Subtitles with Voice-overs
Archive: 8 posts
Ok, this isn't just another "how do you use subtitles?!?!?!?!?" thread. I'm aware that they must be on a sequencer to get the subtitles option to be enabled. My problem lies not in getting subtitles to work per se, but getting subtitles to work with voice overs. I've created dialogue in a cutscene, and have played around with it a while, but to no avail. The subtitles work perfectly fine until I record a voice over with my headset. As soon as I do that, the subtitles disappear for some reason. I've tried using multiple magic mouths (one for the voice acting, one for the subtitles), and still nothing. Am I missing something here? If you know how to make voice-overs with subtitles, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate the assistance in my time of dire need. | 2011-02-02 03:01:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |
I just tried it and it worked fine. Are you recording the voice onto the same mouth as the subtitles or are you trying to use different mouths? Won't work with different mouths. If all else fails, you can try recording the voice onto a sackbot behaviour chip (but then you'd need to use a sackbot) and putting the subtitles into a mouth, but it really should work with subtitles and recorded voice on the same mouth. | 2011-02-02 20:19:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |
I agree with Sehven on this, I just got back from trying this out as it will be something I need as well pretty soon. I was able to put a magic mouth on a sequencer, type in my text, record the audio and then get both to play back when I started up the sequencer. It didn't work perfectly every time when I was experimenting with magic mouths triggering the next magic mouth in the sequence. (Couldn't do it.) I got into a state where I would get the subtitle but no audio. However this seemed to be a state where it hadn't finished the previous playthrough and was sitting at the end just showing the subtitle and was already past the audio bit. A combination of starting/stopping the sequencer got everything back to normal operation. | 2011-02-02 21:37:00 Author: Trindall Posts: 297 |
Well, I tried using just one magic mouth with both my recording and my subtitles, and it didn't work, so then I tried to use a separate one for each, still no no avail. For the record, I am using a sackbot with an actor name, and the magic mouth works fine if I unpause the game and have Preview checked off, but if I'm actually in play mode, they don't show up at all. EDIT: Well, I figured it out. Turns out you need subtitles turned on in settings in order to see any subtitles on a magic mouth that uses a voice recording. | 2011-02-03 00:42:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |
....if I'm actually in play mode, they don't show up at all..... Turns out you need subtitles turned on in settings in order to see any subtitles on a magic mouth that uses a voice recording. Oh, I didn't even think to check it in play mode. My subtitles are turned off too, so I woulda' been scratching my head just like you. Good to know about that. It's kind of annoying, though, that you can't just force the subtitles on a level, but that you have to depend on the player to have them turned on. You could do something funny where the character says something different in the subtitles than what's spoken. | 2011-02-03 02:30:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |

Well, they work whether the player has subtitles turned on or not if there's no voice recording. I guess MM's logic is "if the mouth is speaking, subtitles aren't necessary unless the player wants them". You could do something funny where the character says something different in the subtitles than what's spoken. Hah, that would be quite humorous! Maybe I should implement that in one spot in the level/series that I'm working on... | 2011-02-03 02:34:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |
I have a similar issue. Hopefully one of you might be able to help. I'm creating a cinematic level intro, and it includes a number of Sackbots talking to the player. In order to get the Sackbots to talk along to my recordings, the magic mouths have to be on the Sackbot's chipboards. That's easy enough. However if a magic mouth is on a Sackbot's chipboard, the subtitle option disappears. I don't want the pop-up speech bubbles. I want subtitles for the Sackbots. It isn't allowing me the option though. If I apply the magic mouths to the sequencer, subtitles work just fine, but then the Sackbot's mouth isn't moving to the recording. Any work arounds? EDIT. Nevermind, I managed to work around it. For those interested, if you put a second sequencer directly onto your Sackbot's chipboard, stick the magic mouth of that, and then link that sequencer up to a 'NOT gate' on your main sequencer, it not only allows your Sackbot to speak along to the recording, but also provides subtitles. | 2011-02-10 15:19:00 Author: Wayward Posts: 120 |

Or you can put the magic mouth on your sequencer and assign it an Actor Name. | 2011-02-17 01:22:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |
