Carrying data through level links

Archive: 8 posts

Ive heard people talking about this but i never heard of any tutorials or anything being released.
I tried to come up with a system on my own and it almost works with one small problem.
For some reason when entering the sublevel the player's score instantly doubles.
The only things in the level that can give score are all grab activated or player sensor activated have no way of activating on their own.

I have it set up now so that at the end of the first level it detects certain score threshold and resets the players score to the last threshold they crossed. (in case they died) This part works perfectly.
Also, the emitters that i have set up to emit my power ups work in the first level, triggered by gaining points in that level, but they do not seem to trigger at the start of the sublevel... though this might just be because of the issue with the score doubling.

If anyone has any useful information or suggestions i would be greatly appreciative.

The score doubling issue should be fixable by simply removing the score giver at the start of level part 2, as when you travel through a level link score stays persistent. (You may have noticed this in the story levels).

How exactly are the power up emitters in the 2nd part wired up?

well, theres nothing at the beginning of the levels that should be giving any score... the score is given at the end of part 1. The power ups are hooked up to score sensors that will trigger if they have a certain score but not 10 above that score (as close as itll let me get unfortunately.)
The power ups stations in the first level work just as i had hoped, responding to the score at the different thresholds i have set, but in the sublevel everything is wonky...
The sublevel and the first level are pretty much exact copies of each other in this experiment.

thanks for the help!

If the levels are close to exact copies of each other, then I'd recommend deleting the 2nd and cloning the 1st again, to see if that solves the problem.

In the time between the end of 1st level score emitter, and the player activating the level link, is the score value correct?

The score is correct when activating the level link. You can actually see the score popping up over sackboys head when it doubles upon coming out of the entrance of the sublevel. It basically just gives him however many points he already has.

Also i have it set up so the devices that give points do not emit if the player already has that many or more points...which does work, but its functionality wouldnt be effected by the score doubling, other than making the higher point givers not emit because the level thinks the score is higher than it should be.

Sounds like you might have a stray score giver hidden behind the 2nd level entrance, otherwise I've no idea how the level entrance itself could be giving you points. Check the level settings to see if anything is obviously amiss (sub-level ticked, etc) that could be inadvertently causing bugs2011-01-30 19:29:00

i dont think i have any extra score givers laying about... the level itself is little more than a few bits of dark matter.2011-01-30 22:44:00

ok ive tried a few more times (double checking for any extra logic that might be laying around)
I can actually see the score pop up over the area where it was earned in the previous level.
There isnt anything there. (the emitter didnt go off because it detected that i already had that many points.)
the points just pop up in the air and doubles my score.
I'm going to try again using two levels that arent copies of each other and see if i get any results.
In the meantime any more info would be helpful,
specifically from rtm223 or upsilandre since ive been told both have mastered this tech already.
