emitters on a grid

Archive: 4 posts

let's say I have a 3x3 grid, and I want to be able to emit an object into that square. now I know I can just put an emitter on each of the grid squares and be done with it. I would prefer to be able to use a single emitter to put one on any square based on my selection.

with a small grid and a single object it's fine, but suppose I want to be able to emit two different objects depending on conditions. let's say I want my grid to be 5x5. That's 50 emitters to deal with. if I decide to change the object, that's 25 emitters i have to change. This just seems horribly inefficient in terms of both thermo and ability to work on it.

If I use a piece of moving material to hold the emitters I need it to be able to snap to the grid squares so that I'm not emitting objects that are off line, or overlapping squares.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Make a grid of tags, activate the one you want your emitter to be at, and put a tag follower on the emitter.2011-01-31 22:43:00

Perfect! that works exactly like I wanted. Much better than the convoluted mess I was coming up with.

If you were here right now I could kis....ok I wouldn't do that, but I would certainly shake your hand and thank you heartily.

Even though adding tags seems like a huge hassle, this actually simplifies what I am doing a great deal because now I don't need a lot of the logic I was working into it
