A Thief Is Among Us - Please help.

Archive: 40 posts

Dear LBPC Community,

I am really in dire need of your help. Something very terrible has happened and I'd like to try to get to the bottom of it.

Someone has hacked into both of my PSN accounts and have changed my passwords. I've rectified the situation, but I am deeply upset about this. I am a member of the community who tries not to step on anyone's toes, and I try to stay to myself for the most part. I've never done a thing to hurt anyone, and if I have, I'm terribly sorry. I am just a normal person who wants to not have to deal with this kind of stuff.

I don't think the person got any of my credit card information, I don't even know how far they got before they stopped... but to get into my account, they had to know my email address and the answer to my security question. this person somehow knew both.

If anyone sees any copies of my levels floating around, please notify me immediately. I will have to take action if I have found that someone has stolen my work. I also will most likely never put a level out for the community ever again if this is the case.

I like all of you, and I thought you guys liked me. I am baffled as to why this has occurred. This is the second time I've had something stolen from me (the first time being in the beta) and I've about had it with all of this awfulness.

If anyone has any information regarding this, please send me a private message. And if you are the one who did this, and I find you HAVE stolen something from me, I'm sorry, but I'll have to report you, because what you've done is a form of identity theft.

That's terrible news. I don't understand why someone would do that. I'll keep an eye out for any copies of your levels. 2011-01-30 00:05:00

That is really awful. I mean, stealing from other members of the community is bad enough, but to do something like that to somebody as well-respected as you... I don't understand it. I'll be sure sure to keep a lookout for copies of your levels.2011-01-30 00:12:00

Oh my goodness no! That's awful! I really hope this was someone being a jerk for the lulz, rather than a deliberate attack at your account.2011-01-30 00:19:00

Well, it was both of my accounts. Even my secret one. It was someone who knows me and knows things about me, and that's the most upsetting thing. I don't bother anyone. Why in the world would someone do this to me ?2011-01-30 00:20:00

Someone could probably conceivably look up a lot of information about you without you knowing it. Visitor messages, forum posts, etc all say a lot, but this does sound rather deliberate. Best of luck to you in figuring out the real culprit.

Have you talked to Fox Kitsune yet? He might still be after your crown!

I was gonna make a joke about TF2, but I wouldn't want you to get mad at me.

So I will just wish you the best of luck in getting your account back!
(also, do you happen to have any enemies on PSN/here/etc? Because maybe that is why you got hacked.)

I hope you find out who did it
I'll keep an eye out for copies of your levels floating about!

Edit: It's pretty strange that they knew you enough to know your question and just changed your passwords, maybe it's someone you know trying to mess with you by changing your passwords? It sounds stupid but my friends do it to each other sometimes, without actually stealing each others personal stuff like credit card info. Be on the look out for any friends with tendencies for cruel jokes.

That's terrible! Frankly, I am very impressed that your OP isn't filled with hate and swearing, as mine probably would be, but I suppose you aren't that sort of person.

I think that there are 2 possibilities for the identity of the culprit.

A hacker, or someone you know.

I'm not sure if anyone other than that could know all of the information required.

My passwords reset before because of some glitch on PSN. I just had to go in and change them, but I thought someone had hacked me at first. Not saying that's what happened but if changed passwords is all that happened...it could just be that.2011-01-30 01:21:00

I hope this matter sorts itself out soon without any serious repercussions.

There was a huge outbreak of hackers on a bunch of popular FPS games for a little while, maybe someone (or something!) got to it right before the update?

Im really sorry this happened to you of all people.. Why would anyone do this to yu of all people? I hope this gets fixed soon!

And Jaeyden, thanks for what you said. It makes me feel better that there's a possibility that this might be what's happened.

I lost my temper terribly when it first happened. I have an extremely explosive temper. I waited until I calmed down to post this.

I try to be very nice to people, but if there's one thing I can't stand, it's when someone steals something from me. I had something stolen from me in both the online create beta and the lbp2 beta. If I find out that someone has taken my levels that I've worked hard on, I'm not going to be a very happy camper, and that's putting it nicely.

I'm going to go with it being an accidental bug that reset your password... you're far too nice a person and upstanding member of the community for someone to do this to you out of malice. If I find out who it is... I'll give them a good "wall talk" that they won't soon forget, make them apologize formally to you in front of the whole community, and make them bake you fresh muffins for the next year!2011-01-30 04:05:00

Kappax, is it even possible that someone knows about your secret question? There must not be much people knowing it right? therefore it could be easy to find who's the joker. Anyhow, I am more inclined about the whole thing being a bug.

And for people in the know out there...
Would it be possible to get our PS3 "packet sniffed" ??

That's Cold! Who would steal that? There are options of doing a password reset online on your browser. Or even contacting playstation about it.
Anyways, Whoever did that is messed up. There's been a hacking outbreak on PSN everywhere. I'm still baffled how people found a way to put God-Glitched items in LBP2.
(I'm not gonna say any names..Yet nobody listened to me when I did )

I've heard people are stealing accounts everywhere. If someone who hacked your account : It's certainly either someone who knows you, is on LBPC, or on your very friends list.

It's probably just a bug, and I hope it is. Still, check into it. Ask anybody that knew about both accounts and knew you well enough to guess the answers to the questions.2011-01-30 07:19:00

I'll be sure to try to take whoever may be doing this to justice!

I mean sure what if it's a glitch or something? idk. But if there's a hacker (or a whole hacking NETWORK) on the loose, that's just theft and piracy and stuff!

Dang people are being total butz around PSN! Be glad they dunno where your mother is :o

That is absolutely horrible! Are you completely certain that none of details have been leaked? Have you contacted your bank about your credit card information, and whether anyone else has been using it? If so, I really hope you find who did this. They could probably be banned from PSN for it.2011-01-30 07:51:00

Also, don't wory about Credit Card info, you have to manually place the credit card number to activate it in each account, activating a PSN account on a different PS3 now asks to either verify the credit card number, or it de-synch from that PSN and you'll have to r-activate it later, so there's no way another person can use your credit card if they didn't know the number already or if you re-synched it to the account after the PSN is saved to their acc.

So unless they already knew the CC, or they had their acc synched to yours and you re-synched the CC number, then rest assured they most likely don't have any info of the sort.

Actually, you could check with your Credit Card company perhaps, if possible?
I'm not sure how this deal with CCs work since I don't own one, but maybe there's some info on it to know if its still synched or not?
Because if it is, it may just be a bug, as Jay said.
(Which may most likely be, considering it was all of your accs, not just one.)

Anywho, I'll keep on the look out, and try to help as much as I can.

xKapax, could it be that someone in your home played with your account? have you got any younger familly members living with you?
I "discovered" my daughter playing online with my "poms" account taking pictures and rating levels out there... I had to take some measures.
Just wondering you know...

That's awful... Can't you change your password through your email somehow? Or contact customer service? Maybe I'm wrong about that...

Edit: oh never mind. I didn't read the part saying you fixed this. At least you were able to reset your password.

Thanks for the responses, guys. The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm praying that it's a bug or glitch. It seems weird to me, though, that the two accounts that were messed up were two of them that people could have guessed the email addy for. And as for the secret question? I stupidly set it to something that any idiot could find out if they watched my youtube videos or read my posts. It was before anyone knew who I was, so I didn't think anything of it. Still, I am praying for it to be a glitch.

And it couldn't have been any of my local friends. I only let two people play on my account: My husband and my friend Patrick, who is as close to me as a family member. And even he only plays on my account when he's over my house. He would know the answer to my secret question, but I could tell you for a fact that he would never do something like that.

The part that doesn't sit well with me is that I received two separate emails on two separate days telling me that my password has been changed. The first came on wednesday to an email I never check, and the second came yesterday while I was sitting around and minding my own business and working on some comic stuff. I was lucky I was right in front of the computer.

It's possible but it useless, PSN login is secured with SSL, even if you will able sniff PS3 you won't be able to read it since it's encoded. Remember Apocalips3? Main reason why PSN login was impossible on that date is because for PS3 at that freaked out clock was thinking that server's SSL certificate (aka sever encryption key) was not yet valid and console it self refused to connect to PSN since it consider server as untrusted device.

Faster hack method to get PSN password is to key-log on PC or password storage of browser. PC login to PSN is also secured by SSL, but keyboard presses not

I have to agree with the above. SSL and TLS oftentimes use RSA encryption, which is military grade (that is, with strong enough keys it would take more energy in the known universe to crack a single keypair).

And I also don't think this was a glitch, mainly because not very many people in the community have complained of a similar problem AND it was two of your accounts.

I don't think you're necessarily facing someone that knows how to hack this sort of heavy-duty system. Even if you are, the likelihood of a hacker using technical methods when your secret answer is easily guessable is unlikely. Just to be on the safe side, though, make sure your password and secret answer are both over 13 characters long. If Sony uses MD5 encryption, anything 13 characters or less can be easily recovered using a rainbow attack. (And no, this has nothing to do with OMG, DOUBLE RAINBOW, as much as it may sound like it ).

Also, keep in mind that sometimes the nicest people you know are subject to seemingly random attacks. I once received some Google Talk IM's from the nicest person I know that said he was stuck in London and needed some money wired to him. He said that his phone was stolen, so I called the phone and quickly found out that it was just a hacker preying on the kindness of others. Moral: no amount of kindness and sense of community is better than a strong password.

On a positive note, I do hope that the perpetrator is just some prankster you know with no malicious intent, and that everything returns to normal. I know that the community here would hate to see you go.

It can also use AES even so it's hard to crack anyway

I hope that the hacker is just one of your friends or some other prankster trying to mess with you. If not, then let's hope the person is hunted down and their PS3 destroyed they get punished by Sony, or whoever.

Personally, I always thought that "security" questions where actually a major loophole, so mine is really obscure, and the answer is random-- the only way to no it would be to read my mind or something. It is, essentially, another password.

"It could me any one of us. It could be me, it could be you, it could even be-"

In all seriousness, this is not good. Once the culprit has targeted a popular person of a community, the rest of the community is in danger. Or possibly other popular people. because you do Creator Rewinds, right?

@xKappax: How many copies of levels have you seen so far? If there's more than umm... I don't know, two maybe, then chances are, it's more likely that someone used some sort of hacking device and ruined your PSN for whatever reason. I just hope that this is some sort bug or a glitch. Even though I don't really know you that much, it's still a shame that you lost your PSN. (And you certainly don't deserve it either) Wish I could help, but I'm currently having Internet access issues. To summarize it, good luck on catching that theif.
