8-BIT: Side/Top Down Platfomer

Archive: 25 posts

Fliping from side to top down platforming this is somthing Iv wanted to do but in LBP1 could never. The art style is 8-bit and is what I did my deviantart submission for the contest (http://jump-button.deviantart.com/#/d38bxmz)

A mix of alot of thing I did in the beta, Iv not tested with more then one player so, I try making it four player but couldnt/didnt work out.

Played, could you try the movie in my sig!
Here's my review:
Visuals: Absolutely stunning, no wonder your an artist.
Gameplay: So unique , i have never played anything like it, its a bit like Shift but nothing like it at the same time. Loved this alot.
Monsters: They were alright, although not as good as their surroundings.]
Difficulty: I know this was designed for 1 player, but I played it with 2 people so it was VERY hard. When one person was "top down" The other person couldn't be, and if they tried to enter the "top down" mode the other would die. So it was difficult for me, but on 1 player it would be pretty easy.
Overall: It is a fantastic game, I would love to see more. However next time you could work on the challenge factor, add some puzzles and make it kinda like "The unfair platformer" Then it would be perfecto

Positive

*Aesthetically pleasing, quite a unique style and a good use of limited materials

*As a concept it's a really interesting idea, you go from side-scroller to top-down at the press of a button, it really makes gameplay feel unique.

*Everything is in it's place, and obviously well thought out.

Criticism

*There are varied obstacles, but not enough of them.

* I love the concept, but I'd love it more if the level was longer!

A really cool idea you had going with this level, I've never seen anything like this in or outside of LBP. Though, '8-bit' doesn't mean 'everything's blocky', I would call this style more along the lines of 'retro-reminiscent', but I get that that's not as much of an attention-getter as 8-bit is for the title. There were also a few times where I died simultaneously with an enemy when I jumped on them, so perhaps make their bubbles a bit bigger.

Nice concept, I wish you would have explored the full potential of the mechanic before release.
But I'm sure there will be a sequel..
A few bugs/annoyances, but nothing that hasn't already been brought up in the reviews/comments.

Oooo I've already played this, it's a very good level that deserves all the love it gets. I did mention this in the review I left on the level but it could be just a tiny bit longer

I'm still looking for feedback on my level (in the sig) but since this isn't F4F you're not required to have a go, would just be nice.

Well everything that needed to be said and suggested has been said already.
I really liked this level, the concept was very neat. I left a review saying the same thing
Oh and on that note, when I wrote the review I checked out the others. Some were really good but you got a lot of haters. I can't describe how hard they made me laugh.

I waiting happily for you Sky town 3 level and am also looking forward of you improving on this formula ( I know you'll probably do a much bigger and better sequel). Lots of love, blizzard! <3

I had the pleasure of playing this earlier today and really enjoyed it. The visuals were vibrant, retro and pleasing to the eye. The gameplay seemed very Super Mario Galaxy inspired and I had a lot of fun with it, hats off for doing something different from everything else out there. This level is a great example of how simplicity - when perfectly executed - can turn into fantastic experience. Great work, level has been hearted

Oh, and I loved the smile animation on the enemies when I got close to them!

That is an really enjoyable level.

VISUALS:
The look of this level is ingenious. Excellent material choices and layer glitch.

SOUND:
Good ol 8-bit sound effects and walking sound too when you walk on a wall. "New Family" music is a perfect choice for this level.

GAMEPLAY:
Great platforming. Even the walking on wall is very clever. There's one bug I sometimes encountered though. When you leave the controlinator and automatically entered for some reason, I instantly died.

OVERALL:
An very artist level. A yeah vote, a heart, and positive review.

Sorry to be a killjoy here but I don't really see the ingenious aesthetic that a few of you are seeing. I think the level looks nice, particularly the background, but other than that the materials were almost a given (the only two blocky tile textures), and the cubism art just takes several places and cuts of the square tool through and through. Just throwin' that out there (`- ` )/

Well i cant say for others but I can tell you what i was going for?

well the sky I picked colours that clash, that colours that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel. and its a works as a twist/fliping on what you see most of the time to go with the twisting/fliping gameplay you dont see blue clouds on orange skys.

I use two blocky materials but I use stone materials to show the player what was ground and couldnt be walked on and green to show what the player should/could walk on.

The death bug is gone? That is the only problem that I had with this level before, so I'll be sure to replay it again. Seemed pretty good except for the bug last time around. I'll pay more attention to things this time though. 2011-02-15 22:15:00

Pros:
Great Concept
Great Mechanics
Great Visuals

Cons:
No Top-Down Enemies
No Real Challenge

Nitpick:
Too long wait to die when off edge in Top-Down mode

Note to Other Players:
You will die if too far from normal ground when trying to switch from Top-Down to Side-Scroller

I thought this level was fantastic, jump. Like the Sky Town series, you developed a neat gameplay mechanic and then made a great level around it. I'm interested to see where you go from here. . . I can imagine some cool environmental puzzles and other evil challenges that would really exploit the potential of the extra dimension.2011-02-20 14:01:00

My Super Space Marble level has some sideways as well as top down elements, I will be trying this level.

Try mine if you want! Its pretty tricky.

Really awesome idea combing the 2d with the top town d. Just wish there was a way to make it more difficult and for the spawning to be a bit smoother. Still a very nice looking level with a great idea going for it.2011-05-26 01:12:00
