Going to install a new HDD for PS3... is there anyway to backup my saved data??

Archive: 15 posts

Ok, so my PS3 HDD is getting pretty full, so I'm thinking of replacing it with a 500GB one.

Problem is.....would changing the HDD mean I have to restart all my progress of LBP1 and LBP2 and collect all the items ALL over again??

Is there any....short cut to this? I'm really tired of collecting all over again.
I had to do it 2 times when my saved data got corrupted in LBP1, I had to di it again this month because I bought a diffretn region for my LBP2 disk... I've probably replayed the game 5 or more times now..... is there anyway I can back-up my save data and re-import it back to LBP2 once I finished installing my HDD?

You can back up your profile, Press start when in your pod and go to settings, scroll down a bit and you will see a section with profile. in that you will see a option to back up your profile.
If you have done this you can go to the ps3 menu, and go to saved data. If it is all good your lbp2 backup profile should be there. And you could easy copy it to an usb drive, or something like that.

Then you can swith hdd, put back the lbp2 profile from you usb drive to saved data, reinstall lbp2 and reimport your previously backupped lbp2 profile.

Also if you have any important created levels,(they should be saved in the backup) you really do not wanna lose, you could also upload them as locked to the lbp2 servers, they will stay there no matter what.

Would that work??

Because when I needed to format my PS3 so I backed up my profile and moved it to a USB stick, then I formated my PS3 and then went back into LBP1 to try and play my profile, and it said my profile had been saved on another account so I won't earn me any trophies.

I then tried to import that same profile into LBP2 and it said the same thing "This profile had been made on another PS3 profile" but it won't let me import any of it.

Do I have to copy the Game data or something? Or is there no other way??

Hmmz, Im digging in my memory now, because last year I also changed my HDD, and for that i backupped everything i could see from lbp1(including the lbp1 game data i suppose) on my usb drive, and put it all back when i switched the HDD, then when played lbp1 on this new hdd, all my stuff and progress was still there . only thing i had to redownload was the DLC.

You can also chose for a whole ps3 system backup:

or take a look at here

If you want your LBP profile to not be deemed "copied from another user", the only option is to do a full system backup onto an external drive, and restore it onto the new drive.

Also note this method won't correctly transfer the LBP* profile in Game Data, so make sure you make a backup into Save Data first.

* Well, didn't work for LBP1 - not sure about LBP2.

oK i got a question too.
someday i will need a new PS3. this one i had for over 2 years now.
i know how to make a back-up to my USB thing or whatever. but what i want to know is,
a way to do it that lets it think I'm the same user as before, so i don't get a message of,
"you copy this profile from another user" and i want to know a way to back-up my DLC.
some of my DLC took a long time to download, So I'd like not use up another 1 of my 5 limit Store downloads
if possible. someone told me how to do it before but i can't remember how.

sorry i can't put up with the idea my PS3 thinking I'm someone else. xD
the whole thing of it telling you can play but you can't get trophies message
every time you start the game is more then annoying. I'd sooner just put all my costumes
on sackbots then put them on a lock level and start a new profile. *mew

but like i said i don't want to have to re-download DLC. there has to be a way to keep it i believe.

Dunno. Have a look on amazon or somesuch. One important point is they must be formatted FAT32, not NTFS, and some versions of Windows (at least Vista) won't let you format a drive over a certain size (I forget the exact figure) as FAT32, so you'll need to use another tool - google for "fat32format".

Yep, try deleting all the gamed data utility stuff ('cept LBP's) it shold clear plenty GB's if the current used is too much.

Also, if you don't wanna use another of the 5 accoun DL slots, simply deactivate your acc from that system before you sell/ trade/ throw away/ whatever.

I replaced my hard drive recently, and it was pretty straight-forward. I used this drive, which is also an upgrade from 5400 to 7200 rpms:

You can back-up your entire PS3 from the XMB and then simple restore that content when you've switched drives.

Here's a walk-through to run you through the steps. Allow for a couple variations since the PS3 has changed slightly since this was written:

http://asia.cnet.com/digitalliving/tips/0,3800004921,62032875,00.htm

Keep in mind this will back-up EVERYTHING. So you will need a lot of space on an additional HD formated using Fat32. Windows will not let you format a partition to Fat32 over a certain size, so you will likely need to turn to Linux to format. You can install linux on a thumbdrive in order to do this.

Anyway, it may seems little involved, but I like this method over manually saving all the individual save data.

Well I don't have to worry about the Fat32 format since my 500GB is already Fat32

Just a word of question, would I be able to use the HDD i take out of the PS3 if I put it into another External Casing??

I was referring to the external USB drive you'd need to make the backup. The HDD you plug into the PS3 is automatically formatted by the PS3.

Yes, but the data the PS3 stores is all encrypted, so you won't be able to decipher it.
