Rotator Problems
Archive: 5 posts
I'm trying to rotate an object but when I put a rotator on it, it always rotates with the center in the middle of the object but I want the object to rotate from the end of my object. Any ideas? | 2011-02-02 22:15:00 Author: Jetstorm44 Posts: 1 |
You could use tags and followers... place two different colour tags separated by a decent length on a longish piece of hologram. Put the rotator in the centre of these two tags. Place a follower to follow each of the tags (strength 100%) on the object you want to rotate and the object should rotate along with the hologram. Now you can change the position of these followers to change your centre of rotatation! Bearing in mind that the centre of rotation should be in the middle of the two followers! Hope that makes sense!? | 2011-02-03 14:12:00 Author: Dangerlove Posts: 88 |
If I recall correctly, the problem with the above idea is that objects in LBP don't rotate on their physical center axis (or whatever the technical term would be for that; I have no idea). Instead, objects rotate based on their center of gravity. If that truly is the case (I'm sure it is - I just read a thread in the Tutorials section about grid movement and how rotating objects on the grid was difficult because objects don't rotate on their physical center point, but on their center of gravity). If you can determine where that point is, the above idea would still work, you would just have to attach the tags based on where the center of gravity is. However, it depends on the object you want to rotate. Depending on the size and shape, the two points may be the same. | 2011-02-03 14:36:00 Author: sixfearstheseven Posts: 19 |
Any ideas? All I can think of is to bolt the object to something static where you want the center of rotation to be. Depends on your specific case of course. | 2011-02-03 21:24:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
All I can think of is to bolt the object to something static where you want the center of rotation to be. That would definitely be the easiest solution and if it's an option, that's what I'd do if I were you. objects rotate based on their center of gravity. Exactly right. You could attempt to manipulate your object's center of gravity, by say, adding mass to the area that you want it to rotate around. Sure, you're going to be using a zero gravity tweaker, but that affects weight, not mass. So if you have a cardboard circle with a metal circle glued to its lower hemisphere, it will rotate at almost the center of the metal circle since metal is 20 times as massive as cardboard. If that's not good enough for you, you could stick a tag on a bit of holo or whatever, and slap a tag follower onto your object at the point you want it to rotate around. Unlike rotators, which take the whole object into account, followers consider themselves the center of the world (yeah, they're a bit egocentric), so it will be working against your rotator trying to keep itself centered and your object should rotate roughly around that point. You may need to crank up the speed and acceleration of the follower to get it to work right, but I believe it should work. | 2011-02-03 21:43:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |
