A couple of (possibly very simple) questions

Archive: 6 posts

Hello, I have a couple of questions that might be really easy to answer. Neither relates to something I'm actually using in a level, I'm just curious.

Firstly, how can a controllinator be enter-able, then exited, then no longer enter-able?

Secondly, how can e.g. basketball levels work out who threw the ball into the basket, and therefore who to give the points to?

Thank you!

I think that the controllinator would have to have a tag that it is activated to eject you, the tag would remain active preventing re-entry.

As for the basketball thing the score giver tool can be tweaked to automatically sense which player did the scoring, I am not sure if their is any other logic involved with the b-ball level in particular.

OK, I'll have a go at that. As I said, it's not actually for any level I'm making, I just want to understand how things are done!

I thought I'd tried what you suggested re: the controllinator. Perhaps I did something wrong; I'll have another look.

I did wonder if the game just automatically works out who threw the ball for basketball scoring, in the way it knows who killed who in versus shooting levels. I'll also experiment with that, I think.

Thanks for the response!

WARNING: This post turned out much longer than expected. If you want to skip the not-so-important parts, scroll down to the next line of BOLD text.

The easiest method for a basketball type game to keep track of each player's score is by using the Score Givers since, as was already pointed out, they automatically keep track of who earned the points. However, there are going to be cases where, though it's the easiest method, it isn't the best option. It's funny you ask this because I am just about finished with an arcade style mini-game that started out as a basketball game (good thing I didn't stick with making a basketball game - I honestly have no idea why I thought it was a unique idea and that no one else would have done it yet) but evolved into...something lol. I don't know what game to compare it to, but anyway, you control a little vehicle that is attached to a track and moves left and right, but stays between the posts on either end that hold up that track. Below is a basket-type thing that randomly moves left and right at varying speeds. The goal is to emit a red holographic ball and have it land in the basket. The initial goal is worth 500 points, and multiplies by two if you manage to score five in a row, then resets back to 500 and starts the cycle over. If you MISS, you lose 500 points. If you miss twice, you lose 1000. Three times, 1500, up to a 2500 for five missed shots in a row. You have 2 minutes to score as many points as possible. I chose to keep the point system set up this way (I could have the 5 goal streak continue beyond five goals, or stay at 4000 points for every goal after the fifth) because it will ensure that there are a wide variety of final scores on the score board. In the many times I've tested it, I've gone from 80,000 back to 10,000 quite quickly. It will make things interesting once published (if anyone plays it, that is lol).

But, anyway, back to my point: the final version will have FOUR of these games that are remotely controlled via an off-screen Controlinator. What I'm doing is adding a few features that make they game a little more competitive: there will be abilities, such as temporarily disabling an opponents machine so he can't score for a few seconds, earning a single shot that you can fire off at an opponents basket to steal the points they earned from their last goal, and one idea that I REALLY want to make happen: a powerup that lets you take control of your opponents machine and triggers the emitter to begin emitting automatically, allowing you to focus on making sure you miss as many shots as you can, and it awards you 50% of the points that you would normally LOSE for missing, while stay subtracting 100% of the points from each missed shot from the total score of the player whose machine you took control of (you'll want to avoid scoring because the original player will get 4000 points and you will lose control of their machine earlier than you would have).

AND MY POINT IS...

It's hard to explain why or how, but I'm finding that in order to award these bonus points, I can't rely on Score Givers alone to know who to award the points to. Since the ball is emitted automatically during this bonus and the points from each shot could either be awarded to one player while subtracted from the other, or the max score is awarded to the only one player, I have special tags and impact sensors that detect where the ball lands, attached to logic that tells the Score Givers who to give/take points from.

Wow. This post went much longer than I had ever intended, so I apologize for that and commend those of you patient enough to read it. All I was trying to say was that, for the most part, Score Givers are perfectly capable of making sure the proper player is awarded the points he/she has earned, but as with everything else in LBP2, sometimes you're forced to adapt and find a way to create the desired outcome with the tools we have. Thankfully, the tools are incredibly flexible. I hesitate to say that there are things that can NOT be done in Create, because so far, it seems everyone is finding a way to create things that seem impossible.

Thanks for that reply too!

I think my questions were answered pretty successfully in the first response, but I appreciate the time you took to type as well, and your post was very interesting also. I'll definitely check your level out once it's done; it sounds very complex!

No problem. I agree it was already answered, I just figured I'd throw my thoughts out there anyway, but am glad you found it interesting anyway.

Hopefully I'll have the level done soon, so if you remember, check for it in a week or two.
