N-Dubz Music video made in LBP2

Archive: 105 posts

Thought I'd post this so you guys can check it out.

I, along with a few other LBPC members got a chance to work on this video and MM has just released it. I'll let the other guys post their involvement if they want to. I had a blast working on it even though it was hard work!

Hope you guys like it.

I had to resort to using the import options - way too many levels to count. You should see my laptop with the level archive - now THAT is huge.

1 word to describe this:
Zomg-that-was-amazing!

Haven't seen the real vid yet, but that still looked awesome, this isn't "like the video" this is a new video of its own!

EDIT: Anyone has a link to the original vid?
All I find is people posting the song, with a pic all through the video... -_-

Also, a bunch of people have already taken and uploaded your vid in their channel. >_<

Very awesome. I'd love to read up how this was organised and what people did. How was work managed? Editing? Resource sharing? How much is LBP2 doing in engine and how much is being added from extrenal software? Please tell us more!2011-02-07 20:29:00

I looked for the official music video of this song but no luck. No matter cause this video rocks. Sweet sauce.

Its about 99% LBP2, 1% After Effects and 247% hard work

Special effects added in later are things like the fireworks and lens flares. Theres also a bit of green screen stuff (like the stage section where theres video in the background). We were allowed to use glitch layers which made life easier when packing it with detail.

We had a storyboard artist to describe every shot needed so we knew exactly where to pan and what the angles needed were etc. Didn't stop a ton of revisions though

Ok, so here's how it went with me.

I was assigned two sets to build. The Club corridor and the sequence with the silhouettes in the background originally. I did a test for the silhouettes but it didn't work so well so they didn't use that. We had a storyboard from an artist with each shot broken down for cameras and what the characters would be doing in each shot. Then we had a design brief for each set with inspirational photos and more description about mood, colors and any other direction from the director. We'd make a set in LBP2, then backup the file and put it on a file server for the rest of the team to download and review and modify if necessary. We had direction from a very nice lady over at MM and from the director and from the animators doing some of the post production on each video segment.

So each set was built, rebuilt, modified, tweaked, and polished up by many different people to get the final shots you see in the vid.

My stuff is.... let's see....

The light sequence on the drum background (I didn't do the set, just the timing on the lights)
The New York sets are a combination of MM, Wex and Me. Most of the tops of the buildings, signs and animation is mine though.
The Club where Talisa is singing is mine. (Nearly fried out the processor on that set - very complicated with all the bots and lights, and neon)
The Bar where Talisa is flirting is mine.
The corridor where Talisa is ignoring the guy is mine (two different sets one in regular layers, one in perspective - no glitch)
The back of the boat with the sackgirl walking is mine.
The white room I did a version of but they modified most of it. The LBP2 Logo was a gift from comph I used and they kept it in.

Ya, I think that's all I had in there.

As for the post production stuff, the dust in the NYC shots is added, lens flares and some blending of two shots into one is what I've seen so far that I know we couldn't do in game. Most of it is all in game stuff though. Pretty neat!

So while watching the N-Dubz LBP2 video today, I noticed some things that I didn't pick up in story mode. I could only guess DLC, but, who knows?

Please excuse the bad picture quality. If for some reason you don't believe the pictures, go and check out the video for yourself.

Anyway, I quickly threw together this rather rubbish compliation of screenshots from the video, along with letter-number combos on each picture for reference.

A1-A4: Maybe this is just the creators of the video being creative, but this jacket looks new.

B1-B2: This is where it gets interesting. That can't possibly be some stickers and decorations on an existing item. That's a real electric guitar hand item.

C1-C2: Those drumsticks look new. This could be some clever stickering/decorating, but they look pretty real to me.

D1: I don't think I've seen a torso piece with chains on it.

Drumsticks seem to be the anthenna deco, the chain shirt is from the Ghost Rider costume, from Marvel pack, I believe.

The other shirt from A1 - 4, seems to be one we already havem stickered.

Guitar appears to be a created object, static in the air, placind the sackboy to make it seem like he's holding it, but isn't.

The jacket looks like Ethan's jacket from the Heavy Rain pack, just stickered up a bit. The Jacket with the chains on it I'm pretty sure is the Ghost Rider jacket from the Marvel pack. The 'drum sticks' actually look like the copper pipe decoration. As for the guitar, you got me. 2011-02-08 07:03:00

also, where is that little guitar from? it doesn't really look like it's material and it moves around like a costume piece/decoration.....

It's not a recreation - it's the video. We only had the hand drawn story boards from the director to go on.

Wow! what a wonderful tool to introduce the charming creativity of LBP2 to an ever bigger audience (that of N-Dubz)... 99% LBP2 and one percent post production. That seems to be stretching the truth to the point it snaps back. :hrmf: Where's the level link? I'd like to play it.

The real trick would have been to build it as a single level so those who see the video can then go play the video... of course that's not what was wanted or needed.

Additionally, as an artist, creator, and maybe most importantly friend... I can honestly say while I am happy and proud of you all-- the LBP2 Blitzkreig has officially taken it's tool with me... much like Popeye, "I can stands no more!" I get that there are these unapproachable Gods on Olympus-- but my dang Spinach-Soufflinator just can't shoot high enough to knock ya on your keasters... *shrug* or to feed ya

It's a good souffle!

I disagree, up to a point... Each participant put together individual levels that was all LBP centric, but the resulting video is heavily post produced to pull different segments from these individual and separate levels and then composited together. So while the sets are all most undoubtedly 99% LBP, the resultant video is the result of heavy post production and editing work.

I know that a lot of after effects were added in a video editor, but it's still fantastic! Very well made, and it's easy to see how much time and effort went into making it.

Looking forward to more of the same.

The sets are insanely thermo heavy. For example, the club shots I did. That was about five levels I made separately that they took different camera angles on. The bar was an entire thermo filled by itself.

The NYC shots were about 7 different sets all from different angles and scales.

So putting all of that into a single playable level wasn't an option at the size and detail level we had.

Spinach Souffle you say? Sounds yum to me. Bring some up when your in the neighborhood. Your always welcome in Olympus as far as I'm concerned.

Well done, quite awesome, but why N-dubz? Anything else...

Btw: I have a question regarding the people who took part. Why is it always the same people who always get to do the official stuff? Of course they are brilliant at it... But there are quite a lot of people that would love and are well able to do plenty of stuff for media molecule.

It's the same people because that's how business works. If you want your bedroom decorated and the person you hire does a good job, you go back to them again the next time because you've already established a relationship, know they have the skills that you need, and know they can be depended on. It's just business sense.

Sony (this is more of a Sony project than Mm by the way) aren't interested in being 'fair' to all the creators when it comes to this stuff. As you said, it is official, so they are after the best results, and usually to a very tight deadline. They need as little hassle as possible, and going to already established contacts is the best way to achieve that.

There's a lot of people who post similar stuff (usually in roundabout snidey ways) and while of course getting to work on this kind of stuff is a great honour and a massive achievement, such feelings soon wear off and it becomes a job like any other, an awesome job obviously, but a job nonetheless. I feel it's about time a few people realised this and started to be happy for the ones who have manage to make such opportunities for themselves through their hard work and their talent.

Wow this might be or is the coolest thing I have ever seen made on lbp/lbp2. I know the video editing is not from lbp2 but still this is awesome. Everyone has their own opinions especially when it comes to music so there will always be some haters. I liked everything about the video and the editing is pro status.

She was only quoting me... those are really my words-- not hers... she just turned them back at me (playfully) is all... So she didn't say anything inflamatory-- in the least, and I am sorry for any confusion. This project has nothing to do with gameplay and it wouldn't matter if it did... Everything Jack said is true... it is always easier to travel a beaten path than forge a new one... the same can be said of relationships especially in a fledgling buisness like LBP2. Oh, I can imagine the long thankless hours of toiling in create mode only to get... paid?

I think the project came out very nice... My favourite set if I had to choose would be the limo... and I thought the acting was done very well enabling the sacks to meanfully convey the lyrics... The key component to making it all work. And that's all I have to say about that... Now back off to the mountain with the lot o' you... you too Jack, or no souffle.

Ya I didn't mean to imply anything by my reply to Gravel. I was teasing back... we do that.

Worship at the alter of Lockstich and Jack - I do. But ya, project wasn't about gameplay at all so not sure if it's a valid point or merely a way to say I suck at gameplay (which everyone knows anyway.... ) I haz a sad nao.... I'm going to go play with lights for awhile.

This was my first official gig so I have to say that it opened my eyes to how things change when it's something you have to get done and someone else's call on what your making. It's a very different experience than working on something you put your heart and soul into because your passionate about it or are driven to create it.

I don't know about the guitar. I didn't have anything to do with that sequence.

Thanks oodles for the info. Did you hit any killer bugs while working on this? I'm finding more time is now being spent fixing things that break in my first level than actually creating. It was only supposed to be a quick minigame and it's proven an epic job! I really want to do a movie, but I've been burnt by the bugs now and I'm worried any future big project is going to be a lot more headache than fun.2011-02-09 08:52:00

This is why it is always difficult taking something you Love and making it a job... It kills something in the joy of it all and is very, very, dangerous. Besides all the rest of you being Lunk-Heads, (this) is the best explanation why we go through Mods and Spotlighters so quickly.:hrmf:

Not got the wrong idea at all, Quinn

It's a good thing that you asked the question actually. You asked it straight out, no snidey comments or ulterior motive behind it, just genuine interest. Which in turn allowed for a straight answer.

Hopefully it'll help clear the subject up a bit and reduce the number of backhanded comments about stuff like this

nothing to do with the people chosen

No no, not at all Dajdaj

There's nothing wrong with expressing that you'd have loved to be a part of something like this! The comments I was referring to are much more sinister than that! To be fair, what I have said isn't really about this project alone, it's more a comment on the general stigma that goes with doing something 'official'. People are apprehensive about posting what they have been doing because they know how certain people will react.

Anyway, back on topic of this video. It really has come out awesome. It could have easily looked so so wrong, considering the subject matter, but it actually works really well

I would love to do something like that

Well I can honestly say that even though I'm way to nooby to even consider the possiblity, I'd have hated to do anything like that, pay or no pay! I have enough going on in real life!

You guys did a fantastic job! I despise N-Dubz with great passion but the video itself is sooo watchable because I knew someone had put so much time and effort into it. Loved everything but I especially loved the set design for the bar (wtg Morgana)

Major thumbs up!

I'm also curious to know more about the guitar. Is it a costume piece? Is it a decoration? Someone has to solve this mystery. I am wishing it's a costume piece that goes in the "Neck" category so it can be worn with any torso costume piece. But that's just wishful thinking, obviously. If it's just an after effect then i'd be disappointed.

EDIT: @ midnight_heist, come to think of it, the "hands" category makes a lot more sense. I forgot about that.

Still no repsonse to the guitar question?
The people want to know!
Hmm.
Now I'm starting to think it's new DLC, and the team are sworn to secrecy.
*watches sequence again* (around 0:14)
Yeah. On a second look, I would say either it's a costume piece, or it's the best after effects I have ever seen. Moves around with the character and zooms out perfectly.

Plus no way it is created in game, as objects can't move in that way.
It's definitely not decorations!
@D-E-S_87: My bet, it will be under the "hands" category.

haha... no secret behind this I promise. Nobody knows where this came from. It was added in after we went near it. Im guessing it was some sort of costume piece that was meant for dlc but never made it or its possibly there going to release it in the near futre?2011-02-12 21:41:00

I actually sent an email earlier today querying the guitar costume piece and what the chances are of it getting released for community use are, highlighting how popular it seems to be. I'll let you all know as soon as I hear anything back 2011-02-13 02:17:00

MM are probably just keeping quiet on purpose, in which case it's probably future DLC.

Thought I'd post this so you guys can check it out.

I, along with a few other LBPC members got a chance to work on this video and MM has just released it. I'll let the other guys post their involvement if they want to. I had a blast working on it even though it was hard work!

MM answered about the almighty secret guitar (http://getsatisfaction.com/littlebigplanet/topics/ndubz_video_secret_costume_decoration_or_glitch#re ply_4910591) :

Hello All.
Unfortunately the guitar featured in the NDubZ video was made exclusively for it. We may release this as future DLC.
Thanks,
Mm

Me is sad.

If MM sees enough requests for the guitar to be released, is there a chance they might release it? Seems like a waste of time to make it and not try and profit off of it.2011-03-06 18:06:00

This made me smile. hehe.

Great job on the video guys and gal!

I made a music video on LBP2 for a song my 17 yr old brother in law did. He's a rapper, and I couldn't publish it because of a few naughty words. I recorded it with my cam for youtube, but it cut the edges off and looks like crap. Looking for someone who can record it for me directly.. If anyone is able, I'd be willing to paypal you a few bucks. They put all of their music on youtube, but with just a photo as a placeholder, so it would be so awesome if I could get it recorded for them. =D

Yeah, that's my thinking also.
Perhaps there is additional mapping (for placing decorations/stickers) to do?
