Hamstertron 2000 and destroyable walls

Archive: 14 posts

Hey folks. Is there anyone here who knows exactly how you go about creating those walls that the Hamstertron busts through in both the story level and the side level it features in? I've been trying to poke around in its logic, but I can make neither head nor tail of the smash attack. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being both obvious and easy, but there you have it. 2011-02-04 20:55:00

Isn't that being done by a Impact Sensor?2011-02-04 21:11:00

I don't think it is - the walls only break when you boost at them, if you simply run into them, they stay in place. I found two microchips on the Hamstertron with notes reading "Smash logic" or something to that effect, but neither seemed to have any obvious mechanism on it.2011-02-04 21:27:00

Mmmh that is true... Maybe the boost button enables the impact sensor, aldo im not sure if that is possible..2011-02-04 21:30:00

Something like that could be done using a tag (tag on hamstertron activates when boosting, tag sensor on wall picks it up and activates impact sensor, which activates destroy), but if so, I haven't figured out what the tag colour is. 2011-02-04 21:33:00

Yes, you can link together switches in LittleBigPlanet™2 . I'll draw a diagram with my known knowledge on how to do this, hold on here...

EDIT: Okay, this might make it easier or harder, but you can probably use tag sensors and impact sensors, just not both. (You can probably can do that too, though.)

Diagram only shows logic or "scripts" of this situation, not everything else, i.e. the directional boost using the R stick.

Well, yeah, it'd just be a question of anding the sensors/switches you want active at the same time to do your effect. I'm trying to find the specific mechanism used by then Mm Hamstertron itself, though - I'm trying to build a race track for it, and I'd like to put those walls in it. 2011-02-04 21:37:00

Cronos Dage, that's a pretty cool diagram, there. I do see a few problems, though: For instance, if you want to have the vehicle as an object that you emit (or just don't want to fiddle with wires), you need to set up a wireless transfer of the signal that activates the impact sensor. A tag sensor on the wall fitted to a tag on the vehicle would do it. I have a suspicion that's how Mm themselves did it.

Guess I'll have to try and see if I can pick apart a Hamstertron, lay out its logic, and try and make some semblance of sense of the curst thing!

Hmm..yeah, I've had ways to bypass that..it takes a few trials and errors because you know what to do but then you don't.2011-02-04 23:57:00

Welp, I spent some time dissecting a Hamstertron and found the answer: Purple. A purple tag sensor rigged to a destructor on an object will let the Hamstertron bust it down with a boost attack. The logic for it is convoluted - I don't fully follow all of what it's doing and why - but that much seems to be clear. Leave it to Mm to have it be something really simple...2011-02-05 21:12:00

I never looked at the hamstertron logic but I"d wager it's something like this:

There is a tag on the hamster with a specific color or label, let's say it's white and labelled SMASH. When the hamster is doing his smash attack, this tag gets activated (you can activate a tag with logic), and the destructable walls have an impact sensor set to REQUIRE TAG and set it to the same tag... white and labelled SMASH and hook it up to a destroyer.

It's that simple. Do remember that you can tell impact sensors to operate on a specific tag

Yep, that's pretty much spot on. The Hamstertron doesn't use labels, so any old (unlabelled) purple-sensor will do, and I basically built my smashable walls by making a microchip with an impact sensor rigged to require a purple tag, attached directly to a destructor with an appropriate effect (splat in my case). This works just fine in testing. 2011-02-05 22:04:00

Why on earth does it ~ have ~ to be purple, tell me? :3 Are all the other tag colours used up? I don't get it..2011-02-09 02:21:00

Because that's the colour Media Molecule set up the Hamstertron with.

So far, I've found that teal is a general "Hamster detection tag", and is useful for things like having the track change with the presence of a Hamstertron (and is used in the layer changing logic on the Hamstertron itself as well, I think), placing a red tag on an object makes it hazardous to the Hamstertron (and presumably other Avalonian vehicles too) and purple is used to signify the smash attack being active. There's green and yellow tags in there too, but their function is a bit opaque to me. The green ones are placed around the circumference of the wheel, while the yellow one I found is on one of the many microchips bearing the logic for the thing.
