A post limit before posting a new thread in the Level/Creation showcase.

Archive: 17 posts

Pretty self explanatory. I think that the user must have a certain amount of posts (10 to 20 sounds good) before being able to post a new thread in the Level Showcase and Creation Showcase part of the forums.

This is because you may find that some people will sign up once.... post their level and just leave for good. Having this restriction means people will put more contribution into LBPC than just posting a level and never returning. It may encourage them to stay on too, as they've got a few posts by that point.

I know some may say this may mean more spam with people just trying to rack up posts... but i'd like to see whether the advantages out-weigh the disadvantages. I've seen other forums use such systems and it works well in my opinion.

What do you guys think?

Also maybe posting a pic should perhaps be obligatory.2008-11-13 01:53:00

I was thinking about this.... but then it's unfair on people without cameras. It's rare someone doesn't have one these days, but i'm sure people exist who aren't into digital cameras.

make it so

don't make it so. pictures don't really tell you too much about a level unless they have truly incredible art design as one of the draws (like the silhouette levels). we've all spent hours and hours and hours on our levels and i'm sure we can talk endlessly about them.

Nice to see a few positives on this so far. I wonder what lbp/cartman will think.2008-11-13 12:43:00

I'm somewhat on the fence about this.

On the one hand, I'm not convinced that people coming here only to promote their levels is such a bad thing. After all, there are levels we may miss out on in the long run.
Additionaly, I'm not sure it's such a widespread practice as of now to need draconian measures against.

I also believe it would be a double-edged sword. It looks nice on paper, as no one would be allowed to make their first post promoting a level in the Level Showcase, but in the end nothing would stop them from promoting their level off-topic in any of the other sub-forums. This would create a lot of work for the moderators and spam in those sub-forums.

If the idea is to promote community interaction, I believe there are better ways to go about it than trying to strongarm visitors into participating. In the end, if they want to participate they will, if they don't they won't.

I've definatly thought about this.
But i've recently noticed that the Level Showcase forum is getting the most new threads, mainly from unknown users. While i'm not comlaining about this... as this means potentially more great levels coming through (though could also mean more bad levels), i'd prefer to go on levels made by 'friends of the forum'. I also prefer to go on levels made by friends who i know in person (though none of my mates have LBP yet let alone a PS3 with most). With new threads appearing fast, it can just seem a bit cluttered almost.
Though, my opinion may be like this because i only get to play the game weekends... so i'm rather selective in the levels i play online.

What Gilgamesh is saying is true. A lot of the new members who join and post, just make new threads to showcase their levels, and never come back.
This idea could make some people actually stay; While it could also drive others away.
It's a good idea. But I'm mostly neutral on this.

And also, I think 20 posts would be enough.

Hmmm... i think a 5 to 10 posts limit would be better actually. 20 posts is quite a few when it comes down to it.

I can understand the feeling about the Level Showcase becoming cluttered. I haven't gotten around to playing many levels from the showcase because when I'm not creating, I play the Story Levels with my gf.

Once Story mode is done though, I intend to thoroughly go through every level posted here, but that also means I'm seeing the page count going higher and higher.

Perhaps we simply need a better way to organize them? A way to "trim out the fat" as it were by putting in more thorough search options, such as the author's participation level and such? Just an idea.

indeed. I thinks it's down to what everybody would prefer and obviously what lbp and cartman think.

Maybe it could just be mentioned that signing up just to show off your levels and leave is frowned upon, but have no restriction. I can see why both sides seem like good choices, so why not go with the middle? If there's any restriction at all, it should be very small.

Actually, if there's a way to block things until someone has been a member long enough, just setting a time limit before one is able to post there might work.

Based on what I've seen in the past, this is a great way to foster spam posts that don't really contribute. People will post 5-10 times with little quips that aren't really involved in the topic at hand. If we crank it up higher, we'll definitely turn away people who planned on posting once and leaving. The problem is, what if one of those people were fantastic at level creation? We would be turning away members who would have otherwise contributed to the forum in a positive way. Honestly, I think it would do more harm than good. This way, at least, new members who thought they were going to post and leave, actually get to see what our community is like through their topic in the Showcases. Our community is a big selling point to new users, and I don't think requiring someone to make 10 posts will really do anything for someone who's initial intent is to join, post, and leave.

A time limit isn't really an option, either, as there's no way to pull that off without an addon, and no addon exists that would accomplish it.
