Need for Speed: Undercover - Unlock DLC?

Archive: 4 posts

Anybody check out the recent PSN update's stuff? I scrolled through the New Additions page, and there was a LOT of NFS:U download stuff. They were all add-ons, and they were all purchasable add-ons for various packages. Pay a couple dollars to open up all the cars of each class, for each performance upgrade section, or even exterior packages. But these are just the same things you unlock as you play, not new content.

Granted, this is EA. And this isn't new. (If you remember the Battlefield: Bad Company controversy? There are other examples, as well.) I remember that ever since Underground (and especially underground) in each of the games I'd always end up with wads of cash from playing through the events on harder levels, but was always stuck waiting for the ability to finally unlock that upgrade I'd been wanting for a while. And progression was rather slow.

I'm not saying it's wrong. Because there will always be those people without the time to invest in grinding through events in order to unlock that next upgrade, and they wouldn't mind paying a little extra to circumvent that. And if the devs want them to be able to have that option, more power to 'em. However, there are a lot of them, they can't be very much not cheap (up to ten dollars), and you could pay a significant amount of money to get it all up-front. And so I'm wondering if they'll actually balance it in.

For example, the early part of the game is tailored for the slower cars. In Most Wanted, you "unlocked" various cop heat levels as you progressed, because the cars were slower. And of course, your opponents were, too. But if you bought your way in, you could easily use a vastly superior car to take advantage of the unbalance, and eliminate the instituted challenge. Conversely, there's some fear there that they may intentionally slow down unlock progression, in order to create additional weight for the case of buying the unlocks. And this begins to sound awfully like some of those free-to-play MMOs.

Additional thoughts?

The new Need For Speed looks great, I'll definitely pick it up eventually. (Or, my brother will on the holidays just to get to play it xD More for me anyway)

Anyway, let people have their fun if they can. It'll be like they "Cheat" their way to get a better car by paying. After all, what's more fun than just being first by a mile away?
But I doubt that many would do it.

Well, I'll just play it normally. I like doing stuff the old fashion way.
