I want to make lightning

Archive: 8 posts

I want to make lightning like in the story level current affairs and I need to sync it so that 3 go off 1 after another I guess I could make an emitter emit a piece of glass that has been electrified, then have a destroyer tied to a timer and a battery that way it goes away, I have also read something about a hologram tool but I dunno where it is or how to use it. Can I get some suggestions?2011-01-29 04:58:00

Hologram can be found in the basic material. I think the level did lightning by emitting electrified hologram. I haven't tried it yet myself but I'm pretty sure that's how it's done. Using a hologram is important because you can't emit a solid object when there's another solid object at the same location.2011-01-29 05:02:00

so it would it emit and then go away? That way I wouldn't have to put a destroyer on it.2011-01-29 05:33:00

Use the sequencer and emitters. Place the emitters at the points you want them to go off in the sequencer, set the lifetime for a short amount of time, set the sequencer to repeat or have it acitvated by other logic to get it to go more than once. Should work. 2011-01-29 06:00:00

You wouldn't need to emit/destroy hologram. You can turn it on and off, and it goes invisible when it's off. You can just have your 3 lightning bits and hook a sequencer to them so they continuously cycle until you turn the sequencer off.2011-01-29 07:50:00

The emitters work just as well with maybe less work because you can set the emitted obj. to destroy so I just made 1 emitter set it up then copied the other 2, all I had to do was tie a sound effect to it and lethalize it then save it .2011-01-29 09:19:00

But thanks for the different way, I will keep that in mind, I need to use a sequencer anyways.2011-01-29 09:21:00

emiters do work, but not as well. I would say you should do a combination approach mixed in with some randomizers.

Basically, draw out a few different lightning bolts in holo material, then capture them and set each as the object of an emitter. Instead of activating them directly, activate a randomizer that chooses one at random.

Lightning rarely ever just fires off and vanishes, so why not make it flash a few times to make it look more real? If you attach a tag sensor to the lightning bolts, you can then use a sequencer to flash the bolts and play the thunder sounds to make it look like the real deal.

add a randomizer and you can get some really good efects if you make more than one sequence.
