power, and the majoras masks, FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON controls the moon to destroy the world so on the scale of evil
Gannondorf<Majora

Dang, you had to get me started on this...
*Sigh*

Well, ocarina of time was very fun, and had a really nice atmosphere, it was annoying constantly backtracking.
The boss fights weren't that hard to be honest.

Majora's mask was really fun, dark and time consuming.
The landscape wasn't that big, which was a good thing for people who didn't like traveling long distances to go get something.
The story Had some holes in it, but it was overall enjoying.
The boss fights were challenging, but there weren't that many of them.
And the whole mask thing was plain awesome.

I'm going with majora's mask.

Dang, I hate these type of questions. It's like picking between a waffle and a pancake....

Well, MM was pretty awesome, with a new gameplay I have never seen before (time traveling FTW). The bosses were harder and the side-quests were pretty fun. Not only that, but playing as Fierce Diety Link and beating Majora was pretty epic!

Majora < All LoZ Bosses

Ocarina of Time was however the one that started it all. The story was a bit more detailed, and the environment was much more bigger in scale. I also liked the ending better, simply because you had to run the hell out of the castle rather than beat the boss and a "The End" shows up.

....

I don't know! It's too hard. D:

But you know....the thing is its hard to compare them I mean...the only thing they have in common is the same franchise thingy, name, rpg style etc cause in everything else They both felt so different. Like josh said, Majoras Mask was sooo insanely dark >_<

I actually remember XD when I got majoras mask for Christmas I woke up...picked up the game I was all happy and smiling...and when I looked in the back of the games box, I see that face (The one you see when Link puts on the Zoras Mask).

When I saw that I put the game down, curled up in a corner and started crying XD

Oh god, oh god, oh god....

I'm going to have to go with OoT, only because it was my first EVER video game. I got an N64 and OoT for my 8th birthday, and because of that, I am who I am today. I'm a nerd, and I looove video games. All kinds. But anyway. OoT is a classic for me. I still play it today, and it's my favorite game evar.

MM is okay in its own right. I love it as well, and I still get cravings to play it today. It was definitely a face-lift for the series (in comparison to OoT.) I loved the environment, especially Ikana. It definitely has a twisted, more sinister atmosphere. Buuut, it's not the original.

Idrk where I'm going with this, because I'm running off of 4 hours sleep... I lovelovelove both. But OoT is better.

My personal choice would be Majora's Mask. It had more soul and it was darker than Ocarina of Time.
I enjoyed many stuff like dungeons, collecting masks and Anju's Quest. Majora's Mask may be better villain than Ganondorf.

It's been while since last try, but I'd like to play it once more. Specially when. . .

Hmm..there are both so cool....well story wise, Id say Ocarina of time is better by an inch but when it comes to the final boss...Kicking Majora's..uh..mask...tops it...especially if you collect all the other masks and use the deity mask! X32011-02-21 05:00:00
