Sidescrolling Shoot 'em Up - Level Size and other Things

Archive: 5 posts

Okay, first real post, directly a Thread and that in the help forum, I know, not the best way to begin a forum membership, but I am so curious about this and really want to work a bit further on my project.

I am trying to make a side scrolling top-down shoot 'em up, a bit like 1942 if anyone knows that, but I have a problem with the level size. I reach the level end too quickly and have no idea how I could make the level so it takes around 2 minutes at least to finish. Would also love to know how to make that moving camera, like in one of the later story levels, so that you always move forward a bit.

Hope someone can help, I am trying my best with this level, because my other stuff didn't really satisfy me and I have tons of neat ideas in my head.

What people usually do is, instead of having your plane/ship/whatever moving, they have the level move instead. Then you can emit a chunk of level and have it move past the player, and emit the next chunk and so on, and you can repeat it indefinitely.2011-02-04 23:13:00

I thought about that too already, but couldn't figure out how to do it.
I want to make a flat backdrop (with a thin layer), and add some stuff on it, so it looks like you are flying over a scenery, would this still be possible then?

This is exactly how MM made the level where your in the catepiller. They keep emitting small pieces of the "track" in front if the player. They had the emitters on a sequencer. Theres a YouTube of it out there.
