CyberStrata (MM Picked!!!)

Archive: 39 posts

Hi central! Im here to show you my newest level CyberStrata !(btw strata means street in latin) Its a survival challenge in a cyber/ hi tech city freeway. You have to dodge red hazards and collect green bars to get a higher score. Also if you get 2 or 3 score bars in one row with in 3 secs of the initial score bar you will get a bonus accordingly (2 bars = 100pts and 3 bars = 200pts). You only get one life so when you crash its over . Inspiration came from messing with highspeed grid movement and messing around trying to make Jet Moto lol. Also got some inspiration from a game called Audiosurf from pc which some of my friends say is similiar to it. I put many sleepless hours into it. I hope you enjoy it as much as i enjoyed making it.

Hi Light! Cool level, I loved the background scenery especially in this level and it was really catchy. It was also really cool when the camera starting rolling to the right and left as the street went faster and faster, I found myself turning my head left and right to try and match it I liked how simple it was beautifully designed it was, I'm definitely going back for seconds, because I love myself some survival challenges.

Good job! Looks like it is having good success so far, the rating system is sooo much better now. Thumbs up and <3 from me

Very cool! I like the Audiosurf inspiration. The style is great, and it's a good concept. I don't like how the speed ramps up... It seems like at one point it goes from medium-fast to quite-fast somewhat suddenly. The ramping up at the beginning seems too slow as well. There's a bit of delay in the vehicle responding to the controls, you should see if you can adjust your logic so the ship responds a little more quickly.

My main concern: You're using red and green as your important colors. A person with red-green colorblindness will basically be completely unable to play this level well.

The concept and execution are really good. Nice job!

Ever come across a game you want to be good at but just cant for some reason? Welcom to my side of the Cyber Strata. Everything here works well and there is oh so much slick polish on this simple yet decievingly hard premise. Nice sense of Depth achieved in this one!2011-02-01 07:33:00

The track speed was made like that on purpose to ease the player into knowing the controls and learning about the bonus feature. Also made the track speed up quickly to keep players on thier toes so thier always alert. Idk what I can do with the color blind situation since its not really under my control what colors others can see. Glad you liked the concept of the level. I could probly use your suggestions for a sequal. Thanks again!

This is the best looking & most polished community level/game so far, right up there with johnee's Blast Radius in looks, interface & play. Such simple arcade fun, but in an ultra high end new school package. You should be proud of this level & it should be an MM pick. Hopefully the fact you don't work for MM doesn't keep it from getting an MM pick.2011-02-01 12:56:00

This mini game of yours is EPIC!

VISUALS:
The city look of this level looked seriously huge. I see a lot of great usages of decorations and materials, and the ship design is brilliant too. Also this level has some great camera angle and the longer you stay, the more it moves.

SOUND:
Great use of sound effects and musics.

GAMEPLAY:
The usage of the controlinator and score giver worked well in this level, and the usage of the L1 and R1 to move the ship side to side is awesome.

OVERALL:
Not only is this level one of the best creative games of LBP2, but it is also your best level ever. A yeah vote, a heart, and a positive review.

I LOVE this level. Perfect survival challenge minigame in every way. The visuals are, well, awesome (I just wish I had time to look at the more!) and the camera tilting really makes it that extra bit cooler and more exciting. No idea what made you add that camera tilt but it's a little things like that which really make this something special. The gameplay is great -difficult but fun, and it gets progressively harder as survivals should. The presentation is very well done too, nice to see so many levels using menus. Most importantly, you've got what I consider tobe the key ingredient of a good minigame/survival - simplicity. No complicated rules or controls, it's clear what you need to do, and it's insanely fun and addictive.

One thing I would suggest is multiple lives. Only die after you hit three red hazards or something. Game over after a single mistake, particularly after you get far into it, it does seem a little bit unfair. But hey, I suppose that encourages more replays (it certainly did for me!).

Idk what I can do with the color blind situation since its not really under my control what colors others can see.

I'm colour blind and the red and green wasn't an issue for me (bright/yellowy green and red do look quite different). The best thing to do is use red and blue, I've never known anyone to get those mixed up.

Yea i read your review on the game lol. I could put in multiple lives but then (knowing me) I would put in a death sequence and an invincible time when you respawn. I also have ideas to make it a competitive multiplayer level that could be fun. Also thanks for the color suggestions. It would be better if I just eventually made a sequal I think

Also thanks everyone for the wonderful comments and for playing

hey L1GHT
first of all i have to thank you that i was allowed to watch you building this masterpiece i just love the idea! one of my favourite things is that you made an moving background not just an illusion the track is moving! and the standing buildings at the side gave me the feeling like im on a huge bridge on an endless way to the.... scoreboard maybe i?m the only one who thought this ??
Ah, yea, congrats for MM pick, i knew when you said it that it will become a MM Pick
keep up the good work, its just great!

Played it. Loved it. The camera angles, the simplistic yet challenging gameplay, the addictive quality, the scenery ... everything was perfect! If I remember correctly, I think this may be the first LBP2 community level that I awarded with a heart. Keep 'em coming - you've made me a fan 2011-02-03 14:25:00

And nobody with diabetes can play The Cakeinator
Nobody that is allergic to rabbits can play Avalon's Armaments Academy

Somebody's giving their feedback way too much thought. You could complain to someone that made a very addictive level that players could suffer from RSI or sleep deprivation because it's so addictive.

Those comparisons are stupid. You don't eat real cakes in Cakeinator and similarly the rabbits are just a bunch of pixels on a TV screen. Nobody gets an allergic reaction just from looking at some digital rabbits.

Colourblindness however is a very overlooked problem in many games that actually does prevent a lot of people from playing them. If red and green look the same and a game relies on the player being able to distinguish between them, you can probably understand that'll be very difficult. I've played many games over the years that have this very problem, and it isn't at all fun when you can't tell what kills you and what gives you points. It's an easy thing to change and certainly not an unreasonable suggestion.

Thank you! My point exactly.

Somewhere between 5 and 10% of males have some sort of color deficiency.

I am not colorblind so I couldn't tell if these shades of red and green would be difficult to distinguish, but since the entire level relies on being able to easily distinguish red and green they should be more accessible colors. The one easy fix is to just use complimentary colors like red and cyan, green and magenta, or blue and yellow. Or use white as the "good" color.

Nice mini game here. Loved the scenery.
I think I would prefer a "three hits" version.

What were your reasons for tilting the camera?
Just to make it more engaging/disorientating?

@ phort

I thought magenta is in the red family XD. Thanks for the imput from you and Nuclearfish. On a sequal ill know what colors to make the hazards/points.

@ Midnight Heist

Thanks Yea I made it tilt to make it look like the track is turning and also to try to distract people with an engaging environment. Usually players (my testers atleast) fall for it on thier 1st go at it lol

YAY! L1ghtmare my level is in the cool pages of this forum! Huzzah! lol

Oh and I suppose I should give a review for you

Cyberstrata:

Gameplay: Excellent
Design: Excellent
Frames per Second: Excellent
Multiplayer: N/A
Overall: Excellent and worthy of a spotlight/ Mm pick/ crown/ hearts/ and plenty of Yaaaay!

Suggestions:
Since this is strongly based off of Audiosurf (or at least it's very very similar lol), you should make it so that when you hit those hazards, you don't die automatically. In audiosurf, you keep playing until you either fill up one of your columns too much (kinda like tetris) or until the song ends.

Since collecting 3 points in a row makes that row/column disappear, than it doesn't fill up. However, collecting hazards should add a block that makes it so you can't complete your 3 in a row combo, and it adds to your column. Keep collecting hazards, and it'll be very hard to complete combos.

It's rather confusing to explain, here's a link to a video of audiosurf that should explain it better lol.

I kept seeing this level in the LBP2 community. When I saw it, I thought it was just a simple racing type game. I decided to play this level and I am glad I did. Very fun level. The combination of a racing/survival challenge made this game different. Visuals and music fit the theme of this game quite well. Visuals were well done. Gameplay was fun. Controls and the flow of the game seem to be smooth with no lag. Well done job.2011-02-05 14:34:00

See thats the thing, I didn't base this from Audiosurf. I have never played it either. The only thing I did take from that game is the point system of ramming into points to get a higher score. Originally I was going to put in an automatic point system and you would just dodge for your life but i thought actually having to get them was better. I have my own ideas for a sequal to make it more engaging but I have other levels to attend to

@ Garak101

Glad you did finally played it. Also happy you enjoyed it too. The no lag/skipping thing was the hardest to control since everything is in a tight area but I some how got it to work. Thanks for playing

You know... I played this about a week ago - had NO idea there was a thread or I would have posted earlier.

The visuals in this one are absolutely gorgeous. You took an absolute basic slot race idea, and put a sci-fi futuristic wrapping around it that's incredible. Congrats on the MM pick - this level has "mass-friendly-highly-addicting" written all over it, and it looks like it will be here for a long time.

You know what would be cool, though (not for this game... but I think you could really pull it off) - a futuristic "Spy Hunter" in the same kind of setting. Steer left and right, shoot lasers at baddies, enemies coming up from behind....

Thanks CCubbage! Glad you liked all the details. I wish you couldve seen an earlier build. The bg was way more detailed than that. Unfortunately the engine couldnt handle it, as it would make a stutter or skip effect every 5 or so secs.

Hmm I havent played Spy hunter. Ill check it out. I have other ideas for a sequal and if that can fit in I can make a big hybrid game

Also I have an update:
- The green bars are changed to blue now so the game is more accessable to our colorblind players.
- Added more sound effects but the most notable is that there is now a sound when press O in a sub menu (leaderboards & controls) when going back to the main menu.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and comments. Very much appreciated.

Like Cuz I actually played this a while back and left an in-game review but I had no idea a thread existed lol. I thought the level was really great and the perfect example of taking something very simple and turning it into an amazing experience. There is a sort of "less is more" approach that I really appreciated, I think creators sometimes get caught up in adding adding adding to the point where everything just gets really cluttered.

I absolutely loved your use of decorations, must have taken quite a long time to place all of them lol. Overall I really enjoyed the level and gave it a smiley/heart
