No one is playing my level, so my plan was to go into a popular level as the game leader, play through a couple of levels with a group that forms with me, and then take them to my level, but I can only ever join other people. If I go to "play on my own" does that mean I ONLY play by myself? No chance of anybody else joining? I take it the only way is to leave to my pod and just hope someone follows?

Sounds like a so-called 'Kaffeefahrt' to me, lol. I'm not really supporting that, but oh well. Uh, about 'Play on my own'... I think Sackpeople can randomly join you - but you have to allow that in the settings. Hope that helps!

Hey, I'm not a fan of this method easier but it's the only way. Or at least that seems so. The only other way would be to spam links all over this forum.

to get more plays what you could do(if not already done) = Post your level in the level showcase on this forum(optional.with some gameplay screenies) some other things to get more play. -A custom bagde, will attract more then a default bagde(or a mm made) -A not to difficult level title, that would be existing out of common things, so it can be searched easy.
