randomizers - one at a time problem

Archive: 8 posts

I have multiple emitters (set to "emit once") that are hooked up to the output of a selector, the selector's input is connected to a randomizer which is set to "one at a time".

The problem is when the randomizer chooses the same selector slot twice in a row, the second time nothing gets emitted since the signal from the selector doesn't go off between randomizer inputs.

Is there a way to avoid selectors having one of their output on at all times, can they somehow be turned off when they aren't receiving any input signals?

or can randomizers somehow be forced to never pick the same slot twice in a row?

Have you tried not using a selector? Based on your description, you could wire the randomizer right to the emitters. If the emitters are set to 1 shot, then it should theoretically have the same effect without being on permanently.2011-02-02 05:41:00

Thanks for the reply. That gets rid of the permanently on problem but if the randomizer picks the same emitter twice, still nothing gets emitted. Is there any way around that, or any way to make the randomizer not make the same selection twice in a row?

edit:a timer with a start count up between the emitter and the randomizer seems to fix that.

I have a level I'm making that uses randomizers to one shot emitters right now
You can set-up the randomizer to do this pretty easily actually.
Set the time on Max and Minimum to 0.1 and its Maximum off time and Minimum off time to anything you want.
Every time the randomizer turns on, it always will select one output immediately if set to 0.1, then it will turn itself off making its outputs go away.
It can select the same thing 2 times, 3 times, etc. and will work because it's not constantly out-putting a true signal. Just make sure the emiter is set to 1 shot.

Hope this helps

If you set the minimum off time to something higher than 0, it should always turn off before it selects another output, meaning if the emitter is 1 shot, it will emit multiple times.2011-02-02 07:27:00

Ah thanks guys, I hadn't played with the minimum/maximum off time, wasn't sure what it was for. Thanks again. 2011-02-02 08:58:00

I was trying out the min/max off time but the options for that were greyed out on the randomizers and I couldn't use it.
I perhaphs forgot to mention I'm using the "input action override pattern" on the randomizers.

I have one randomizer on the emitters and another one which randomly chooses between 3 sequences, min/max off time was greyed out on both if I have it set to "input action override pattern".

In that case, you'll need to implement some kind of timer to tell it to stop randomly picking outputs for a short while.2011-02-02 20:01:00
