Controllinator questions

Archive: 6 posts

a couple of things -

1: is it possible to get a controllinator object to "Grab" another object such as a switch?

2: how can you augment a controllinators assigned controlls on the fly?
example - you pickup a powerup and it adds a new ability (new button assignment)
example - you pickup a powerup which makes the controllinator faster (requiring you to change the movers settings)
example - you pickup a powerup which adds an emitter to the controllinator enabling it to shoot projectiles.

i know this latter one is possible as it is done in the main game in that minigame that resembles geometry wars. loads of powerups there which change the controllinator radically...

any help would be appreciated.

1. Not exactly sure if I can figure out how to do that. You could make your contollinator object and the switch sticky for a very short time using timers so that they move as one. Would take some tweaking for sure. Easier to do tag sensors you'd trip off using proximity or impact sensors and assigned tags.

2. You can add powerups on the fly using assigned tags too. Your controllinator object would need to have all the potential powerups on it and then it would be a matter of turning them on once the player gets the powerup. You could use a perm switch that is activated once the player comes within range of the powerup or impacts some invisible holo with the correct tag on it. You could use the tag system to activate individual microchips with the emitters on them too. Then use an and gate with the button you want the player to use to use the power up and the perm switch that is activated by collecting the power up.

Hopefully that makes sense. I'm sure someone can explain it better than I have.

Good Luck!

1. If you built a contraption that allows to grab or if you have tweaked an object to 'sticky', then you should be able to do it. If you're needing a time limit in those grabbing abilities, attach a timer to it also.

2. First of all, make sure you're happy with all of the power-ups before you start building. Could turn into a big mess if you already built one and decided to add another. Secondly, just attach logic pieces, some rotators and movers, (A little extra is recommended since the controllinator layout will be tampered with) and maybe tags and tag sensors. Once you pick up the power-up, the logic on it (Or just simply the tag) should change the controllinator layout and give you some, if not, great results.

Thanks guys - thats given me something to work with...

so just to clarify -

using the example - a powerup which effects the speed of the mover.. you have the left analogue stick of the controllinator connected to the input of TWO different movers, one which is faster than the other? where exactly would the logic come into play here?

im sure when you tell me, ill be like "Oooh of course!!" lol

thanks in advance...

Well, you certainly need some kind of gate (AND, NOT, OR, XOR) to control those movers right?2011-02-06 19:22:00

well not at the moment no, it just goes directly into the mover... so -

the right stick connects to a tag sensor - when [OFF] this goes into the standard mover - once activated this sensor feeds into a different mover... right?

once i get home ill check all this. lol

thanks for the help guys...
