Why are 3D layers still a glitch?
Archive: 17 posts
This seems like it should have been a standard create feature in LBP2. It has a million uses and Media Molecule is obviously OK with it being there since some of the games in the MM picks section use it. I could even swear that the standard backgrounds in create mode have a few more layers of depth to them. Does anyone think this is something they would consider adding in the future, maybe with some enhancements to what the glitch currently offers? | 2011-02-03 15:06:00 Author: automatica Posts: 33 |
Yes they like the 3D Layer Glitch, the LBP2 create mode background is "made" with it! But no, I don't think Mm would put it as a tool because bakscartch or whatever might get mad | 2011-02-03 15:31:00 Author: chinook3 Posts: 453 |
It really should be added as a permanent feature to the tool set - if they aren't going to patch fix it, then it gives creators who know how to use the glitch an unfair advantage - and means that your average creator will have to learn how to use the glitched objects (and they are very fiddly and annoying to use). When they could make a "Foreground/Background" as non-playable layers and let us place objects/materials in them freely. Bakscratch found the glitch - but it's all MM code, they own it - they can do what they like with it. | 2011-02-03 15:47:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Can't do everything at once...we've been given an unbelievable amount of new create mode goodness with LBP2...and remember the game was delayed just to get the current feature set completed. I too hope that MM someday provides tools for creating custom foregrounds/backgrounds but right now I'm ecstatic with what we did get. As for it being an unfair advantage, the extra layers don't magically equate to better levels...I don't see throwing even more stuff at the "average" creator as a good thing. * Currently enjoying creating my first glitch free level ever! | 2011-02-03 16:30:00 Author: fullofwin Posts: 1214 |

I agree that the game is fantastic. This isn't so much a complaint as it is just a general curiosity. The glitch doesn't equate to better levels, but when used properly, it can make great levels even better. | 2011-02-03 16:34:00 Author: automatica Posts: 33 |
I think that Prius level uses the 3-D glitch sometimes, like the pit at the construction zone. | 2011-02-03 16:44:00 Author: RagTagPwner Posts: 344 |
I think that Prius level uses the 3-D glitch sometimes, like the pit at the construction zone. Yes it does use the 3d glitch, and if you collected the "top-down windmill" object or something like that, you'll see it uses the 3d glitch without a doubt. | 2011-02-03 17:04:00 Author: blueyu2 Posts: 62 |
I concur. The current layer glitch is pretty annoying to use. I heard rumors that they were going to make this a feature in pre-release, and I was very disappointed when it didn't happen. | 2011-02-03 18:35:00 Author: googleit36 Posts: 50 |
I can explain pretty easily why the situation is like this... The "3D" layers (or glitch layers as I call them) aren't working like normal layers, all the background layers are in the thin back layer and the front layers are in the create mode "hover mode" layer. Mm wouldn't want to have a feature that works like that, it's way too glitchy. The reason they won't make the layers work properly is that it would require too much from the system, levels would become laggy really easily. Also, they haven't removed it completely because I think they like what people do with it, this is as close as Mm is going to have this glitch as a feature. | 2011-02-03 18:50:00 Author: napero7 Posts: 1653 |
You...do realize what you say don't you? You're asking why a GLITCH isn't implemented into normal gameplay... Like just mentione above, its because its a GLITCH. Either that,or it can be because of that other thing they said about being unable to use the community's ideas without paying the people who duggested it for using it. (No, they have not used any of our suggestions at all, they've merely been inspired by it. ) Its more likely that its the glitch deal, but I'm just saying it MAY also be that. | 2011-02-03 19:05:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |

^lol yeah I remenber reading in an official thread by MM, about the history of the game, that at the very beginning, the game was an opened 3D world, there's was no layers limitations like now... for diverse reasons, they limited it to those layers afterwards. And they actually said that the layers glitch was possible because of this initial programmation of the game (I'm gonna search for that thread...) So I don't think it would such an impossible thing to "re-open" some additionals layers! Let's forget about the extra front layers, let's say just 3 extra background layers more, to place objects and shapes, but not playable by sackboy...and it would be heaven : We could create a nice scenery in the background, and focus on gameplay on the 3 main playable layers! lol, I've said that so many time, in so many threads.. | 2011-02-03 19:47:00 Author: dajdaj03 Posts: 1486 |
Because it doesn't change the gameplay. Sackboy can only move in the three default layers, and more would be confusing if used incorrectly (95% of community if the tool was made official). I'm all for it in film/cinematic only levels though. It adds a lot of depth. Literally and conceptually. | 2011-02-03 20:11:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
This seems like it should have been a standard create feature in LBP2. Sure, but it's still a bug, and (at least in LBP1) can seriously crash the PS3 in certain configurations, so I doubt they'd include it as a proper tool until this has been addressed. See this post (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=25147-Does-the-layer-glitch-work-on-water&p=435589#post435589) for details. | 2011-02-03 21:09:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
Not sure, but I hope they dont remove it, I have to much fun with it XD. | 2011-02-03 21:34:00 Author: Bloo_boy Posts: 1019 |

If MM were to implement this feature, it would obviously no longer be a glitch; That's not much of an argument at all. They also own the code to the game so they can do what they want in terms of taking that idea and expanding on it. It's not like the thought of adding custom backgrounds was the sole idea of this creator alone. It's something I've thought about long before this glitch came about. If it's a processing power concern then so be it, but in terms of usability, the team at MM are amazingly creative and I don't doubt they would find a practical way to use it. Once again, I'm not complaining, I'm just curious. In response to dajdaj03, I agree. The front layers may be a little bit much but they already the 3 background layers in the game. You can see them in create mode but cannot access them so maybe this is something they have in the works already?? | 2011-02-04 05:21:00 Author: automatica Posts: 33 |
