The Haunted (Pics inside)

Archive: 19 posts

Hello Everyone, this is my very first LBP2 published level. It's based off the premise of Silent Hill 2. Your friend, Professor Braxton received a letter from his wife who's already dead for 5 years. It says on the letter that she is waiting for him on the place she grew up in which was a mansion.

Now, the 2 (or 5) of you embark on a journey to this mansion and see all the secrets that lie hidden.

Preferably for 1 player only but multi-player is fine too, just please stay together most of the time. This is mostly an intro level. Lots of reading but with some gameplay and a couple of simple puzzles. It's setting up the whole story. Here are the pics for anyone interested.

Edit: Here's the LBPme link: http://lbp.me/v/xhb2rs

I appreciate any helpful feedbacks. Thank you and have a nice day!

SPOILERS!
OK I started playing this so I will give feedback as I go along. Very good intro, nicely done effects of the paper and then the house. Subtitles are all crooked? Not sure if that is a subtitle thing. Got to the house, almost wanted a cnace to walk from teh car to the house, but just because it looked cool. The inside of the house was perfect, the jump out was great, but I missed the triangle for the first five or six doors? Had to retrace all the way back to the first one. You may need to change how it is displayed or hint better about it, I may have missed a blurb on entering doors though, I missed one line in the speech in the start of the house. It is a long intro, you may want an option for players to skip on replays. Got to teh first room, and the safe is hidden in a side room, and the passageway was hidden by the shadows. It was on the fromt layer, and the wall did not allow me to simply shift layers and keep walking because I did hit that wall several times, removed all the stickers, tried pasting all of mine...and suddenly I just moved down a level on the tenth time against that wall. The guy did not talk fast enough for hte safe instructions, so I missed that until I had figured it out. The conrtols for the safe seemed a little weird, no x and no left fingehe r, not an issue, but did not figure it out for a bit, oh lol @ "ana*log", I would just say right thumbstick or R thumbstick. Got the code... The next room to right has a far dark corner shadow thingy, it is not bad, just a bit cheap to hide walls off camera, which is why I almost gave up in bedroom. The stairs down good, the arrow back was good, but how about and arrow to right too? Also triangle after I read note above still appeared, you could set a if lot switch so after the first reading it does not return. I think switches can do it easiest, but I have used a three xor switch that activates an on/off which turns on the speech and is connected back to two of the xor and the prox to the third. The fuses were good, but perhaps adding a material changer with mag settings so when it grasps it grasps, just on the inside of the claw, or giving the fuses a lip on top so they are not so slippery. I could see the stickers not covering the entire tops, and the mag keys always bug me, but that may just be me...all I think is oh crud I forget ot set yet another key to invisible, time to edit save and republish...
The speech bubble for fixing still appears after I fixed it. Nice kitchen and freezer, you camera is a bit jumpy and that may solve the room and wall edges being hidden, I missed whatever happened in the freezer, because the camera was moving. I got squished in the freezer second shelf towards the right jumping and grabbing, but that may have just been me messing around. Went back to teh kitchen and after going through a few times it went tot eh cool cut scene and ended? I am not sure if I missed anything or not. I still had the rest of the upstairs to check out I think. Did I die, or was that the end of the level?
Hope that helps, I had fixing cameras so much, they seem to not go where you like when you make them smooth, but fixed ones get all jumpy, it fit the level, but made it seem more room-next room rather than free flowing.
I coudl use feedback on my OK Space Accident (LBP2), I had one I was working on in LBP 1, but just ignore that one.

Being a fan of horror games, especially when made well in LBP, i'll be playing this one later.
I just published a horror game myself. (the post is currently sitting under yours, actually ). Check it out, it's called "they came from my nightmares".

This looks like my cup of tea, I'll queue it and play within the next hour or so. I'll probably leave some kind of hash-tag review on the level

If you could have a go at the level in my sig that would be awesome. (:

Edit: I'm back! I left a few words on the level but I'll expand them here. The level it self was very good, nice and original and visually pleasing. Some of the cutscenes dragged on a bit though and it just destroyed the pacing for me.

Also, I just got a black screen when I opened the safe (left it for a minute, came back and it was still a black screen), probably not going to happen for everyone but it's worth looking into.

It was very good apart from that though

P.S. I did really like this level.
P.P.S. what is with all these people leaving requests to play levels before giving feedback? LBPC has become so lazy now...it seems more P4P than F4F anymore.
P.P.P.S. Did I get to the end of this level? Or did I get a "failed" ending?

Before I start - anything, I just have to say great job on the visuals and cut-scenes. The details were great and the cinematic feel was high-caliber.

Pro:
The entire intro (including the start screen with the house silhouette. It may be a wee-bit long for some tastes, but not mine.

Again the details were well tended to. Something as simple as adding tassels to the curtains and the various paintings hung throughout the mansion really bring the environment to life.

The orange "see this" items that appear to guide the player are nice (and often needed)

Cons:
My biggest complaint would be the lighting. I understand it is a dark mansion with no power ... but it is really hard to see in some places. Even brightening or extended the lightning sequences might help some.

The safe controls were going to make this list, but after I figured out the safe nuances - I found the spot explaining how it works. Not sure why I didn't catch the note prior to figuring out the safe on my own. So - since you have the instructions already - can't really fault you with a con - so consider this more an FYI that the instructions can be overlooked.

Again, with the lighting - I often felt like I was bumbling around in the dark hoping that happenstance would get me where I needed to be. It was easy to get lost because some details were obscured in darkness and everything started to look the same. It was disorienting - and made me want to punch my TV.

The crane game was cool, but I had an issue with the grab-ability of the fuses. Maybe it is a designed-in challenge, but it was frustrating for the fuses to keep slipping out because the crane had issues going vertical while applying enough pressure to keep the fuses secured.

Oh yeah - I think you left an emitter showing above the first picture at the mansion entrance - it kind of stuck out since every other detail was so carefully tended.

Notes:
I know there are more cons listed than pros, but this is not a reflection of the level. the pros far outweigh the cons. I have not yet completed this mansion, but I will be back to finish. I got lost after the fuses because even though it cut-scene to doors with lights over them - the doors looked the same as every other doorway, so I couldn't tell where to go ... I wandered for about fifteen minutes and couldn't find what was "new" after the fuses. May have walked right by it multiple times. I went back to see if I could force the camera to pan there again, but unfortunately when I jumped back in the crane I was completely stuck and the button to jump out of the controllinator no longer functioned on second use of crane - have no idea why. SO being completely stuck I had no choice but quit out I could have tried to pop the sackboy, but I didn't think of it until just now.

After my half-hour adventure, I need a small break before I go back to try and finish.

If you could, please give a look to my F4F level. The details are in my sig. Thanks!

Thanks a lot everyone! Sry for the late reply. After weeks of working on the level, all I wanted to do was get it over with and publish it so i could finally take a break from it. And I did . I'll start working on improving it based on your feedbacks. Thanks!

I wanted for the long reading parts to be skippable but since this was my very first lvl in LBP2, I was still learning when i did those stuff. I used some logic that I don't even remember how they worked or how I did them so I couldn't touch them again after wanting those parts to be skippable.

For the lighting, it was really hard to configure since everyone's TV has some varying levels of brightness, what might be perfect for someone might be too bright or too dark for someone else. But since the majority said it's too dark, I'll lighten it up a bit and put more lights in on appropriate places. I actually wanted it so you can barely see but enough to see where you are going. My original plan was to actually have lightning as just the light source but it was always dark with a millisecond of lighting only when i tried that.

For the subtitles, I made sure that each segment was on screen long enough for the majority to be able to read everything before it goes on to the next line.

Also, there are no good or bad ending on this level since it's an intro level mostly. You should have seen a "To Be Continued" message at the very end?

For the safe, you have to keep holding R1 to be able to see the key pads and click on them. I'll find another way for players to notice the control manuals. I wanted to use notes but they detract from the overall atmosphere I was trying to make.

Also, I wanted players to somehow get lost in the mansion to simulate how big it is. But I'll see if I can use a camera on pan to show the player where the opened door is.

As for the crane not being able to pick up the fuses sometimes or a bit often, I did everything I could to have them get picked up most of the time but that was the best I could do it. Rubbers look ugly when they're scaled down small so I didn't use it. I put the material logic thing on both the cranes and the fuse with 100% friction to make it slip less.

Oh yeah, I have to put in more checkpoints. I completely forgot about them when I was making the lvl hehe.

Oh and for the collaboration request, sorry man, I won't work well in groups. I mean it's me. I play very randomly. There are times when I won't be able to play for a week or 2 and there are times when I'll be able to play all week. So it's not a good idea for me to work with someone on a project since it won't be fair for them.

Thanks alot everyone, I'll give feedbacks to those who gave me feedbacks ASAP! Thank you!

If you set the logic for the intro in a chip and then just made a prior option to skip or play, or possibly have the contoler not locked and have an R1 option to click and destroy the logic? But the main reason I am posting is to ask did you try and have thecrane innner claps with sticky instead of friction? just have a toggle on/off for the pinchers, and then have it also activate the sticky...just make sure it is only the inside of the crane otherwise it will get stuck on every thing.2011-02-08 08:27:00

Oh thanks for the suggestions. I didn't think of it that way. I will definitely try your suggestions especially the sticky part on the cranes. I think I got an idea on how to do it now thanks to you. Especially the intro. It's just that I made the mistake of attaching most stuff to a single output when I was first starting the level and I wasn't sure which output goes to which so just deleting one output makes the whole level confusing to me. Now, on the next one, I know how to make it so I can always tweak stuff.

Just played it, really, really enjoyed it. I agree with most of what was said here, but I'm really impressed with how much attention you pay to the little details...not many creators do that.

Have to agree about the lighting too...it's too dark in some areas. You could definitely add some more lights here and there...maybe inside the stairwells to cue players where to go. One big tip that I've discovered for lighting is that using the Bee Antennae object is really helpful because you can make it indivisible in play mode, so it's great for adding spots of fill or bounce light without actually seeing the light source.

Oh, and it might be nice to be able to skip the intro. I got called away while playing it the first time and had to go through it all again.

Well done my sir. You have created a great atmosphere and whats most important for me, something that can make or break story driven levels like these, the writing.

Good:
- intriguing story
- atmosphere
- nice companion
- creepiness
- awesome start menu
- really cinematic

Bad:
- most of the scares are "monster in the closet" kind of ones... but they still surprised me

Suggestions:
- add some kind of map cause the navigation can get pretty confusing. Don't make it so that it's always active. Make it so that it's active when you press a button
- get rid of the slow mini-games like the electric one. They're not really fun when they're slow like this and they don't really add to anything
- maybe I just wasn't searching enough around but add some kind of secrets that you can find or collect. If you decide to listen to this suggestion make them story incorporated and don't give scores for them until the end of the level so you don't break the atmosphere and immersion
- for future replays, make it so that you can skip the intro

I liked and hearted the level.
Well that's all from me. Hope my feedback was of use. Lots of love, blizzard! <3
