The Mysterious Mines of Misfortune 2 (with youtube video)

Archive: 14 posts

Hey everyone, I would like to tell you that my last lbp1 level is now published and it is also completely playable in LBP2 as well!

If you never played the first one it really does not matter and it got moderated for some reason and I was never told why. However, this level is the successor to my previous spotlighted level called The Unknown Depths of the Cavernous Catacombs and picks up where that story left off.

Detective Sack ventures deep into the mines to hunt for any clues or traces of the secret society known as the Dark Tri United, who is responsible for many attempts of world takeovers. Its up to you to investigate and put a stop to any of their future plans.

There are more hidden point bubbles in this one than there are visible ones so if you get a low score it might be due to missing the hidden ones. The original boss fight was scrapped and replaced and I have had some say the boss fight was too easy and some say it was too hard. All I can say is that patience will ensure you a better fight at the end.
I hope you enjoy it and any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated. Just remember that it is an LBP1 level, completely made with LBP1 tools but it will still all work in LBP2. Here is the lbp.me link and some pictures:

I recorded this level for the creator and have been asked to make sure that it gets added to this thread. Here it is for any who'd like to see it.

Cheers.

Thanks Trindall for adding the video. I have noticed a huge explosion in the amount of levels that have been advertised here in the last couple of days. I assure you that you will enjoy this level. It is playable and completable in lbp2 as well. The only issue I have noticed but have not been able to fix just yet is that when playing it in lbp2, the lighting in some areas is skewed and somewhat bright but it does not take away from the level. If you are in doubt then check out the video. I would greatly appreciate some feedback. The success of the level has been minimal but all the people who played it in lbp2 have smiley faced it except for 1 and the current heart to plays ratio is about 1 to 5. Thanks and please check it out, and keep in mind that it was made entirely in lbp1.2011-02-01 03:45:00

+ Spikes on jetpack section.
+ Flipping moving platform.
- Infinite boss laughter.
- No warning on fireballs. A light that lights up before they emit would help.
- If sackboy gets singed by the boss' fireballs, he auto switching to the checkpoint layer. Which then means the player has to manually switch down again. Could get a little annoying.
- Perhaps a magic mouth cue pointing to the platform after the boss is defeated?
You did it on all the others, why not this one?
+ All enterly aceable on the first attempt. That's what I like to see.

Visuals nice as usual. Nice to see you tie in the story from your other levels.
I think this would be the first one of your levels I would have 5 starred. Shame I'm in LBP2 and all you get it a smily face.
Good work.

This was a pretty well made platformer. I liked the use of background mechanics in parts. However I found the visuals to be a little bland... But then again that may be the kind of dreary look you were aiming for in this atmosphere. Overall. Great job fun level I liked it.2011-02-02 20:27:00

@midnight, thanks for the feedback and the 5 stars...errr i mean smiley. I fixed some of the lighting issues but not all because some issues are not showing up in create mode. I also fixed the boss laughter so that it is random and I also added an LED to each of the arms that lights up when the fire starts to come out. I also added a sound effect that starts when the fire starts.

@ocamposmoon, thanks dude, I saw that you have played in on lbp.me. would love to hear your thoughts or suggestions. I did play your level that you suggested but it was a while back. I think it was the level that got spotlighted and was a homage to rio_lotta?? Great level btw.

@lockstitch, thanks for the feedback. Most have said the visuals were good, some have said it was the best visuals they have seen from me. I can see your point of view though too about them being bland, I think it is due to minimal material choices, but I used a ton of stickers and hidden lighting to try and liven it up a bit, but yes I was going for the dreary look too. Thanks again.

Any other feedback from anyone else would be great. Please keep in mind that this entire level was made in LBP1 otherwise I would have defenitely used sackbots, lbp2 stickers and decor, etc, etc. I might eventually update the level with lbp2 stuff but for now I will be busy completing the story and watching all the tutorials. Then I will get to cracking on my first official lbp2 level, which I have no idea what it will be...though I have about 4 different ideas.

Every level you make seems to be better then the last, and this one is no different. It is insane how good this one is, the best visuals I've seen in your levels, the gameplay was awesome and worked without a glitch or bug in LBP2 (which seems to be unusual for well built LBP1 levels). It was just stunning.

Can't wait to see what make in LBP2!

This was such a good level to play. It's definitely my favourite of your levels so far. It had just the right combination of fun, challenge and good visuals.

The gameplay was excellent. It had plenty of variety and different levels of challenge in it. The spinning wheels with the spikes and fire were great and the moving platforms section too. I liked how you introduced some puzzle/strategy elements as well to break up the platforming. Finding the secret bubbles was a fun too, though looking at the top scores, I obviously missed some somewhere.

I can see what Lockstitch is saying about the visuals but I enjoyed all the attention to detail and had assumed the "earthiness" was intentional. It just seemed to fit somehow.

Overall, the level was just a whole load of fun to play! and a heart from me.

@sackracer, thanks for the feedback. I hope to be able to keep making new levels that are better than the ones before. I am currently knocking around a few ideas for my first lbp2 level.

@shropshirelass, thanks as well for the feedback and taking the time to check out my level. I am really glad you liked it. It has gotten very little plays so far but a lot of people have enjoyed it. I never could get it to show up on the lbp1 cool levels pages past page 20 so it never got played hardly at all. Hopefully I can update the level with some of the new lbp2 stuff I have been collecting. The thermo seems to be in good enough shape. Your favorite level of mine?? Thanks. Hopefully my next endeavor will not disappoint either. Oh, btw, there are probably more hidden bubbles in the level than visible ones. I suggest searching every nook and cranny to find all of them and there are some really good bubble combos you can string together if you plan it out right.

Anyone who has not checked the level out please don't hesitate to do so. It is some of the best work I have done. Check the video if you like to get a preview.

I played this earlier in LBP2 and it was great fun. It's definitely one of the better new levels I've played recently. I wouldn't have known it was made entirely in LBP1 if you hadn't said, as everything worked perfectly and you had some very smooth mechanisms in there. Not once while playing did I even consider it might be an LBP1 level so credit to you there for pulling that off.

I loved the design, it was perfect in my opinion. The difficulty level throughout the level and with the boss fight was spot on for me too. It was tricky without being overly difficult and that made it lots of fun. I even liked exploring for hidden bubbles which I never usually do, and maybe that's down to the difficulty being just right too. It meant I didn't feel a sense of frustration while playing and therefore enjoyed taking the time to explore.

Overall it was a great, good looking, fun level and I wish there were a lot more levels of this calibre around. Good job.

Very good platforming level.

VISUALS:
You used the corner edit too effectively, and the steampunk visuals looked great too. I think you should replace the cut out sackboys with the sackbots that matches the costumes (If thermo is 99.99% full, that can be ignored.)

SOUND:
Great musics from Marvel Level Kit made this level more epic.

GAMEPLAY:
This level has unique platforming obstacles and amazing boss battle. The level has great usage or the LBP1 tools too.

OVERALL:
This level is epic. A yeah vote and a heart. Same goes with your other steampunk level, "The Unknown Depths of the Cavernous Catacombs".

Hey Justinart, thanks for taking time to play my levels and give some feedback. The thermo is at around 75% which is pretty unbelievable and I didn't use the thermo glitch. Not sure how I used the corner editor too effectively but I did use it a lot. Just about every piece of the "build" of the level started as a small square that I corner edited into much larger pieces. I am convinced it saves thermo like crazy. used the same trick for catacombs too. It is time consuming but worth it in the end and gives it a better look and depth. Hopefully I will be adding in the sackbots soon but just for the cutscenes. Not planning on making any other changes other than aesthetics. The only thing in the level right now that is lbp2 is the smoke machines (love those). Anyway, thanks again dude.

I am still open for any feedback and suggestions. Thanks.
