Robot Wars Versus (Work in Progress)

Archive: 4 posts

So I've been a little hesitant to post, not because I was worried about people stealing my idea but because I wasn't sure I would actually finish this project. I only ever made two mediocre levels in LBP and I was more than a little nervous about creating in LBP2. But I am so hugely excited about it as I'm very close to entering the stage I like to call 'beautification'. All the mechanics are done, everything works, my husband and I find it tons of fun to play. I just got to make the facades and whatnots that'll hide all my ugly bits!

For those not in the know, the 'Robot Wars' I am referring to was a TV programme in the UK (modelled on a show from the US) which started around '97.

From Wikipedia:

The series involved teams of amateur and professional roboteers who made their own robots to fight against each other in both friendly and tournament matches. As well as fighting each other, they had to avoid the "House Robots", which were not bound by the same weight or weapon limits as the contestants.

Many have tried. But many have fallen.

I've seen a few attempts at Robot Wars levels over the last year, mostly involving some remakes of some of the more famous robots from the series (such as Panic Attack). Whilst I'm not about the slate anyone on here, I feel that these levels were doomed from the start, for a few reasons. Firstly, the camer angle did not lend itself to this sort of level. Creating robots to fight side-on meant losing much of the manouverability (and fun) and resulted in two robots ramming each other non-stop. Also, pretty much every level I've seen has tried to remodel a robot from the series.

I considered this, but soon realised that the best robots were far beyond my capability to make in LBP2. Now I'm not saying anyone couldn't do it (Challenge accepted??) - but I was working top-down, to enable an interesting arena. Creating a robot with a flipping weapon or a top-down spike was just not going to work.

So my husband and I set to designing four unique robots, inspired by the series, but not a direct take. We've ended up with some creations I'm pretty darned proud of. And I have successfully (at least I hope) delved into logic gates and switches in more depth than I ever dreamed I could.

And thanks to the help of members of LBPC, I've managed to create a versus level with two game ending mechanics (5 minute countdown and Last Man Standing). I'm really truly excited about this! I've even managed to make a selection menu at the beginning, enabling a tutorial and robot rundown. (Yeah, I know most of you will just be thinking "wow, big whoop!" but this is a huge deal to me lol)

I'm not sure what the point of my post is, apart from sharing my excitement and announcing my upcoming level to the world. But anyway, here it is .

I saw you posted in Cryogens review thread.

I'll have a play as soon as I can get my brother online with me as I think he'd enjoy this level, and from what I've heard it sounds a pretty cool level.

I'll test out the current version of it, and be back with a review soon, I hope.

Anyway, would you try my level?

Details and level link in this thread:

EDIT: Played it, now for the review..

I gotta say, it's well done. The sound effects of pushing robots around(well, at least the NPC bot. XD) were satisfying, and each bot played differently, yet still worked.

I feel that maybe the timer should be a bit smaller, and the bot's special attacks be a bit more potent? As of now they work okay, but it seems they should have a bit more "oomph."

Great job, and keep it up!
