whats Digital art like?

Archive: 19 posts

I cant believe I actually got the guts to ask this...laugh if you want, yeah laugh at the poor guy who cant afford anything =/ But im really curious...

Ive been drawing my whole life only using either a pen or pencil and notebook paper (Officialy got my first drawing pad a week ago XD) So ive been like drawing in it. I actually wanted to post them here but well the camera quality is bad and if I post them here its just gonna make you puke...

but whats photoshop etc like?
is it like the same thing as drawing? some people told me its the same thing as drawing in Paint on your PC or like iscribble.com, but wow is it really like that? I mean i find it impossible to make a straight line with a mouse...or am I just bad at it? XD

I was just wondering if anyone could like tell me whats digital art really like? cause ..im lol im like a caveman when it comes to art, im still using pencil..so yeah anyone?

Id really like to get it one day but idk, either that or a PS eye thing so yeah.

There's no shame in drawing with a pencil.

Sometimes, I think hand-drawn art is way better than Digital Art. It has a more personal feel to it.

Photoshop and all those other things are nifty add-ons, but nothing beats the real deal.

You know, you can use GIMP. It's free and almost like Photoshop

You and me both, I couldn't draw with a mouse if my life depended on it. Hopefully I'll get myself a tablet one day.

I also completely agree with this.

Yeah I feel the same way sometimes...I actually appreciate art more when its hand drawn directly from ones hands, idk call me old school but I do agree.

Finger painting? wow...is it really like that? cause ive seen some stuff that is like really amazing, I always though they used some tool or something. Im asking cause I was made fun of because I dont make my art digital etc...cause alot of people in forums tell me its the best way to make art...but yeah I was just curious ^_____^

Yeah me neither lol XD I cant draw with a mouse even if i try

I don't think either is superior to another. It all depends on the artists skill and preference to what media they use. There are plenty of advantages and disadvantages of each. Of course, in the long run alot of digital art is simply imicking traditional art mediums and tools. Drawing pads for a computer, tools labelled paintbrush, pen, eraser etc.
I tend to make alot of mistakes and am always short on resources so I find a massive preference with digital art.

Here's a fantastic digital artist's self portrait:

I wouldn't put traditional or digital art as better or worse unless personally. If you're unsure about digital art, I suggest you give it a go.

Well, most people who are uber-skilled at digital art use a tool called a tablet. It's a..well...er...Here's a picture. (http://brain.pan.e-merchant.com/3/4/02554443/l_02554443.jpg)
See, you plug it into your computer and (with a drawing program like Photoshop or Paint or whatever) use the pen to draw onto it. Wherever your pen goes on the tablet, it mimics it on the screen. It's like using a mouse, only you've got a lot more control, and it's more like drawing. It can take some getting used to, though, and you've gotta have good hand-eye coordination, because you'll be looking at the screen while drawing, not looking at the tablet.
But the finger-painting thing applies more to touch screen computers, not tablets. Drawing with a tablet is like drawing on paper, except you're looking somewhere other than where your hand is moving. It's pretty hard to explain, hah.

In my opinion, traditional art will always be a liiiiiiittle bit more superior than digital, because...well, because it's got more soul to it. Or something. And it usually takes more skill to make something magnificent traditionally (at least, that's what I think), since you haven't got all the convenience of those fancy paint programs like Photoshop. ALTHOUGH I have to admit that I enjoy drawing digitally more than I enjoy drawing traditionally. But that's just my opinion, and mine alone. It's up to the artist and their skills/preferences/whatever when it comes to the whole traditional vs. digital debate.

Art is art, it doesn't matter whether it's traditional or digital.

Here's my favourite example of what can be achieved with digital art.

I have to disagree with this though.

Okay. These are only my opinions, anyone and everyone is entitled to agree or disagree with them.
I was just saying that there's something, I don't know what, just something about traditional art that you can't compare to digital. Every paint stroke or pencil line reflects the artist and their own hands. It's just a more home-made sort of feeling.

I wasn't saying that digital art can't convey/evoke emotions or feelings, because believe me, it can, so I just hope you didn't think that was what I was implying.

Bottom line is, all art reflects the artist, doesn't matter what or how it's made.

Lets not forget about the hybridisation of both, I know plenty of people that draw stuff on paper, scan it and do the colouring digitally.2011-02-08 00:42:00

Yup I know I wasnt saying you're wrong to think that but merely that I disagree. Yeah I get what you mean by all that. Youre entitled to think that 100%. Im not telling you to stop thinking it. "I have to disagree with that" is alot different than "WTF YOURE WRONG GTFO"
Sorry for the confusion >.<

Using a tablet can be incredibly awkward at first. I hated mine when I first got it. I felt it was 90 bucks down the drain. It found a comfortable spot shoved under my bed for about three years but recently I've picked it back up and made myself use it, and I've gotten pretty good with it. Like any other art medium, it takes plenty of practice. Although everything has its ups and downs, I think I enjoy the redo-ability in digital art more then anything. You can ask those who have watched my livestreams, I redo and erase ALOT. With most art mediums, if you mess up, it'll effect the final product one way or another.

On a side note, I'm using SAI currently. I used photoshop for a long time, but I've stumbled across SAI recently and I enjoy it a tad more. It's pen pressure and easy to use layout is wonderful. So far I've been drawing in SAI and editing the final product in photoshop.

Traditional art takes more skill and time but is usually way more acurate.

Digital art using a tablet is quick and easy but the ease of use makes almost all of the people who use them not take the time to put in fine detail or use shading scales properly, so they have these thick ugly lines sticking out of nowhere and not blending in with anything. (Wow that was a long sentence)

To do anything of real quality, digitally, you have to upscale the size of your creation, which can make it difficult with screen size limitations.

On paper theres no pixel size limit, so you can get more detail.
But on a PC you can undo.

It's give and take.
Digital is easier, Paper is more accurate but takes more time/skill.

Yep, this is what I do. I have folders and sketchpads full of linearts that I put in my (albeit kinda rubbish) scanner, pop it into a drawing program and go over the outline and then colour.

and I totally agree with Zim, digital or traditional, it's still art. Some people will favour digital due to the ease of repairing mistakes, and the extra possible effects, some will prefer traditional for the textured look pencils or paint gives, or the ability to work in very large sizes (my paint program struggles with how big (big dpi) my linearts are imported as now, let alone anything huge). I tend to yo-yo between both to be honest.
