A Short Story (v2.0)

Archive: 15 posts

Now with extra mind-*****!

Now I know I've made a thread for this level before, but it's 1 week dead and I've just finished uploading a pretty huge update.

About the level

What I tried to do with this level was to tell a story without making the player sit through any cut-scenes or text. For the most part it seems to have worked with the majority of people saying how much they enjoyed it, although there are a few for which it just doesn't work for (the vast minority) and I'm fine with that. The level has you chasing after a girl only to find that she disappears as you reach her.

It's pretty dark at times, actually scrap that it's extremely dark at times (since the update especially) but for the most part it's peaceful and carefree, made for enjoyment and all that.

A review for any of you who are interested: http://www.littlebignetwork.com/show...474#post181474

Special work has been put into the audio and the presentation. I hope you enjoy it (:

What's been updated?

. Addition of about 1 minute of extra play including alternate endings.
. Minor tweaks to cameras/ audio.
. Fixing places where people have been able to break the level.
. Making it harder for our suicidal little girlfriend to die
. Also reworking her microchip

When I get a more appropriate image I'll upload that, funnily enough this part of the level looks different since the update.

Thanks.

Very nice update, I had played it when she got stuck on a tiny ledge and gave up. I think it may be tough for some people to use the small platforms in the room befor the end because of the camera angle there, the far right one could be tricky. Otherwise very good, I like the black and white action, lots of people are afraid to try to minimalize everything.
Hopefully you could play one of my levels, Wailing Caverns or Aztec Maze and give me some feedback, thanks!

I know the bit where you mean, I think she actually stops there all the time and you have to go ahead to open the door for her, I'll make it more obvious 2011-02-08 07:44:00

Just read your review and I'm sorry to hear that you don't like it. Can I ask what "glitches" you refer to and also why you didn't manage to finish the level (too hard?)? (Horray for lbp.me glitches not showing scores till later_

In response to "I don't know why people like this level" I'd say that they do because it's different. Now, I can't really speak for other people because I'm the guy who made the thing, but in generalities I think I can manage it. This level does not focus on game play, though of course it's involved 7 but instead it focuses on atmosphere and the story.

Though you do say that you do not understand the story, which is a little... telling, but oh well (:

I was absolutely blown away by this level. I know I obsessed over it in the comments, but oh well. You'll just have to deal with some more praise.

Music: Very fitting of the atmosphere and the feel of the level. At the time, I didn't realize I had the (beginning) song in my tool bag, so whenever I heard it in a level, it instantly made me happy. It's all soothing, relaxing, and ambient. Wonderful choice of tracks. Though there is a lot of blank space visually, the music only helps to stimulate your imagination into picturing a beautiful scene.

Visuals: Black and white, obviously. Extremely minimalistic. But what can I say, I am a sucker for minimalism. Again, it leaves much for the imagination. And it just seems... aesthetically pleasing to me. There isn't much to distract you, so the player is free to focus on the beauty and intricacy of what's actually in front of you.

Gameplay: Somewhat frustrating at times, especially the part at the water wheels. However, I refuse to believe that everyone in LBP has a hard time jumping about like I do. Especially when I'm quite hasty, it's easy for me to fall off a little platform. So at points, it took me several times to scale the environment/continue forward. But the point seems to not be hasty. Players should take their time, and truly take in the environment.

Story: Ooooh, I want to know more~! Seriously, in this case, less is -definitely- more. Who is this girl? How does she know you? Why is she running? It is up to the player to fill in all the information. Excellent tactic, my friend. I like you.

Sidenote: Plzzzz continue creating. I think I love you.

@Sleepandmemory Haha, thanks (: means a lot.

I am still creating, it's just I have a bit of a habit of starting levels and then never finishing them, or deleting half-finished ones because I know that they'll never work: I have a noir-style stealth level, a sequel/ exploration along the same lines as this level which has you controlling a monkey in a forest and swinging through the tree tops, a custom music based one and a "suicide for lulz" one (I've done it before pretty badly on another account but it seemed pretty popular) all in some stage of unfinished-ness.

At the moment I've actually just found a concept I'm pretty happy to stick with for a while, but it's like, super secret and all that. Ah who am I kidding, basically it's a 1P sackbot level where a tap of the L1 button will slow down time for a bit.

Anyway, I'll go and add some movie cameras soon enough to make the bit you were stuck on less confusing. Thanks again (:

@Arastoph(enes?)

I told you I'd give you more feedback here and this is it

It was a good looking level with some inventive use of materials, not sure why an ogre would have arrows pointing out how to destroy his lungs inside him but how would I know, ey? There was a glitch where it played half of the cutscene where you meet the other guy twice, which was a tiny bit frustrating. Also, the boss took a tad too long to kill and it also took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out where to be flinging myself at, could you possibly light up the brains so people as dense as me don't swing around like an idiot for a bit?

That said, I did really enjoy the level. I just enjoy nitpicking.

I played this level at I thought it began great. The only problems I could think of was:

-When I was played with my friend on the same console, we came across a few problems. The first being at the beginning, we constantly fell through a hole in the bridge which we thought you could walk over fine, like the rest of the bridge, but we couldn't. I believe it was the second to last plank that caused this problem.

- Secondly, we were able to skip through the level due to a glitch under water which allowed us to pass several objects before continuing normally. I think this was at the water mixer part, with the expandable bridge switch.

- The gas that kills you under water were poorly placed. We could still swim under the surface which lead to more glitches and problems with cutting through the level.

- The constant confusing of not knowing what to do at a point we got stuck at became annoying. The biggest problem was when you see the woman who traps and then kills you. We had no idea that we had to both enter the cage, we were trying to hop over the gate thinking we had to meet up with the woman.

Having said all this, I do think the theme of the level was good and some of the ideas you placed and created within the level was quite good.

My most favoured idea of yours was the ropes with 3 and 2 grabable materials on them where you had to switch from side to side to reach the top floor.

Overall, needs improvement, but nothing a few tweaks can't fix.

Hope this helped, and please try my levels in the signature, thanks!

those are some very useful pieces of information! i can easily make the brains easier to see on the boss battle and i had to laugh at your comment about arrows in the ogre but i just wanted to make navigation easier for the user in the past (lbp1) i have had a lot of criticism that my levels can be easy to get lost in so i had to do something to combat this.
That cutscene is suprisingly quite complex in logic! i have tried several times to fix it i think im going to have to make a more complicated "one shot" switch for it and maybe one for each segment of the movie. Thanks for the feedback!!
You got my review on your level didnt you?

I'll try and fix those problems pretty soon, thanks. I've already fixed the bridge one for you btw

Problem I have now is that I'm currently making a level I think will be great and really, really don't want to drag myself away. That being said, I'll definitely have a crack at fixing the more major ones this weekend.

@ Arastoph

I did, thank you. However, I'll leave the story up to interpretation. Until I get round to a sequel/prequel thingy that is.

Nooooooooooooooooo~

http://nooooooooooooooo.com/

PS3 refuses to be fixed via. botching so it looks like I'll lose all the data for this level and the one I was working on, which was turning out to be very good in the end. Should be back to it + on this site in a few days when they send the PS3 back.
