Controlling Animated Sprites, aka, 8-bit characters

How would you create a moving Mario-like 8 bit style animated character? I kinda have a grasp on the animation itself with either a selector, sequencer, or emitters. Which would be best? Secondly, how do you control this. Would it be a controllinator with an advanced mover on the object? And how would you jump? Or is it simply following a hidden sackbot behind material

I know that is a lot and fairly complex. I got inspired playing the Donkey Kong level and would like to create something in that style

I think using a sequencer would be one of the easiest solutions, combined with emitters (which emit the animations).
How I would control this... I really don't know, tbh. :/ I guess it's some heavy 'Mover' trickery, but I can't figure out how exactly this should work.
