Arr-o-Matic! (Survival Challenge)

Archive: 6 posts

Thanks for taking a look at my thread! I was quite an active creator of survival challenges back in the beginning of LBP1, but my activity slowly died out due to schoolwork and most of my ideas being too complex for LBP1. This has changed with the release of LBP2 though, and I'm back for more (hopefully unique) survival challenges and mini games.

A long time ago, my level "SackCrush 3000" got spotlighted. It was a very early project and is, by today's standards, both technically and visually quite dusty and outdated. It just doesn't match my standard anymore, so I decided to create a sequel that would match up to the expectations.

That's Arr-o-Matic! - a pirate-themed survival for 1-4 players. You're trapped in a room with a ceiling that consists of 12 pillars. With increasing frequency, point bubbles will appear under certain pillars. You've only got a few seconds to grab them before the pillar will stomp down, crushing all bubbles and sackpeople that happen to be beneath it.

The game is all about self-assessment. You have to make fast and right decisions in quick succession if you want to survive. There's still a certain degree of luck involved, but I spent days fine-tuning every single time variable in the level, and I'm pretty happy with the result.

It's been finished and published on LBP2, but it has been created on LBP1, so there's no fancy new stuff to be found. Only solid (and, hopefully, fun) gameplay.

Any feedback is appreciated. I haven't checked F4F since I'm currently really busy, but I will certainly visit your levels and give feedback at one point or another if you kindly took the time to play my level.

Thanks!

great idea to do a remake of your MM picked survival challenge. already in LBP1 it was addicting and really deserved the shiny MM Pick

The LBP2 version feels much more fair. It makes me feel that I am responsible for my fail and not the "machine" though it's random but never impossible. A great balance between luck and skill.
Good use of the holo material and 3 bubbles per pillar are better than 1 (like in LBP 1 level).
Visuals were a little boring but gameplay is the main aspect of this survival.

Well done =)

I can't play this when I run past the highscore screen it ends the level. I had to turn on my other controller so I wouldn't trigger it.2011-02-06 01:58:00

I had a lot of fun playing this today. I'm terrible at survival levels but this one felt much less random than others. When first started playing and got trapped at the edge of the level in the last column space I was sure I would get crushed but that never happened. The level "plays fair"! If you keep your wits about you you could get a really highscore (including some lucky multipliers).

Maybe the level could do with a few decorations to relieve the plain wood - even some skulls or treasure in the gaps in the back wall.

It's a simple idea in way but it works beautifully and is a lot fun to play. It definitely deserves more plays. and <3 from me.

Thanks for pointing this out! I've fixed it

Thanks for the great feedback Yeah, the visuals really are a bit bland at the moment - I've added some turning cogs in the background to spice things up, but I guess that's not enough. I can add some decorations, but physical objects are problematic since I need every inch of the front layers, and already have cogs all over the place in the background. I'll try my best though!
