Custom Sticker for LBP2 using PSEye: Any tips for noobs?

Archive: 9 posts

I have a Playstation Eye, and I want to make some custom stickers with it; I actually plan to find images on the web and take pics of them. I've never did anything like that before (I've made custom stickers, but never with the Eye), so do any of you grandmaster sticker artists have any pointers for a first time PSEye user?2011-01-29 13:01:00

First of all,
be REALLY WEALLY sure that those images dont have copyright,
Else you can bet you behind on it that MM will moderate the level (or at least they should).
(At least ask people permission, you wouldnt like it if someone stole your level either amiright?)

But, if you do want to use pics from the web, or self made work and use a ps-eye..
The most optimal and best way (besides modding a SLR 8MegaPixel (or more) to act like a psEye) Is this:

1. Have a very big box and paint it black (matte) or overlay it with black non-reflective wrapping paper.

2. Get a few desk-lights or spotlights and try to light your object (or printed out image) as good as you can without making the image look washed out by the lights
(preferable use a diffuser on those lights, baking-paper will do the trick as it can also stand high heats and you dont want anything near the lights to start burning)

3. place your eye directly in front of the image you chose to capture.
(make sure the camera isnt on the floor, but raised so its level with the image.. this nullifies image-stretching)

4. Make the image, and see if you need to tweak your lighting, camera distance, and angle of both the camera and the image.

5. make the perfect shot.

6. ????

7. Profit.

I dont think anybody ever wrote this way of making images,
but from a photographers point of view this would be the most optimal way of getting a decent image.

On that note,
you might want to increase the contrast of the image before printing it out to make sure that the camera gets all the detail.
You might also want to use printing paper thats matte (non reflective) to make sure that any light doesnt get caught in the camera and result in white spots on your image.

I dont have an eye-cam but i am an experienced photographer,
and if I would make images with the eye-cam, I would use my mini-studio.

And replace my high-end camera with the eye-toy. (Or pay a decent modder to make my SLR camera act like the pseye.)

Hope that helps

What I have done is take my laptop and set it at a 90 angle. Then take one of my tripods and mount the PS3 Eye to it. Then I basically do steps 3 - 5 above. Since the laptop screen is already lit, there isn't really a need for special lighting except insuring no hot spots on the laptop screen or reflections. There is also a bonus as you are guaranteed a flat image, unless you dog used your screen as a chew toy or something. lol

...however, even at that the PS3 eye doesn't make a great image in LBP. Kinda sad really.

Omg Jww, really?
I would never ever do that in my life.
First of all because a screen has so many lightsources that the camera has a hard time focussing on them,
second of all even matte tv/laptop/whatever screens are at least slightly reflective, so thats a nono.
third of all.. you will lose.. so.. so many detail making shots of tv/monitor/whatever..
Heck, i think most photographers would do an epic facepalm.jpg for your suggestion.

making photos of a screen from a tv/monitor/laptop.. O_o
sure if its an end result it can get what you want.. but if you still need those photos for editing/material (or in this case sticker) usage..
I have to say "computer says no"

But then again,
I got quite high standards for the tools I work with.

lol.. I know what you mean... If I had the choice, I would rather use one of my Nikon D3's and pro lenses in your setup.

However... the PS3 eye is a terrible device, captures horribly poor images into LBP and after several attempts at light boxing as you suggest versus just shooting from the screen, it is actually about the same and a bit easier.

Really, that poor a quality?
And I assume thatlbp itself also compresses the pictures even more :/

Would need someone who can rewrite the code in your camera, and make the ps3 think its actually a pseye..
would cost a lot, but in theory its possible.
but if lbp compresses the photo, you wont gain much detail i assume.,

Yes.. I am afraid so. I haven't tried the ps eye as a stand alone camera off a pc, but yes, lbp compresses the holy heck out of the images. To give you an example, imagine shooting a res chart with the thing. Instead of the lines pairs looking like nice crisp lines, it will look like you used crayons and drew them on a rough sidewalk. Pretty bleak..

So for ease of use and not having to worry about lots of lights, printing, and setting up a light box... I cheat.

However... I have not tried shooting something HUGE. I might try again sometime and use some B3 sized paper. If I do, I will let you know.
