Background Animations and Scrolling Q&A

Archive: 6 posts

I am wondering how to make the background scroll past you like in Runaway Train level on story mode where the country was rolling past you as you worked you way through the train.

My second question is how do you make a scene like the one in Where in the World is Avalon Centrifuge? there was a whole battle raging in the background, complete with mech fight.

Third, can you still place objects in the far background and how do you do it?

If anyone could spread some light on this that would be great. My theories are the scrolling background is on some kind of random emitter that spits out thin background pieces onto a glass sheet obscured from view so that they slide past and then vanish. Or that the whole background is on a large picture attached to a wheel that spins under a suspended track/road that you use as the playfield. The fight scene is prolly a cut scene that the player retains control during but I dunno how the camera would stay on you, and I think it is done in the far background.

1. In runaway train, the train is actually held in place, and there is an emitter emitting pieces of scenery, which are emitted onto wheels below the level. At least, thats a simple way to make this effect. Not sure if a more advanced method was used.

2. Believe it or not, it is all done in the very back thin layer. Whatever materials that make up the objects have a black sticker on them.

3. Yes, you can use some 3D layer tools which are found in MANY levels to create 3D. If you want to make only certain objects in the background, look up a guide, as its pretty advanced, and I dont feel like explaining.

I don't even thing they used wheels in the background of the train just simple Movers stuck on the trees and the hills haha its become so easy to do stuff like this now, its great the stuff on Where Is Avalon Centrifuge is probably just hologram stickered black in the shape of all the vehicles flying past. 2011-02-05 15:28:00

sticekring hologram black makes it invisible (or did in the beta)

as for everything being bilt in the back layer, im sure your wondering how they made the mecha arms move only using one layer? well holo can actually be bolted to something that it is on the same layer as, meaning that you dont need to use lots of layers to make a moving arm for example

A bonus in LBP2 is that you can actually put gadgets and chips on background objects in LBP2. I made a really nice setting sun the other day with an orange holograph circle that had a mover triggered from a switch in one of the main layers. I haven't experimented a lot more, but it'd be cool to see what others come up with.
