Awake After Midnight

Archive: 15 posts

Ok, to be completely honest, I'm glad this is finally out of the create stage and published, it has completely collapsed twice making me almost rebuild the entire thing from scratch. As well as the boss and final escape scene taking hours upon hours to debug to the greatest of my ability.

HERE IT IS!

Awake After Midnight by Tomo_009 is on the air. Please, I implore you to try this one. It is not so much of a platform challenge as it is an experience, this time I really tried to get the atmosphere right and still keep some challenging and interesting platform sections in. If you try it and encounter no bugs, I promise you will enjoy it to some extent.

Please try it, give me feedback, bug reports etc. and heart if you like it that much. I myself am proud of this level.

Haha thanks, hope i get some real feedback on this one, I spent a long time on it (I know everyone says that, it takes ages to build levels in LBP)

I saw your comment, was that part difficult? I probably can't really tell because I know exactly what to do, which part exactly do you mean?

EDIT: Fixed a bug on the boss I hadn't noticed

It was that whenever I went through the gas bit I'd automatically land on the candles and die.

At the very end of the section? I can't do that, no matter how hard it try the best I can do to emulate that is land on a candle and then it moves me to the middle plane. You know you can just run right off the last platform right?

Alright. I like the art direction you are going with, but there are problems.

It's too dark. I would be fine if it was dark and there wasn't anything around that could kill you without warning. An example of this is after you go past the grave stones and trees at the beginning, a big thing is in front of the player and I just walked into it because I didn't know what it was and I died by gas. I quickly learned to jump over it, but it was still annoying. I was like "WTF!?"

The red skulls work most of the time, but sometimes they are frustrating. In the part where you have to go from skull to skull, the first skull serves no purpose. I jumped on it and tried to get to the moving platform and died twice doing that. Then I just jumped on the gravestone and jumped on the platform. What I am saying is take the first skull out. It only confuses the player because they expect that they are supposed to grab it even though it kills them.

I didn't finish because I couldn't see that there was a gap in the gas right in front of the monster's hand. I was like "What am I supposed to do!!?" and then found it out right as I lost my last life.

Hm, I'll fix the part with the gas in front of the monsters hand, I didn't realise it was difficult to see it was only in the last layer. Could you see what you had to do next?
Also, the part in the beginning was intentional, so on your first time through, it's kind of like an introduction with the zombie hand coming out of the grave. Also, that first skull can be used if you time it correctly, you can also use the tombstone if you find that easier, however I don't and I' sure there are others who would rather use that than risk falling in the gas trying to land on that small platform.

EDIT: I would suggest you try it again as you have only brushed the surface of the level and it becomes a lot more interesting after that part.

I've said it before I hate bumping, but I really really want some form of feedback on the level/design in it's entirety and it so far has a measly 24 plays and 1 heart which I find kind of disappointing. Is it horrible? I actually thought it was ok and while not as good as some of the masterpieces we are getting from authors such as Donkey Show, Geosatus etc, I believe it is far better than most of the levels available on the cool levels list and should give you a great experience even if it doesn't give you an insane platforming challenge.

I'll tell you what: I'll play this level when I wake up in the morning and let you know what I think. It's 2:00 AM right now and I need to get some sleep.

I just had a go at this and I am unable to give my full analysis due to some major problems:

- The poisonous gas at the start. Why is it hidden so that the player runs into it and ends up dying. Your level is dark enough as it is. Even after the player knows the gas is there the camera angle used makes it very difficult to judge the jump thus leading to the possibility of further, unnecessary death

- Some of those skulls over the river of gas really need to be tweaked. This first one in particular takes you all the way down into the gas without any warning.

- I got past all this and met the guy at the top of the drop. I dropped down and the next section completely baffled me. It was literally impossible to pass that hand with gas and I am struggling to understand how it is possible that you playtested all this. If there is some secret to getting past it then a speech bubble would definitely help here.

I will say that I otherwise enjoyed the visual style, the crosses were particular standouts. I hope my comments don't come off as harsh and that you appreciate that I took the time to play the level (2x actually, had to restart and I would normally not do that) and leave the feedback here for you. It seems like you have been away from the forums for a while so if your back I hope you remain active and try to leave feedback for other forum members as well. I will try this again once the probelms have been ironed out.

Hmm I think I might understand why it's been getting such bad feedback now (or promises of feedback that never come), I thought I had made it a lot simpler this time but it seems not. The part at the beginning is meant to kill you once, it's kind of like an intro to what is coming, once you know it's there, you can see it coming and making the jump? I may add a little light in front or something but the ground in the foreground goes right over the top. The next part you were talking about I think could be the huge thing that everyone may be getting stuck at, all you have to do is use the R1 button, the roof is as grabbable as the rest of the stage. I really hope someone tries this as I believe the last half to be the most enjoyable part. There is one more difficult part ahead but if you follow the instructions you can make it without dying once.

EDIT: Yeah I have been gone for a little while around exams and going out with friends a lot at the start of the holidays but I should be coming back a lot more now.
