The Neon Bonfire - A short film I directed

Archive: 9 posts

Following up my first "mood-umentary" Snow Night (thread here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=45687-quot-Snow-Night-quot-a-wee-film-by-meself)) - Here is the far more ambitious 5 minute epic The Neon Bonfire.

I've been working on this bad boy for about a week (and change), along with a bit of work on a handful of other short films which will follow soon-ish (I hope).

Hope you guys enjoy. All made in Vancouver, and all real - you're not seeing any acting or staging, it's all real captured stuff, shot and cut in the last week.

Hope you guys enjoy it! If you do, spread it around, like fertilizer, or a disease.

Also, I urge you to click through and watch in HD and fullscreen, as there's a lot of detail to take in, and it's very-very nice when viewed large and loud.

Yup, that's my voice! Fans of the spotlight videos might recognize it, though I'm much more quiet in these films than I am when I'm shouting and crying during the closeups. (Back when I worked on the closeups that is!)

Thanks so much!

This is pretty exciting for me, but the band "Mother Mother", whose song forms the centerpiece of The Neon Bonfire, saw the film and had this to say about it:

Wicked movie!! That was a really fun watch. Such a great depiction of our fair city on a weekend night, and a beautiful take on the music, too.

We're honoured to be a part of it.

Ali, Jasmin, Jere, Molly & Ryan.

I also got a plug at The Boozecan (http://theboozecan.com/post/2997968956/neonbonfire), who called it "a brilliant short film".

But that all being said, there's been little love for the movie so far in terms of numbers. Only 300 views in two weeks, I'm trying to get the word out but I'm getting spent for ideas. I've submitted to reddit and digg. A few hits but nothing that really stuck. Any advice is welcome!

In the meantime, I'm coming along well on my next film, "Warm Places". Stay tuned, I'm thinking one more week and I'll have it done! It's guaranteed to be magical.

I use a Canon T2i - only runs around 800 bucks and that's with a stock 18-55mm zoom lens. Plus SD cards which go for around 40 bucks each.

Most people don't know I'm filming them! With certain circumstances where I know I'm going to be seen and the footage is great so I know I'll use it, I talk to them after getting the shot and ask permission to use it. I can't really ask people first because then whatever I get won't be real, because it won't be candid. When people know there's a camera recording them they act differently, self-conscious. Some people absolutely hate it. I've been flipped off and glared at many a time. If looks could kill I've died a thousand agonizing deaths making these movies.

I always end up noticing these great details I hadn't seen when I was there in person, and it's exciting but I always regret not talking to the people afterwards to get their contact info. I want to show these people the movies they're in (and feel less guilty about "stealing" from them) - I'm just now starting to make a bunch of business cards, so from now on I'll make a habit of at least slipping a card to someone after I get a good shot of them.

Totally man. I used to hated having to "Ask for permission" and walk up to some chump with a release form in hand. It really takes away from the whole vibe, y'know? Especially if it's supposed to be "real world" footage. Contradictory huh?

Thats a good idea about the business cards! Who knows, maybe you'll meet someone who could help you out!
