25th Anniversary of Challenger Disaster - where were you?

So today is the 25th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger exploding back in 1986. I know for me it was a significant moment in history as my family were big into the US space program and watched almost all the launches and landings. This particular flight was special because it had a civilian teacher aboard, Christa McAuliffe, who had been selected from thousands of applicants.... one of which was my father. So when the orbiter exploded to my 6th grade brain it triggered the thought, "that could have been my dad." It made me see their deaths from the perspective of their family and not just a national tragedy.

I was in music class and was looking forward to going to the library to watch the coverage of the launch that the librarians had taped when our teacher came in and said there had been an accident. That the astronauts had died and we were going to watch the live coverage in the library. I immediately began bawling and ran to the bathroom where my teacher had to come console me. I was a sensitive kid and it was just overwhelming to me. I ended up calling my mother who in her motherly wisdom said, well, you can cry at school or you can cry at home. You might as well stay at school. (she's so practical) So the next day, my teacher gave me an envelope with a plate block of stamps on it featuring the space shuttle that had been issued a few years earlier. He had gone to the post office and had it cancelled/stamped on January 28th, 1986. The day of the accident. To this day it is a cherished momento of mine.

So any of you old enough to remember this event? Where were you?

I wasn't born yet, by a couple years.
Despite that, I can still see the tragedy for what it was and understand just how devastating it must have been to the country. My mother though, as a member of the United States army and supporter of the Space program, remembers it well and the aftermath of it.

We've at least took serious lessons from it and have learned how to prevent future tragedies such as these. Lets also remember the heroes that lost their lives today. True heroes of the country that will always be remembered.

I was in science class 5th grade. It didn't really hit me until I saw the episode of Punky Brewster about the shuttle exploding.

After the accident my very young son asked me if people liked it when things like this happened. I told him no...people hate it when these thing happen. He said he was just wondering since everyone was glued to the TV and kept watching it over and over. I found it strangely creative what he observed in our behavior. His mind was too young to understand that we were watching it in horror and fascination...not for enjoyment.2011-01-28 23:16:00

Hmmm yeah I wasn't born yet.....I wasn't even a twinkle in my mother's eye. It bugs me when people get sad over this stuff. The way I see things is that if someone were to die in my family I would be sad of course, but then I would just treat it as any other memory. Wouldn't be sad about it..it's just there, and besides I'm pretty sure that person wouldn't want the family to be crying over them, heshe would want them to be happy :3 So I always try to remain cheerful Would this be called denial? idk, but it definitely works for me!! I wonder what they were thinking in their last few moments....

Btw Your story was touching Morgana Really nice....

Maybe Im just a kid and dont understand much but after reading that...I do know what it feels like to lose someone you love, family, father or even a big brother..I really dont know what to say cause I guess my words wont sound mature but...well, Im not going to feel sorry for you but instead look up to you ^___^ I know its hard..sometimes it gets worse..but im sure wherever they are, there with you always, aslong as you keep them alive inside your heart, when you think about it...there not really dead, its not denying it but you feel it and you can tell, that there with you wherever you go and wherever you are.

anyway >__< wow im crying lol
sorry hehe but yeah, sorry if maybe I dont make sense >_< im not good with word, my english isnt that good XD.

I saw it happen while I was in elementary school too, I'm pretty sure several classrooms had been rounded up to see the launch & saw the disaster live as it occured.2011-01-29 02:17:00

I was eight years from being born yet. Lol.

It's quite unfortunate that these types of accidents occur, but it does bring us together in my opinion. For example, for us Americans, when the tragedy of 9/11 surfaced, I remember how we all came together to comfort families affected by the disaster.
