how to make a cursor select something

Archive: 11 posts

I am going to be making a level that requires a player to use an arrow to select actions and when i have an action selected i want it to make a sackbot i click to perform that action.

how would i go about doing this. i do not need a huge guide just a general idea of how i should go about it and what tools i should be using.

also i need to know if it is possible in the first place

I've been thinking of making a tutorial for this.
I'll post here if I make one, but I'm not promising anything yet...

I just made a level that contains a usable cursor and the logic in it is all labeled with notes so its easy to understand. Take a look.

If you need anything adjusted, go ahead and ask me to make it so.
Also, i just threw this together really quickly, so the tutorial is very VERY simple.

The basic premise of clicking as I have done it is to emit invisible Hologram with a key on it labelled 'click' and then have tag sensors set to activate whatever action when they see that key. For moving the cursor, I used 4 Basic Movers hooked up to splitters for greater directional control and easier limiting. You can also make a box around the edge of the screen than has 4 parts - upper, lower, left, right - and each one moves in it's respective direction when touched by the cursor, allowing the view to be moved by placing the cursor at the edge of the screen.2011-01-30 12:13:00

You actually only need 1 advanced mover to do this. Also, using impact sensors gives you more control than emitting stuff. Take a look at my level that i posted 3 comments up. The logic in all of it is actually quite simple.

You're very welcome. And thanks for the credit! Much appreciated.

I'll admit I am not the best creator ever, but I believe the best way to make a cursor is to attach an advanced mover in a microchip to a cursor shaped holographic material. attach a DCS to the microchip and set it to recieve.

Make a place for the transmitting DCS and set it to transmit (Obviously).

Place a sensor on all of the things you want to be clickable and set the DCS so that whenever one presses the X button (Or your button of choice) it emits a tag attached to some dark matter or an invible piece of holographic matter that dissapears immediately.

Make sure you actually remember to connect the sensor to the thing you wish to activate and also set up a camera system (shouldn't be so hard you can't figure it out yourself. I would write a tutorial on how to do that, but there are countless tutorials out there on cameras, and they are not my specialty). You should be able to figure out the rest yourself.

That used to be the method in LBP1. Two days ago, by accident I found that you can put a wire onto a Tag and switch it on and off. No more need to emit tags.

The reason I was using for seperate Movers was that I found I got more fluid movement in certain cases and it was easier to get basic box selection working. It also allowed me to disable individual directions when I wanted to limit where the camera would go, which was nice. It's fully possible to use an Advanced Mover, but I chose to use Basics instead. Also, turning keys on and off is a very vaid point. I was also using Selectors over toggles so I could have a global deselect all, but a Toggle works too. [This was for an RTS conspet which I threw together.]2011-01-30 21:47:00
