Tree Travel Adventure

My 2nd go at a level. Added more details and decorations and polished it up a bit more. Unfortunately i hit the max on the thermometer. I made it longer and hopefully more fun at the same time. Appreciate any comments. Thanks

Gave it a play, and it was pretty sweet! I liked all of the detail to background you did, making effective use of the flat layers (and even 3D layers for the clouds). It was also pretty cool how between areas, you fell in slowmotion, that provides a cool transition. I also found the ending to be humorous, especially with Da Vinci as the teacher. One thing I would suggest is making the creatinator shoot out slightly larger bounce pads, and maybe putting a gyroscope on the pads to make them always face up (if you can do that). Also, while this isn't too important, you may want to glue down the powerup negators that wall in the bonus area, I accidently hit one and moved it to where the creatinator was cancelled out if I moved to the right. But I was able to reposition it eventually and continue. Overall, good job!2011-02-08 17:57:00

Thanks, tried both your guys levels. Unfortunately CuthbertAllgood couldn't get a versus going on. But i like the idea. Jdsfrog i tried ' The Ship Yard' which i thought was great. I thought i got stuck in the beginning cuz i got caught under the anchor. But i pushed my way to move it so I could get the caveman key. Appreciate the feedback. I did go back and fixed the creatinator and added double sided bounce pads and infinite check points. I got a few i think cuz of that. Any other suggestions would be great. Even though I havent got alot of plays Ill probably still work on another level soon. This game is just too fun! 2011-02-08 18:35:00

Looks:

The scenery is good, I can see you put a lot of effort into it. There is a nice theme throughout the level for the most part, but there are a few times that I wonder where the links are. For example - why is there a huge pit of fire in the middle of the forest? I understand that you needed a hazard which you could place a bounce pad on, but it's just a thought that ran through my head.

The schoolroom at the end is a lovely touch, and I must admit I had a little giggle at your choice of schoolteacher!

Playability

On the whole this level plays well, you've placed hazards at good points, and made the platforming interesting, moving up and down the level rather than staying on one plane. I personally preferred playing this level as a race, as it seemed more rewarding to me to be rushed through to get a highscore than to take too long over things. Saying that, having the option to go through and look for your bonus areas is a nice addition. However, a few issues:

You should probably place one more checkpoint near the start of the race. I feel into the fire at the treetops section and was more than slightly miffed that I had to go right back to the start point. At least if I hadn't had to see the mini cutscene again, I wouldn't have minded so much.

There is a section (with three layers, and spikes to hop over) which is very easily beaten by just hopping down from the highest to lowest levels. You may want to shift the spikes around a little to force players to actually make their way through your trap.

Jdsfrog made a great point:

Yay from me! perhaps try to solve a few of the playability issues, and you'll have a good solid level on your hands.

Appreciate the review rialrees. Theres a checkpoint by the first area by the spiders. Its right behind the grappling hook. I figured fire would be good because I had the spiders there. Maybe I shouldve spread them more around the area. I queued both levels and will play them tomorrow when I have time.2011-02-09 19:38:00

lol needs a little more checkpoints in the beginning of the level. Its usually after every set of dangerous objects there is a checkpoint.
Darkness Strikes Intro

(1-2 players) The beginning to Darkness Strikes. Reading is very imortant in this game, so if you dont read the dialogue then don't dislike it. if you do dislike it, comment about the problem and the problem will be sacked ...yea. Warning people who have a history with seizures may have a problem with the strobe lights.

Update: Just played your level. The scenery looks really good, and the gameplay was fun. I know other people have mentioned this, but I died during the spiders area and spawned at the intro again. This happened several times, which was kind of irritating. Other than that, I really enjoyed your level. One minor thing that you can decide to change or not. Right before the spiders, there's text that says there must have been a major storm. Then the camera pans, and the text disappears too fast. You could make the text a subtitle, so it doesn't get cut off.

REVIEW TIME!

A no nonsense platformer with a side of nonsense.

GAMEPLAY: 4/5 Solid platforming elements together with a cohesive theme.
PRESENTATION: 3.5/5 Fun and accessible design. Singular camera and light work however.
AUDIO: 3/5 Passable, if not slightly forgettable audio backing on this level.
VIDEO: 4/5 A lot of detail went into some of the areas and the level is entirely handmade. Above average visuals.
TECHNICAL APTITUDE: 2/5 No intricate wiring here, just clean platforming.
DIFFICULTY: 2/5 [/B} Accessible to casual gamers.
[B]REPLAY VALUE: Low.

OVERALL: 3.5/5 Detailed environments make this level stand out ever so slightly in a slew of side scrolling platforming levels.

Suggestions: Title Screen? Slight increase in difficulty?

+ Time trial.
- Activation sound for race would be nice.
+ Slomo!
+ Bubble combo during spikes.
- Unskippable cutscene at the end of the race. (the school sign)
In any race, cutscenes should always be skippable.
+ Twist at the end.

Tried the race mode, but it made the level felt much shorter.
Is the thermo full?

Looks like you fixed the creatinator bounce pad problem from that review.
The only problem I had was at the first bouncepad, it doesn't work so well in the back layer.

Thanks for the reviews.. I went back and fixed the cutscene at the end so it shows up after the finish line. Unfortunately the thermo is full I had to use an emitter to emit the sackbots at the end or else I couldnt save it due to it overheating. I wanted to make it longer but I ran into that problem.
