A suggestion for a plugin for this forum, to "Prevent Doubleposting"

Archive: 21 posts

There's a plugin that I've seen on other forums that really helps with the Double posting problem.
While it doesn't abolish it, it reduces it by a lot. (And I hate seeing members getting scolded for double posting).

When added, what this plugin does is when someone double posts, the two posts merge. (On a 24 hour lifespan, but that can be changed. I think it should be something like 12 hours)
This is an Automerge Doublepost.

And also, I'm pretty sure it works with the version of vBulletin that LBPC has, since many comments said so.

Here it is
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=96602&page=68

And yeah, I put it at page 68 just to show you this post "I have a 3.7.3 version!"

What do you think?

Hmm, so it does work with 3.7.3? Well, we can absolutely try it and see how it works, but I'm not sure how well it will work. I'll get back to you.2008-11-16 19:08:00

Well apparently anyway. A couple of people said that it didn't work with them, while others said that it worked perfectly with 3.7.3.

Edit: I just checked in with another forum that has the same feature, and it's 3.7.3, so it should work.

By the way, when the two posts merge, the "Reason for Editing" box should be changed to "Automerged Doublepost"

I've seen that on other forums. It works very well.2008-11-16 23:32:00

I have also seen it on other forums. And the merge does give me a laugh every now and then when there's two different topics in one post 2008-11-17 00:04:00

We installed it and tested it, and it does not work on our forums. If one releases that is officially compatible with 3.7.3, we'll definitely add it in. Otherwise, we'll have to go with what we've got.2008-11-17 00:30:00

...Yeah! *And the mods rejoice.*

(On the idea. Too bad about the compatibility... But we can always hope for another version.)

The only problem this may have is that it could train some to actually double-post more, forgoing the edit button, which could lead to some issues in other forums, or something. But still, that's pretty minor, and it works for us. Let other forums deal with double-posting as they like, eh?

What? That's weird I guess...Did you remember to enable the product after adding it? >.>

** Please make sure you ENABLE this product after you install it - it is disabled by default. **

Blah, well I'll keep you guys updated if anything happens. Thanks for trying Cartman.

Hrm, it would make the opening post of the Captions thread epically long, no? xD
Might even make me push the letter limit someday, so... >_>

Meh...

Well, if we did have it, and WANTED to post a double-post much like when moderators do when they do contests and news and such, wouldn't that be an issue anyway?2008-11-18 01:14:00

Well, if you want to get into theory, then theoretically, if this mod worked on our forums, I could simply set up a usergroup that is exempt from the automerge and apply that as a secondary usergroup to any user who needed it. However, since it did not work, this isn't even a concern.

And yes, Forsaken, I enabled it after installation.

Oh, Okay. Just curious though.

I have a problem with the 'No Double Posting' Rule. I've already been warned for 'double posting' in one of my threads, and I don't want to get yet another warning. I have a thread open in the level showcase section, which I want to add some additional information regarding an update that I've just done to my level. BUT....I was the last poster in that thread, so I'm banned from 'Double Posting', but as my last post also quoted someone, (and the fact that I browse the web on my PS3) mean's that if I go to 'EDIT' the last post I have a total of 13 characters to type before the text box limit is reached. This rule is pointless, and simply hinders free speech. I request this RULE be dropped A.S.A.P.2008-11-19 00:31:00

Double posting is sort of like ... spamming but not on purpose , if you click the submit button when posting it might turn up as 2+ things its called double posting .

Do what I do with the Caption Thread, simply put in that second post.

There are naturally logical exemptions to the rule that nobody can argue against, and my case, as well as yours, are good examples.

The rule isn't "pointless", and it certainly doesn't "hinder" freedom of speech, very, very rarely can you not fit all of what you have to say in one post.
In fact, the only times where I've witnessed such an inability is in threads that require long opening posts, such as competitions and whatnot.

Dropping this rule is equally as pointless, if not more so (and it is more so), as keeping it around.

"Lol".

How on earth does it hinder free speech? Gawd.

Either get someone else to post just so you can post again, or actually just post again IF the character limit is reached.

I doubt it is though, seeing as it's something like 50,000 characters..

You should know that most(if not all) forums use this rule. And those who don't have problems.
Imagine the rule doesn't exist, and you see 5 consecutive posts from the same person, wouldn't that be just annoying? (Except in some cases like Scythe mentioned)
And it's way to ensure that people don't get "free" posts.

Double posting truly isn't that hard; And if you have something to say, ask someone to post after you like Miffy said.

In any case, can a staff member lock this please? I'll ask it to be unlocked once something happens, which shouldn't be that long from now.
