Gameplay lag on my level

Archive: 12 posts

So I posted my level on the Showcase forum and I keep getting told my level has lag, but when I play it I don't experience any. Does anybody know why this could be? And I swear this isn't just a ploy to get more people to play my level, but if you want to find out exactly what is going on my link is in my signature.

If you do decide to check it out, this is the area I believe people are having issues.

I queue'd it and will tell you if it lags for me
I'll try to find out why it does so, too.

Generally it's too much stuff moving in a level at once. Especially if you are moving very LARGE things around. It's fixable by making your level modular and emitting pieces it as you go as well as destroying it behind you. Obviously not all levels can be made this way, but it's a fix.2011-01-30 17:42:00

So maybe just before they get to that point, I should destroy any large moving parts behind it? I might give that a go, but I still don't get why others get lag but I don't :S2011-01-30 17:47:00

You don't get lag because it's your level and it's on your PS3.2011-01-30 17:49:00

Okay so I added a destroyer, which removes the first half of the level before the player reaches the problematic area but apparently there's still lag. RSQViper, what do you mean by making it "modular"? Do you mean use microchips instead of having my sensors all over the place? I can't do the emitter thing now, it's kinda too late for that2011-01-31 13:49:00

By modular I mean you emit the level in parts and destroy it as you pass. But if that isn't possible, I'm not sure what else you can do.2011-01-31 14:51:00

Okay, uh, I played it (and noticed the lag in the part you mentioned)
I don't really know what could've caused that to happen... maybe it's the fog machine things?
I think they make the game a bit laggy :o Maybe try that?
Apart from that and the idea by RSQViper, I don't know what else you can do about this.
Good luck

Okay thanks for trying iArekusu, but there isn't actually any fog at that part, I think it's just the lighting that makes it look like that. And RSQViper, yeah I think it's too late for that now. I guess I have to learn from my mistake and make sure I keep it in mind for my next level. Although I imagine emitting stuff as I go being kinda difficult to test the level as I create it. Guess I'll have to manage though. Thanks for the tips guys 2011-01-31 14:57:00

Ok, here's another idea. Make it so all the moving parts only move when they need to. Like, only move if the player is in range. Same thing with any emitters you have going off. if they don't need to be going off, don't have them going off. Have them player-sensed so they only go off while the players are in range. These changes may help a lot. Oh, do this for your smoke emitters, too.2011-01-31 15:51:00

That's a pretty good idea, I'll give that a go. As I can't see the lag myself it's pretty hard to judge if it's fixed but I'll definitely give that a try. Thanks again.2011-01-31 15:56:00
