Speech Text: Why...

Why is it so limited? I was creating the level in the back of the Bradygames Guide and I only was able to put in one of the two sentances. What gives???2008-11-13 20:08:00

Do you mean the magic mouths???
If so then yeah it is a bit annoying that they can't be longer and sometimes you have to use a couple to get the message across. Which is annoying to the creator and the player

Sometimes I rack my brain and just can't think of a reason why some limits are put into certain things. Especially on console games. Look how long it took consoles to get a game like LBP when PC's have been including map and game editors for decades.2008-11-13 20:59:00

it is just that they are not powerful enough until now to use realistic physics engines. like sponge is supposed to act the way sponge does or a soccor ball or something like that, they have not been powerful enough to do it until the PS3 came along but the creators can most likely change the magic mouth thing pretty easily so do not fret they can do that in an update

I'm not necessarily talking about a physics engine... there were plenty of games that could have just had level editors before this. Excitebike pulled it off a few decades ago!

Also I think the lack of coloured text is slightly disappointing... I mean its in the story why not let us do it?2008-11-17 00:48:00

yes but it was not as dynamic as this game due to the physics engine and that is what made it way more complex than that level editor but in that editor did it give you real tools... not really, they did not give you the tools the developers used and you could not create something from scratch and the power needed to do this was not there until now and now it is there and it is absolutly awesome, am i right? so yes other games could have had it but it would have taken up too much space, plus it would not be very dynamic and not have really good choices when it came to it.

so LBP is the very first of its kind and it came out just as it was possible

Cheers!

I think I remember that the text feature was added in hastily after the E3 PowerPoint level, or something like that. They probably just didn't see the importance that magic mouths may have been. More focus on platforming. Also, why the dinky little phone keypad to type with? No idea. But MM is working on expanding the game over time, adding features they couldn't and improving on stuff they don't quite like how it turned out. Called a patch.

It's also rumored that they may be improving the magic mouth ability sometime soon, but that may just be a baseless rumor.

And keep it on topic, guys.

You know that one level made from a user and it is where you have this ship and you shoot stuff like in the old video games, that has a pretty long text if you know which level I am talking about2008-11-18 05:07:00

Personally I think the restrictions with the Magic Mouth is a design decision; one which I support fully. I admit it could allow for a little more text, but I personally am happy that we aren't attacked by novells of 3000 words or more.

But hey, I'm just guessing here. It could just aswell be some silly technical restriction caused by it not being in the original design of the tech.
