Is your Grid Snappy?

Archive: 7 posts

I dunno if it is necessarily "snappy" but when I am trying to create something with the grids on, it will jump all of the place w/o me even touching the sticks. Any solutions?2008-11-16 19:27:00

Are you talking about when using tools like string and pistons?

If so you might need more space between the 2 objects so that the actual rope/piston/whatever base has room.

No, I am talking about when you have either Small, medium, or Large Grid on from the START menu.2008-11-17 01:16:00

Well, I don't know about it moving on its own, but when you create things on the grid, they stay lined up and move one grid space at a time (they won't necessarily be lined up, though, if all of part of your object was created while grid mode was off). When you are attaching tools like pistons, strings, and winches, etc... they will stay on the grid lines instead of spaces. Sometimes this can be helpful, sometimes not so much. If you find you can't line something up properly, turn grid mode off and do your best to wing it.2008-11-18 04:57:00

That happens to me but it is because the joystick on my controller is slightly bent.2008-11-18 05:09:00

Yes, having the grid on at all makes it "snappy". You can't turn on the grid just to use it as a guideline that isn't enforced by snap-to. It isn't like an image editor where grid and snap-to-grid are separate things. I find that what you have to do is line it up as close you can with the grid on, then don't change the size of it and move it with the grid off if you want to line something up, but in smaller increments than the small grid size.2008-11-18 22:21:00

Just like the rest of the editor, you really have to just play around with it for a long time and learn its quirks. Study your objects while zoomed in close to see how they line up on the grid. Try your best to make a level that looks nice and doesn't have a lot of unlined pieces, and you'll get the hang of it eventually.

Expect to invest some time with the editor before you can make anything that looks decent.
