LBP Clan/Designers League?

Archive: 41 posts

First off, I dont post in many other places except the AU PS forums, but I do read this forum a lot, especially anticipating the interview feedback.

Dont know if an idea like this has been posted, but why dont you guys form a LBP Clan/designers league exclusive to members or selected (dedicated) members only.
The clan/league area would hold blue prints for levels and contraptions for when the game comes out, which would make items incredibly easy to design.
I know that we dont know exactly how things will work, and dont know everything that is available to us, but a lot of you have a pretty good idea of what will be in the game just from having seen all the video footage online.

The blue prints however detailed they might be, no matter how they work will be able to be implemented into the game pretty easily one way or another, I would think you can set shearing/breaking limits so things can be realistic/non realistic(I heard someone talk about 'breaking rope&apos

Anyway straying slighty from the topic, if you make this league you can market not only the popularity of this site but also each and everyone of the league members designing capabilities.
Design levels to attract outside people into your clan, and preserve the league area for the top designers who will make items available to clan members.

I dont know, just an idea(s)
You guys seem to have the fan base for it, and personally Id like to see regional designer leagues.
Aussie LBP fans ftw.

I've thought about something like this. I'd like to be part of a team one day, wether it be my own, smaller team... or a bigger team for this site, for example.

But I'm interested.

this is just my opinion but we should just stick with the "quality controlled logo" , this way their won't be any elitism among members who are in the "elite" team and those who aren't.

and Aer0 we are planning on having friendly team based contests (creating levels, things, etc...) so thats something to look forward too

Quarter, I see where you are coming from, and in the right circumstances it could be a great thing to do. The problem is, that setup attracts people hungry to be the best, instead of people who love to play the game. I'm all for showcasing the best levels and items and giving credit, but I don't believe that certain members always make better stuff. That kind of setup repels people who love the game but aren't very good at creating.

For example, forgehub.com is a website dedicated to Halo 3's Forge. They have the same kind of setup you suggest: a select few elite members who's levels are always showcased on the frontpage no matter what they make. Other than them, almost nobody gets recognition for their creations. For a game that promotes it's community based content like LittleBigPlanet, that setup is hardly ideal.

Let me suggest an alternative: why don't we, as a community, have one section for members to submit their levels, another for their blueprints, and so on. The staff of this site could every so often(maybe every week or two) select the best out of those categories and post them to the frontpage. That way, their awesome level or item, along with the author, recieves the recognition they deserve and we don't have to have an elite group of people that are considered "always better" than the rest.

Thoughts?

Well we have a 'Prize room' planned where people put the items they want to share in and everybody on this site has access to them all for free...
so long as its possible, whats planned is that we build a sort've hotel, where everybody has a room (their name will be inside the room so if somebody wants specific members items they know where to look..) theres an elevator that goes up so you can see alll your rooms. You can put some items/ blueprints in your room and pick items up from others rooms...

I guess its a little like peer-to-peer things.. but does that satisfy everyone? I mean, theres no eliteism going on and people still get to share

Yea, the idea at the beginning wasnt suppose to suggest or hold any elitism.
I was scribbling stuff down before going to work, but the mixed idea was suppose to hold back some great ideas from getting out into that junk yard we call the web, and only keep certain designs/creations in-house.

i love this idea should be good. the rooms better be big though
Is it going to look very sleek five star like or is it more just a box room with an elevator leading you to it. I just thought of a cool idea for a door mechanism. i get photoshop on monday so i'll draw it up then

Threw this together in paint to give you a rough idea of what I was thinking of.

Great idea Maltay, and with the drawing I really understand now its like an awesome warehouse full of goodies. Now i have to admit i didnt read all the post completely just a quick skim through so this may have been said already or just assumed but it would have to be a private room right?

Yeah, it's a personal room. Each member gets a slot if they decided they want one.

You know, Maltay, this setup would be fairly easy to maintain, as well. When we finish building the hotel but it hasn't been customized, we can save it as an item. As more people want room, we can just add another hotel in the level.

By the way, the customization should only go so far. I mean, too much stuff and we won't have room for the actual items.

This might be a bit more complicated, but I think it could work really well with what Maltay said above?

If each user placed a key in their level, and each key linked to their own level full of their own inventions? Obviously the only way for people to get into those levels would be an invite / key. Personally I think that's a more effective way (Albeit a little more confusing), as there isn't really a limit to how many items you put in?

But it's up to you guys

EDIT : Andddddd! If we set a template room up e.g. you make the level look like a hotel room, and everyone who wanted a room downloaded it, and linked it as mentioned above, it could give quite a realistic feel to it?

I like that idea so much more, actually. That way it's that much easier to have more stuff in each level. Let's hope Maltay agrees.

That idea sounds familiar.

I'm glad you guys are actually going to implement the idea, & as I said before, it would be a great HUB for the LBPC community.

So wait, let me get this straight... A key in your room that links to a level with all your contraptions and stuff?

Cuz lemme tell you, I wouldn't like someone that isn't me posting stickers and making mayhem in my room. XD

Yes, but your room would be private and locked, so you could only get in with said key.

No it was going to be collectables that you made in your room. Hopefuly nobody will vandalize anybody elses room

There may also be a limit on the amount of collectables you add, we havent discussed it yet. It just makes sure only your really good items get shared.

Now, here's my question: What if people want to change what is in their room? Should we have a limit; say, every two weeks you can request to change what is in your room, but no more often than that? I just think it will be hectic trying to keep up with all the changes everyone wants to make.

2 weeks sounds good, unless we do the level rooms thing, cause that can hold tons, and they can access it themselves.2008-08-09 21:37:00

That's what I'm saying. Your idea is better because we don't have to manage anything. The user can change what is in his level at any point, so it's easier.

Yeah, and another point to go with that is - You can literally only fit smaller things into a room... I know for a fact I'm gonna be making high powered catapults, which will be HUGE. And I definitely won't be storing that in a hotel

Is it possible to do what he's suggesting? If it is we'll go with that. But keep your prize rooms bedroom themed to stick with the hotel theme!

Yeah, I'm almost positive it is. In each room, we would place a level key which would unlock that person's level. That way you could go and download his level and pick up the stuff for yourself. More room for him, less maintenance for us.

The key thing is definitely the way to go. I thouht the same thing as i was reading the first posts and was thinking of mentioning it but as i got down to the key post i realised someone else got there first and was thinking on the same level as me2008-08-09 22:55:00

Yeah, I posted that key idea when I originally thought of the hotel.

It is definitely the way to go, the hotel simply makes the players' levels more accessible, being, by definition, a HUB.

You'd have to work on getting one person promoted to a status where they are allowed a lot of development space(I assume cartman).
Also isnt there a height limit to the maps?
And wouldnt the members at the bottom be more vunerable to 'better designs' simply because they are seen first?
Unless you did a web of hubs(categorized hubs or something of the sort)

Also it maybe good for cartman(if you know php and the sort) to program a self maintaining database of contraptions/maps.
Like how comment posts/torrents work, where people can + or - points for maps/contraptions from a web page and that would show who developed it, and how to find them.
Of course the + and - would determine what gets shown to share or hidden from sight but wouldnt directly effect the user(as we all can have good or bad ideas) but some ideas can be just horrible.

Edit: BTW Im up for anyone who wants to start blue printing stuff for LBP. Im from Oz so it'd be good to have some people who are close by.
Also remember the idea of this is to promote the members from LBP Central, so even though there is already ways to categorize favorite maps etc, this would directly effect the status of LBP Central rather than a random personage.

If I knew how to create a self-maintaining database, believe me, I would take a whack at it. Right now, however, I have no idea how to code, so unless someone on this site knows how and would be up for trying, I can't promise anything.

PHP, MYSQL in that concept is easy, its just a matter of putting it on a page which is readable lol(design isnt my thing)
And also a host which isnt on my own computer, I got my own apache server set up, but its pretty private and I dont have it on much.
Busy semester at Uni

Now that I think about it, it might not be the best idea. We don't really need one and I don't think many would use it.

Lemme get this straight.

A hub where you find keys to get into the LBPC communities contraption levels?

Is there going to be a password to get into the hub?

because people could just get the keys without comeing to the site.

Maybe we could have a key like in the one tutorial where u have to get the right pattern of stickers in order to access the hub.

The only way to get the key is to join the site.

and in order to make people wanna get in the hub we can display a cool item and tell them that you can get it free as well as a bunch other items by joining the site.

I don't think that this hotel is going to take up much room...we might need 30+ rooms in the end but its still perfectly doable on a large crater i think, compared to some of the maps we've seen so far that the devs have made

Its going to be a private room, and your all going to have to befriend Sackperson (at the minute, thats the neutral account for the forum host space)

i guess but it wouldnt it be better to promote the site if it was public and needed a code to open the door?

that way everyone could see the lvl just cant use it.... that way we can show off a cool item or two.

Uhm, Personaly I dont think so.. If you can password lock levels then sure, we'll consider it, but we have other ways of promoting the site

What if someone goes into the hotel, and starts moving all the keys into different rooms? It'll cause chaos ;/

You aren't able to change someone else's level unless you elect to go into "edit" mode. From there, you can't overwrite their existing level, so nobody but the original author can make changes.
