LittleBigPrius is Live

Originally posted here (http://www.littlebigplanetarium.com/index.php?/topic/183-littlebigprius/).

I was torn as to where to post this, but the level I made for Sony has finally been published. It's called LittleBigPrius, and it is meant to promote and kick off a build-your-own level contest, where you are tasked with designing your own Prius-inspired level. It's not published under my account, so I recommend it.

LittleBigPrius lbp.me Link (http://lbp.me/v/x8c7yw)

From the Sony Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/01/20/littlebigprius-contest-puts-you-in-the-drivers-seat/):

http://www.viddler.com/explore/sceablog/videos/1550/

When Toyota Prius let us know they were interested in working with LittleBigPlanet 2, we knew that their emphasis on harmony between man, machine and the environment was a good fit for Sackboy?s world. As gamers, we also knew that we could do something clever that the community would enjoy. So, together, we developed a LBP2 level called ?LittleBigPrius?, which will be the focal point of an upcoming ?create your own level? contest.

LittleBigPlanet 2 was just released to stores this week, so here?s your chance to get your creative juices flowing and win something big. How big? We?re talking a 46? Sony Bravia 3D HDTV?that?s how big!

If you are already familiar with LittleBigPlanet 2, you?ll know that its appeal doesn?t come just from the on-disc single and multi-player experience (which are fabulous), but also from the ability to create your own games. Our ?LittleBigPrius? level is just one of the endless variety of games which will be created by the community.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5282/5371021851_0c7e4326ea.jpg

LittleBigPrius for LittleBigPlanet 2

?LittleBigPrius? consists of a traditional platforming section (with puzzles, of course!) followed by a top-down driving portion made possible by LBP2?s new tools. Along the way, you?ll be able to collect a number of items which you can then use to create your own levels. That?s where the contest comes in! We want you to use these collected items, and anything else your clever little minds can come up with, to create your own Prius-inspired LBP2 level. Be sure to name your level ?Prius_[Your Level Name Here]? so that it can be easily located (and, no, we don't want you to actually use the words ?Your Level Name Here? unless that?s the best you can come up with? in which case, a contest based upon creativity is probably not for you).

When the contest officially begins, publish your level online so that members of the LBP community will have a chance to play and comment upon it. Most importantly, they?ll be able to ?heart? it if they really like it. When the contest ends, the ten highest-ranked levels, as chosen by the community, will be selected as our finalists. From these finalists, SCEA will choose one Grand Prize winner and four First Prize winners on the basis of originality, quality/polish, Toyota Prius brand awareness, and use of the items obtained from our LittleBigPrius level. The Grand Prize winner will be awarded a 46? Sony Bravia 3D HDTV and a PlayStation Move hardware bundle which includes a PlayStation 3 system, the PlayStation Eye camera, PlayStation Move motion controller and Sports Champions game. The four First Place winners will receive a PlayStation Move Sports Champions bundle, consisting of the game, the PlayStation Eye camera and a PlayStation Move motion controller.

Please be sure that you have a valid e-mail address associated with your PSN ID, since that is how we will be contacting the winners. Check back on the Blog and PlayStation.com for full details when we announce the release of the ?LittleBigPrius? level and the start of the contest coming soon.

It feels good to have it finished. The initial feedback has been great, despite the "What was the point...?" comments. Heh. Can't please everyone.

where's the train track? the level is beautiful but there was no train track in the town. thanks for doing this level i really enjoy how well the top down driving level worked so well 2011-02-01 13:35:00

Funny you should mention that...

I have a hand drawn sketch of the top-down level that originally included a train-track and a train barreling through at random times. Sadly, the play space is quite literally running right up to the level boundaries and the level is nearly maxed out. That, and both levels to be made in about 20 days.

It's the thought that counts, right?

Sounds cool, can't wait to give it a shot at making my own level. Im gonna go play them now.

But I gotta say I don't like how the winner is decided. Still, its not like they can personally check thousands of levels, that's what we're for

Greatly made, clean and cute looking level Comph!

I thought the prizes would be some specifically created content like some few stickers or decorations,
but still the custom objects are well made, and the music is cool (you made it?)

Congrats!

Hm... maybe I should enter the contest?

If Matt didn't make this level, I probably wouldn't touch a prius in lbp, either. But seeing how he's my friend and worked extremely hard, I'll make an exception. ^_^

Now we're never safe :/

I don't think I'll enter though, I haven't get "teh skillz" for something that isn't overly-arty. Good luck to everyone going for it though.

Despite the obvious product placement, 'tis a good level.

However, is it my imagination, or are the steering controls backwards when you're reversing?

Haha. It's funny you should mention that. They are inverted, but it's not really backwards.

Think about it. You are sitting in your car, and you turn the wheel to the right. Which direction do you rotate when you move forward? Clockwise. Which direction would you rotate when you go backwards? Counterclockwise. Yep, it was intentional.

Trust me, I tried it both ways, and seriously considered the difference. This seemed like it made more sense.

Correct, but in the car in the level it goes clockwise in both cases.

Phenomenal level man (I especially loved the whole Tree House part and I think this was a genius move on Toyota's part to advertise in such an innovative way), but I have to ask, did Sony pay you at all for doing this? Because it seems like your name hasn't received any recognition for creating the level until now. Not only that but I'm kinda curious as to why they reached out to a community member to make it instead of Media Molecule...still cool all the same. Thanks for this! 2011-02-02 00:13:00

All squeamishness regarding the product placement aside, this was a really well made level. The atmosphere was great and I think it's what the fellows at Toyota and Sony were aiming for. The driving section was great (A Prius jumping a ramp. Look me in the eye and tell me that didn't sound outlandishly awesome) and the objects were well made. The objects were difficult enough to get that they it didn't bore but simple enough so that even a novice player could do it... Very well balanced, IMO.

But I'm also trying very hard to not post certain Jeff Dunham routines as well

Nice enviroment. Very natural.
Gameplay was good despite the inverted reverse.

Was it you who had the inverted reverse in that beta kart racer level comphermc?

Hey great job mate the level looks and plays great, it's a shame most of the community is commenting on the blatant advertising and inability of the Prius as a vehicle rather than devoting their attention to your level

I was going to comment on the reversing issue as well but I figure you're sick of hearing it. Just a question, did Sony give you the models for the Prius or did you end up having to make them yourself. If you did, wow I respect and pity you at the same time, so much detail O.O

Isn't that TV worth like $3k?
I don't know about everyone else, but if I were to win, I'd sell it. I need the cash more.

Playing it right now, very good detail.
Almost makes me feel bad that its a competition to try and do better than you.. almost. I want that tv.

Yes, I made the Prius. I worked closely with Sony and Toyota to getting looking as close as possible. I'm glad all the little details didn't go unnoticed - I can honestly say that about 10 hours went into the side-on car, just tweaking and perfecting. I don't want to think about how much time went into the other one, given that the controls were very precise (too bad about the reverse controls, lol).

Thanks!

Rather lovely level, great visuals and a nice open-worldish area, overall, I enjoyed the level, the advertising wasn't in yer face enough to actually be bad.
(The Ace prizes were a bit of a surprise, but still, not that big of a deal. ;p)

Very well done Comph, I did find a smal area that lets you fall to the invisible plasmafied barrier outside the level, tho I'll contact you about that later.

Now, on a side note, say I entered the contest and somehow managed to win, do you know what kind of information I'd be asked for (other than the mailing adress of course.) to be able to claim the prizes?
Or would the just mail them to the adress connected to my PSN and that's it?

It's a great level... but this is of a slight concern for me.

Will we be seeing more of these "official" community levels - sponsored by a company to promote their goods - being MM Picked?

I don't want to see LBP2 become a corporate dumping ground for adverts

Pimp my Prius.

Great level by the way. I really enjoyed the driving parts, although I do feel a wee bit uncomfortable with LBP2 used as a marketing tool, but if it gives us levels of this like I suppose I could live with it.

I do like your level a lot. I like how they didn't say "Now go buy a Prius!" at the end.
As for the marketing, I am also concerned. If they make a McDonald's level or a Build-a-Bear level, I'm out.

Meh, don't particularly care about the product placement. Level was great and you get cool stuff to possibly win some even nicer stuff. I'll take that any day over the crap that real in game advertising is half the time. (EA and your inexplicable game commercials and constant phone billboards in racing games)

Great level, really really enjoyed the top down part, even though I killed so, so many innocent squirrels.

I played and I love it, especially the swinging on the windmills.
Only two problems that I found.
1.) Too many prizes. I ended up having to delete a bunch of stuff just to fit it all.
2.) In the top-down part, it seems that the bubbles are glued in place instead of just floating by the anti-gravity tweaker. It causes some resistance when trying to collect them and they redirected me a bit to the side and I crashed into a slug. (-500? Grr!)
Other than that, it was probably the greatest level I have ever played. Good job, comph!

They are indeed, but putting a gravity tweaker on each bubble would dramatically increase the already limit-pushing thermometer. I could connect a set of five of them, but then it would look funny when they started moving as a set. I believe that you only get that resistance effect when playing under laggy conditions, or playing with someone who has a poor connection. Were either of those the case?

Other than that, it was probably the greatest level I have ever played. Good job, comph!

Cheers, mate.

Really cute level. Great attention to detail. Liked the water wheel, jelly falls, and all the critters, especially the birds. The vehicle side-view was spot on. I was a little confused by the top-down section initally because I thought there would be more of an objective...it was still cool. A very laid-back, leisurely romp with your usual excellent craftsmanship.2011-02-05 21:56:00

This level is really cool. Good atmosphere, awesome gameplay, interesting little puzzles, and a great replay value.

I'm only a little disappointed this is actually a community level, rather than a real and official level kit / DLC, and thus makes the Prius a community object. It deserved to be available on the Store, even if I can understand why it wasn't made available this way.

Still, if every promoting level is made with such quality, I'm ready to welcome quite every brand. Nice job on it !

Hell, when I saw the teasers for this I thought the Prius was a custom built model from MM...probably one of the best looking cars in the game. I was a little surprised by the Toyota logo stickers though

I loved the top down part; I hope there are a lot more like that coming...it was genuinely fun. Good job!
