Steampunk Plaza - Art Concept (UPDATE HERE!)

Archive: 20 posts

Good morning, afternoon, evening or early morning to you!

This is just a quick concept I rattled off, based upon the 'Steampunk' genre of design. I focused more on decorating the heck out of it, so gameplay is a little on the short side...actually, it's more a buzz cut, than anything. But alas, I hope you like it anyway. The sounds, the steam, the textures and those mysterious little Steambots in the background, will be sure to grab your attention and indulge your senses. Except for taste...Sony don't like it when you lick their hardware - ahem, enjoy!

Heres some pictures, if you like

UPDATE: I've added a different soundtrack, lighting, more gameplay and a story. Now, tell me how you liek it.

I just played this level. The interior looked pretty cool, but you could really use some lights. Try placing some lights and messing around with the colours. You'd be surprised at how much better this makes it look . Did you know that in LBP2, there is a new kind of light source that you can make invisible? They are called Lightboxes, and you can set them to "Invisible in Play Mode". You can get them in Avalonia.

The level was pretty steampunk-ish, but the elevator had led lights - the whole point of Steampunk is a world where technology runs on steam, not electricity - so this doesn't really fit in the steampunk theme.

For the F4F, would you be so kind as to review Sack Laser Deathmatch? https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=44664-Sack-Laser-Deathmatch-Small-Arena-%28Not-your-ordinary-deathmatch%29-PICTURES

Added to queue.. Ill go play now... could you check out "Cows are bored of being abducted!" Link in sig to lbp.me page and lbpcentral page please...

EDIT: I have now played the level! I found the style really pleasing but mabie you could have sackbots doing jobs rather than just walking around. The art was lovely but it does need more gameplay. The art +more gameplay = on cool level pages! At some points I find that the light is too dark and the lift has and odd camera but other than that it is a perfect level!

Please F4F my level Cows are bored of being abducted!" link in sig!

Thanks so much for the feedback guys so update 1.2 will include:
-More Lighting, via Lightboxes gained from Avalonia. Will also reduce the darkness setting by a notch or two.
-Cut the elevator lights.
- Have the sackbots doing jobs, maybe have some open up doors for you, or activate appliances.
- More gameplay!

I will update soon, so keep an eye out

M'kay, queued it and will hop on in a few hours or so. Expect feedback (:

EDIT: M'kay, I've played it and have lots and lots of things to say.

Thing 1) It's way too short, unless it's meant to be just a concept, in which case there's not enough variety.
Thing 2) You should probably add some lighting effects (I'm sure someone else mentioned this already, but oh well). It would just make it seem more eerie and "rich".
Thing 3) The actual gameplay was pretty poor, it was an obvious "I have an awesome art style and will spend lots of time on it, let's just throw in some lifts and gaps to keep people entertained"

This being said, I did enjoy it and left a "yay". I just love to nitpick, makes me feel big.

Thanks heaps for the feedback Jonny, it's a concept, but yeah...

"I have an awesome art style and will spend lots of time on it, let's just throw in some lifts and gaps to keep people entertained"
That actually hit the nail on the head. Twas more an artistic level, but I'll add more gameplay, lights, a little story and generally more to keep the players interested, while keeping true to the above quote without the frownie side to it. But thanks for your review I left feedback on your level as well it was pretty awesome!

This is a little late - I forgot to post it earlier, and I'm referring to the original until I find time to play the update, but I figure I'll give you some feedback anyway. The overall visual style was very cool, but I felt you could maybe have used more brick and wood for better contrast. There were few sound effects, which left something of an empty feel, but the sackbots had a unique design which I though was fantastic. As was mentioned the LED's seemed out of place, but I think some of the antique light bulbs would fit in pretty well - however, I believe you've addressed this already. Overall, I gave the level a positive rating, but not quite a heart.2011-02-04 17:48:00

Awesome visual style here Fennox!

A couple of suggestions though, you still need more light! Just put some small spotlights shining on progression points like buttons and such, it will make a hell of a difference! I really loved that film noir like venetian blind lighting on the lift though - i would love to see you use more of that style of lighting in your levels!

I also found that the cog sections (where you have to cross them) was a big issue, half the time my sack boy would just fall straight through the material.

However, it looks fantastic! With a little more light it will be very very moody and atmospheric.

Look forward to seeing even more of your levels! So im going to heart you as well as the level

Thanks for the feedback! I've done a quick update, which addressed the issues that Steve found with the cogs and progression lighting. I also added in a few extra visuals, as well as using antique lightbulbs, like Cpt_Sainsburys suggested. I may or may not make another Steampunk-esque level, but it'll feature more diversity in textures. That venetian blind effect was rather unintentional, but I'm glad you liked it Steve! 2011-02-05 00:53:00
