mind-bending horror

I'm currently working on a horror project with the goal of actually scaring the player. This is no easy task considering Sackboy is as cuddly as they come. I'm attempting to achieve this by messing with the player's head. What I've got so far... You wake up in rickety old house. It's dark, and to make things worse, you hear something downstairs. The camera pans down to give you a glimpse of the creature, but it's too dark to get a good look. It's time to escape. You navigate around the old house, trying to find a way out. Going downstairs isn't an option since the beast is roaming around. You find a cobweb-covered vent that leads you to a small boiler room. This room has a small window that must be smashed in order to jump out. You're free.. or at least you thought. The smash has alerted the beast who is now standing on the front porch of the house, staring you down. He begins to chase you.. you run. Up ahead lies a cliff--The beast is drawing closer. You can either jump off or succumb to facing the beast, either way surely means your death. The screen goes black... You wake up in a rickety old house.. again. Huh, was that a dream? This is what I've designed so far and it works pretty good for the most part. My idea is to have the player stuck in this purgatorial state of death and sleep, each time changing something about the way the dream plays out until the ultimate climax which I will save for now... What Do you guys think?? I'll keep you posted on the progress. I'm excited to have people play it. | 2011-01-31 17:05:00 Author: automatica Posts: 33 |
Yours Story is very good, but I think it will be better if you change the monster into a crazy people , or a serial killer, because it will attract more attention to the story. And unless you work hard the story can be repetitive. | 2011-01-31 18:52:00 Author: Tricko- Posts: 2 |

I have some interesting ideas on how to change the dream up just enough. They range from the house being up in flames, under water or floating in the abyss--The death sequences will also change. Every time the player wakes up, they will be more disoriented and a little more insane. The visions will increase and the camera effects will become more intense. | 2011-01-31 19:21:00 Author: automatica Posts: 33 |

Horror tends to be far more effective if you use the player's own imagination against them. If you manage to make it obvious that something is there but never actually show the creature, the players imagination will fill in the gaps, often thinking of possibilities much worse than you could show them. Atmosphere and lighting are extremely important, and when I say lighting I don't just mean making it dark. You seem to be off to a pretty good start though and I wish you luck. | 2011-02-01 00:29:00 Author: Unknown User |
Think of what your favourite horror movies did correctly. Mines probobly the Blare Witch Project.... And the reason I like it so much is because nothing actually happens. The pure state of fear in the character can transfer straight out of the screen, and into the veiwers mind. The idea behind the movie is that theres isolation, and so much suspense that it completely kills all of the hope and comfort stored in your mind, and disturbs your thoughts, which fills those spots where comfort and hope come from, infecting your mind with nothing but empty thoughts. This leads to conclusions about what may happen swimming in your head. Use the techniques from professionals... And maybe youll actually be able to scare people, even with a cute mascot! | 2011-02-01 01:06:00 Author: grayspence Posts: 1990 |
I think if you start it with that, then wake up in an old colonial wagon going toward the actual house and it has some cheesy music playing. It was a dream until you arrive to the house and it is the same thing but much more drawn out until the climax. By cheesy music I mean the old "slowly panning out and looking at a haunted mansion overlooking a large cliff" music that is used oh so often in todays cinematic world. Your concept is really great, I hope you pull this off because it will be a joy to play. Edit: Haha it occurs to me that joy is the wrong word. | 2011-02-01 01:41:00 Author: BassDeluxe Posts: 984 |

The idea behind the creature is not really to ever show the player, but instead imply that it's looming in the darkness. Even the one part of the level where the creature makes an appearance, it's too dark to really tell what it is. The game goes black when he gets near you, waking you up.. provided you havent already jumped off the cliff. I'm using more sound and camera effects in this one level than I ever have before. I'm nearly done the second sequence. It should be up soon. | 2011-02-01 01:45:00 Author: automatica Posts: 33 |

want my advice, use this as a guideline (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=33729-tips-on-how-to-make-a-decent-horror-level&highlight=make+decent) Thanks for the tip. Most of these elements are definitely in play already. There are certain parts that still freak me out a bit when I'm testing them so I can't wait for you guys to play it. | 2011-02-01 04:12:00 Author: automatica Posts: 33 |
It's pretty much been said already but horror is just the player's suspense and his or her lack of knowledge about what is actually happening. I'm sorry for being redundant and hope to play your level real soon. | 2011-02-01 06:44:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |
Progress Report: The game is nearly complete. I'm currently working on cleaning up the cutscenes and adding some polish to the overall experience. I'm hoping to publish it tomorrow, but if not, then Saturday at the latest. | 2011-02-04 05:26:00 Author: automatica Posts: 33 |

Actually leaving the image of the monster up to the players imagination is a far better idea. Your greatest fears are your own... (Don't steal that, it's my tag ) EDIT: BTW, if anyone already gave this advice (as it seems obvious to me), my apologies. I didn't read through all the comments, since I am kind of multitasking at the moment. | 2011-02-05 02:45:00 Author: Unknown User |
The level is now live! It's titled, "They came from my nightmares" Enjoy! | 2011-02-05 19:26:00 Author: automatica Posts: 33 |
