Attack of the Mutant Marshmallows-- Unintentional Homage?

Archive: 8 posts

Anyone who's played the side-level Attack of the Mutant Marshmallows in Victoria's levels may notice the similarity between that and a certain PSOne franchise...

BUSTER BROS!

Man, that was one of the first console games I played, and I LOVED it. For those who don't know, the basic gameplay involved you taking control of a character with a grappling gun that you used to pop (apparently radioactive) bouncingg bubbles that fell from the sky. When you hit a big one, it split into two smaller ones. If you touched a bubble, you died. And it was FUN AS HECK. Especially co-op.

I don't know if anyone at MM knew about Buster Buddies (I'm sure at least one of them did) when they made this level, but "AotMM" brought me back to the good ol' days.

I can still remember the announcer's enthusiastic voice from Buster Buddies. THANK YOU!

I hope I'm not the only one who remembers this game, otherwise I'll seem like a weirdo.

Darn. I guess I AM the only one who remembers that game. Too bad.

Nope, you're not alone, I'm pretty sure I played it on Super Nintendo. I wasn't good at it then, and I'm not good at AOTMM now either, lol, some things never change.

There's lots of old game references in LBP2, the Robotron side game, the Konami code, a sticker that looks suspiciously like an old Atari 2600 box, lots of stuff like that.

I vaguely remember it.
AotMM is amazingly fun though, and I'm sure they based it on Buster Bros.
Highest score by myself on it was 9,700 - ish. Was gutted I didn't make 10,000.
But I now have all my hippie gear

Whew. Good to know I'm not the only one. It was a fun series. The added challenge was the fact that you couldn't aim; you always shot upward, requiring you to actually stand UNDER the bubbles to shoot them! There were, of course, powerups to help you, which made it all the more fun.

...now I want to remake BB in LBP2...

I had the game when I was kid. But I didn't like it too much. I found it kinda boring after a while.2011-02-09 05:01:00

And here I thought you were gonna say it was a homage to the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes movie, but I guess that wouldn't really be unintentional at all.

Incidently, I think I can only obliquely recall a Buster Bros. game (never played it).

I was thinking "Ow, I don't know what that Buster Bros is, but this game reminds me more of Pang". And well, wikipedia told me they are one and only game.

I played this game like 6 months on a row on this PSone compilation (Super Pang Collection), so I immediately made the link between the level and this game !
And actually, I was so used to BB's mechanics that it took me like 10 plays to understand that the marshmallows actually collided against each other...
