Minigame Manor

Archive: 5 posts

At one point, I was making a level that would be my biggest in a very long time; it was a giant mansion filled to the brim with a bunch of minigames. However, I got very frustrated, as it was extremely difficult to build; there were so many parts of the level that randomly broke, it was ridden with bugs, and looked very ugly. I vowed to never work on the level until LBP 2 came out.

Boy, let me tell you was that a good idea! Because of the amount of new features, this level can finally be made, and with the extra polish it deserves!

The level will consist of about 30 minigames (a big step up from the 18 minigames planned in the first version), with a big, fancy mansion to act as the hub. The hub splits off into three hallways that leads to different level links: Free for all, 1 vs. 3, and 2 vs. 2 minigames. I don't have ideas for all of the games, but I do have quite a few. I will post them all at a later time, but for now, could you give any recommendations, words of advice, or warnings?

Well try not to things that are too complicated seeing as these are minigames but like one of the rooms could be something where there are four seats with controlinators and you control like an 8-bit looking Jet and you have to try and survive the longest. Its a side-scrolling type thing. Theres a timer and point giver for each couple seconds you live. Something like that maybe?2011-02-02 22:34:00

The spirit of that idea could work, but the general theme of the entire level is that of a giant mansion. Thus, all of the games take place in rooms that could be found in one (albeit modified so that people can competitively destroy each other). A side-scrolling shooter in space simply could not fit in this theme as a result.

Since I have more time, I think I can explain some of the minigames in more detail.

Free for All:
1. To a T: Players are in control of a platform that can only ascend. There is also a point somewhere above them that they must raise the platform to without going overboard. The closer they get the platform to that point, the more points they get. That is, unless they get the thing past that point, where they would lose points.
2. Nimble Knuckles: Players are in control of a giant hand in a kitchen. There are foodstuffs scattered about, and the goal is to get the most points by articulating the hand into picking the food up and dropping it in a chute.
3. Berserk Clockwork: Situated on a giant pendulum, players must survive on a constantly swinging platform for the longest time.

1 vs. 3:
1. Risky River: One player is placed in a moat; his/her goal is to simply survive. The three other players attempt to defeat the other player; one player controls the water level to drown the first player or make him/her fall into a bed of spikes. The other two control two pistons (horizontal and vertical) that connect to an air generator to prevent the first player from reaching it.
2. Pain-chinko: One player drops down explosives onto the other three, who must survive. There are giant posts constantly moving back and forth in order to divert the explosive's path.
3. Hopping Mad: Three players are atop pogo sticks (for now; they will probably be some sort of industrial platform later) hopping about. The other player moves the platform they are on in an attempt to make them fall down one of the many holes scattered on it.
4. Fearsome Gears: One player adjusts the direction a series of gears moves, and the other three must survive for as long as they can.

2 vs. 2:
1. Scrappy Scaffolds: There are two teams; both contain one player on a platform and armed with a paintinator, and the other in control of two pistons to move that platform. This platform explodes when hit with enough paint balls, so one team must maneuver the platform to get the best angle to shoot down the opponent's platform.

Any recommendations for music? I have "Tea by the Sea" for Risky River, but I think I should compose my own music for the rest of them if I can't find any fitting music. Oh, and the tutorials for each of these will use "Infotain Me," just because. I also have an idea to use my own voice to announce when games start and begin; not enough people use voice acting, you know?
