Circus Minimus Maximus

A single player level I created for a contest on the Penny Arcade forums. I am looking for some more feedback. I hope to learn a lot before I start on my next project. Thanks.

Anything specific, I have play tested this level to the point that I don't know what parts are frustrating anymore. Please be merciless and tell what parts sucked the most.

A pretty hectic level. It is a pretty fun level, but also ridiculously frustrating. You've got to find a better way to double jump than this. Often the pad will spawn and the bot will miss it entirely.

The pass thru thing is cool, but maybe make it brighter.

All the sackbots were a great touch. It really livens the place up.

I couldn't finish the level due to the fact I just couldn't get things to work and the pad was missed several times. I think you're onto something here but it needs some precision and adjustments.

Thanks that is very helpful. I have no problem with the double jump. I must be too familiar with how it works. I do remember when I first started the level I would miss it. I guess I didn't actually fix that lqtms. I believe you miss it when you press circle while still heading upwards before you start to arc downward. Maybe I can add something to stop upward momentum when you press circle. It also doesn't appear if the emitted location is blocked by something.2011-02-06 22:20:00

Hey,

I played your level by now.
I have to say that i didn't find it too hard, maybe thats because i've played much harder games than LBP.
I liked the gameplay except the teleport technic. It seemed a bit random to me, would be good if could explain it at the start of the level.
Also it would be nice if you decorate the level a bit more to make it more lively.
Overall i like the idea and the concept. I've rated it and hearted it. I'm lookin forward to your changes and will play it again when they are done.

Edit:

Okay, finally got to playing your level.

I'll put this out there, I could not finish your level. Maybe it was due to my incompetence, or maybe a lack of explanation. I had reached the electric funhouse before getting completely stumped. I tried using your phaser to hit the button, ended in me getting electrocuted. Tried to phase through the walls, top section blocked me, bottom just took too long and I'd exit out and fall to my death. A clearer and more concise method is needed, but that's just me. As a triangle button for a hint didn't help me much. :c

+ Love the circus feel. Hectic, and frantic. Yet controlled and kept in. If that makes any sense.

+ Absolutely love the phasing and jump pad method. Though the jumping could use work as I found myself plummeting as the Sackbot would miss it.

- On that note, the phasing seemed to bug out on me as I would phase, freeze, then it would seem as if my bot would have a bot that phased as well. Something akin to a dream within a dream within a dream. . . Er, in other words it seemed a bit buggy from what I could tell.

-A few more decorations wouldn't hurt as you have many blank open spaces. It might be a personal issue to me, but I love having little details that just add up together to make for a pretty picture.

- Camera angles can be a bit wonky. Especially the part where I had to swing from the beginning, I had hoped it would have stayed zoomed out, but instead it zoomed in, making me have to pay close attention to the timing of me swinging to catch the next grabby thing.

Thanks for the feedback. I implemented a fix. I added a gravity tweaker to dampen out the users momentum for .1 second when the the bounce pad is emitted.

I did find a better way to double jump in general. The player DarkRavine has a good double jump. http://lbp.me/v/w4zfk6 It doesn't work well in this level though. You can't use his double jump after letting go of a grab swing.

Yeah like the other posters said, the double jump is a bit hard at times, I found I could use the two together to keep the second jump going, but the jump at the flag it was very difficult to see where to go, and then I just randomly died at the next plaform after the flams. I would just go sguish, but there was no reason for it. Also the lady that grabs the swinging ball killed me a few times as she jumped for it when I was there. Perhaps a tutorial or something first.2011-02-08 07:34:00

Well I died ... a lot; however I don't really mind. I didn't find it frustrating though, as much as amusing. The crazy camera angles really helped to give a sense of flying around there, and was probably my favorite part of the level.

I had no problem with the double jump (I mean I died a lot getting used to it, but once I was - it was pretty easy to control).

Where I ran into problems was on the phase shift area. When I was jumping off the button at the very beginning of that area, I kept dying for no reason. On attempt number three, the sackbot did not get destroyed and I died - which created a situation. Since the sackbot was not destroyed as well there was nothing I could do. The controllinator was broken. With a phase shift I could not survive through the next area (although I did give my life a handful more times in unique ways attempting to make it through). I am going to be giving it another go soon.

Please check out my F4F level. Details are in my sig. Thanks!

Are you talking about the button in the room with the elephant? Or are you talking about a bounce pad? I believe there is a bug where if your moving too fast off a bounce pad or off the swinging sign you will die. This happens because the controlinator looses the sackbot. I plan on increasing the speed that the controlinator follows the sackbot.

You did some good improvements thus far, I was able to beat it, but from the scores it shows most people die several times and just get the points back at the end. You don't want grabbable material by areas you need to grab like switches and several of your buttons activated things, but I could not tell what, and there was a blind jumps before the electric house.

I fixed the issue with the switches. I added tiny 2 second cut-scenes that show the electricity going off on the two buttons where the object being made safe wasn't in view. I prettied up the fun house area. I changed the theme of that area to chrome and foil. It makes more sense with the electricity. Also I associate fun houses with mirrors. I also added more bubbles so the bubbles at the end have less weight. Thank you for your feedback.

I managed to beat your level, even if it was very frustrating using sackbot's teleport. Double jump / summon Bounce Pad worked fine.
Obstacles were well done, I didn't fall too much on those.
The setting and characters are pretty good, but couple chosen material and objects in the level were little too much extra in my option.

I give it a yay.
