Making emitted objects follow a cursor
Archive: 12 posts
Ok, so I'm at a complete loss. I've searched and searched and tried different things I've found but can't get anything to work. Either my emitted object flies straight with no regard for the cursor, or the emitted object travels no further than where it is emitted. Scenario: I have a helicopter and I want it to fire both missiles from a missle pod, and bullets from a machine gun. I want both of these objects to go towards a holographic cursor that I made. Pretty much exactly like the camel level in the story mode except with two different types of ammunition. I have my cursor and weapons working how I want them to, but I can not seem to get the emitter to work right. I've been trying different things all day with no luck. My holo cursor has a green tag on it and i tried to make my missiles and bullets have a follow tag on them. I have done follow with movers, follow with rocket rotators, look at rotators, and every combination I can think of, and like I said; they either emit nowhere near where the cursor is, or just emit and stay there. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm going crazy trying to figure it out. Thanks. | 2011-01-29 02:26:00 Author: Unknown User |
I don't understand what the specific problem is - What you're trying to do with the logic and movers sounds totally correct. There's no way I can think of that would work otherwise. Here's what I'm thinking: Projectiles have a Follower and a Rocket Rotator attached to them, and the cursor has a Tag of a certain color. The projectiles' Followers are set to Follow Tag Instead with the color matching that of the Tag that you put on the cursor. Is that what you tried? If so, and it didn't work, either A) Make sure the Tag colors match up, or B) reassure that your dampening on any Anti-Gravity Tweakers aren't at 100%. | 2011-01-29 02:33:00 Author: SLS10 Posts: 1129 |
Yeah, I don't understand either. Crosshairs: -Microchip --blue tag --gyro --anti-gravity ---AG 100% ---damp 25% -- -zero buoy 0% --advanced mover Emitter 1: -speed 25.0 -angular 0 Emitter 2: -speed 0.0 -angular 0 Projectile 1: material - hologram -microchip --follower ---max speed 1.0 ---strength 60% ---follow tag instead - yes - blue --rocket rotator ---speed - 360 ---strength - 50% --impact sensor -> destroyer Projectile 1: material - missle -thruster --acceleration 25% --currently on - yes -microchip --follower ---max speed 100.0 ---strength 100% ---follow tag instead - yes - blue --rocket rotator ---speed - 360 ---strength - 50% --impact sensor -> destroyer Please tell me I'm just missing something stupid and simple. I am at a complete loss. Both objects emit and travel, but they do not track towards the cursor in any way. And yes, the tag sensor is within range of the tag on the cursor. Also, if I add anti gravity to the emitted objects, they do not travel, they simply emit to the spot chosen and stay there. | 2011-01-29 04:46:00 Author: Unknown User |
I had a very similar problem of tag sensors not reding th tags when they clearly came into contact. All I did was slow down my projectile with the tag and it worked fine. Try that. But it might look too slow for bullets, The highest I could get mine to work was 11ish and yours is all the way at 25 so try slowing it down. Good luck | 2011-01-29 04:55:00 Author: Jboy1995 Posts: 48 |
Ok. So I Went back and played "Got The Hump" which was the basis for my idea. I realized that it is actually the cursor that is destroying the objects, not the emitted object. Looks like the cursor is emitting a holographic circle that is lethalized. So that is taken care of. But, for the life of me I can not get objects to follow the emitter. I tried what Jboy suggested and slowed my emitter down to around 10 but it still just shoots straight no matter where I have the cursor. When I replayed the camel level the lasers shot fairly quickly so I don't think that is the issue. I also tried to attach the emitter to a rotating piece of holo material with a look at follower but the piece won't rotate. I'm about ready to give up. I've already put 12+ hours trying to figure it all out with no luck. If someone has a chance can you please mess with the emitter and try to get it to follow a tag and tell me what I'm missing. Thanks. | 2011-01-29 17:40:00 Author: Unknown User |
Sorry I couldn't help before, I looked back at your list of what you've already done and everything looks right, I can't figure it out either. The only thing I can think is maybe your using a tag sensor instead of a tag so it's not following, but your list says just tag so I'm not sure.... Give me a minute I'll try to make a rough of my own and see if I notice a problem. | 2011-01-29 17:53:00 Author: Jboy1995 Posts: 48 |
Well, I did as I said and went and made my own. I did exactly as you settings say and my projectiles wouldn't follow either. But I found the problem, the projectile is using the emitters speed and shooting past the crosshairs, and since the emitters speed is all the way at 25 and the emitted is set to shoot straight, it goes straight. If you make the speed of your FOLLOWER equal to the emitters (25 in this case) it works perfectly! You may need to also turn up the rocket rotator speed. | 2011-01-29 18:26:00 Author: Jboy1995 Posts: 48 |
Cursor/crosshairs has a blue tag. Projectiles have no tag sensor, but a look at follower with "follow tag instead" selected. Whch is also selected blue. Thanks for your help and hopefully we can figure something out. | 2011-01-29 18:28:00 Author: Unknown User |

Look at my second post after that one about the tags Sorry about that. My post didn't go through the first time and I retried without seeing your post. Anyways, tried what you said and still no luck. I'm so confused. Can you tell me your exact set up? I have my projectile with a look at follower set to follow a blue tag and a rocket rotator. I set up my follower speed and emitter speed both at 25. My rotator is at 60% and 360. | 2011-01-29 19:05:00 Author: Unknown User |
No idea then.... Unless it's because you have two rotators i don't know why that would matter though.... Strange | 2011-01-29 19:11:00 Author: Jboy1995 Posts: 48 |
Ok. So as strange as it sounds, my tag on the cursor was defective. I put another emitter on a piece of dark matter and moved it around to see if it followed and it didn't. Deleted the tag and replaced and it worked fine. I also was able to put the emitter on a rotating material that was hidden and put a look at follower on there and it followed the cursor just fine. I was never quite able to get the actual projectile to track the cursor, but this still serves the purpose. We'll see what I can figure out with the missiles. Thank you so much for your help trying to figure this all out. | 2011-01-29 19:52:00 Author: Unknown User |
