My reasons for holding on to LBP1

Archive: 19 posts

First of all let me stress that I love LBP2. I love the story mode, I love the create mode, I love the online play and the mini-games. I just thought I'd post my reasons for keeping LBP1 on my shelf, especially after hearing that some LBP2'ers are starting to ditch the first game completely...

95% of everything from the first game is in the sequel. Yeah, I get that. But that remaining 5% still matters to me. The original story mode is something I still find charming and fun to play through even though I've collected 100% and, arguably, the story mode in LBP2 is "superior" (ie. more ambitious and complex). LBP1 just has a "feel" to it that the sequel doesn't quite match, a unique magic that was conveyed via that first demo way back in 2007. Mind you, I am a bit of a "retro" gamer with a beard that touches the ground, so I don't know how common my experience is: I continue to play Uncharted 1 despite also owning 2. I will occasionally play games like the original Sonic the Hedgehog or Wonder Boy III just 'cos I'm a fan of the genre and I appreciate them for what they are. I've also resisted the temptation to fill my latest creations in LBP2 with grappling hooks and creatinators just because they are new and exciting.

Sorry if this has been covered in other threads. I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Well, it's true. LBP2 is new, hot, flashy and awesome, but LBP1 has a certain charm to it. That charm can't be replaced by anything else.
It's what has kept me from trading it in.

The game I keep going back to, even if it means jumping through a few hoops to get it running on my computer, is Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. It's an old game (1992) but I love it. I am working on a project for LBP2 wherein me and the only two other people I could find on the whole internet (that are interested in helping) translate, pixel for pixel, the first level, the entire story, and the final boss battle into LBP2.
That way I can keep playing it.
And LBP1, of course.

Story Mode
Community levels that don't work in lbp 2
It's worth very little selling it second hand

I never trade in any games, so keeping lbp is a no brainer for me. I know I'll want to play the story levels again someday.2011-01-28 22:15:00

I prefer to play lbp1 levels in lbp1 instead of lbp2, I have many games I never trade, some games and consoles are absolute classics that should be always be kept, I still play n64 games just because they are one in a lifetime quality games.2011-01-28 23:36:00

Most of my PSN friends from LBP1 haven't got LBP2, and probably won't for quite some time. I still often play it just to hang out with them. And also to be able to make use of the cool glitches that were patched in LBP2.2011-01-29 00:00:00

I'm finding it hard to understand the way things work in lbp2. I was only just grasping the knowledge of level creating with simple materials, while now I'm struggling to create or start anything that anyone with standards at sub par with lbp2 ATM will even give a look at. I hardly know how to use the new tools despite having played through all 52 of the tutorials. I thought that would help, but stephen fry just can't inform me well enough! Don't get me wrong, I love everythig about lbp2, but it's just made it a tad harder for developing creators to grasp the knowledge of the tools and game settings they have added to it. Lbp had that inspiring, felt, and button stiched together world that lbp2 doesn't seem to capture as well as it's predicessor did.2011-01-29 05:03:00

I'm keeping hold of it as well. You never know. Maybe someday I will feel like making a level in one of my LBP1 level spaces. Plus theres the story mode too. Also I like the pod background from LBP1. I wish it was an option for the LBP2 pod.2011-01-29 05:10:00

it's all about sentimental value. I've had a lot of good times with friends playing lbp1. I even keep all my created levels so I can go back and have a good laugh at the things I made.2011-01-29 06:11:00

I don't see why that can't release the LBP1 background as a DLC somewhere down the line...

I'm holding onto it, just because I only have 98% of the prizes in the game. That, and I plan to make any levels that don't use any LBP2 elements in LBP1 to conserve my LBP2 space.2011-02-05 08:12:00

LBP2 is still new it has its time to grow but trading in lbp1 with all of its original story great characters and extemely fun platforming is just bizzare

In the end, it all depends on each one's likes and dislikes. I still haven't got LBP2 and probably won't anytime soon. I believe that if LBP2 has the same as LBP1 AND more, better, wider choices for creations, then we should stick with it. I personally decided not to create anything else until I get LBP2. And that is because the levels I made never got past 30 plays. If I stick with LBP1, its more likely that my creations will pass unnoticed, because of the LBP2 boom, meaning that all the hard work I put into making them will be almost useless. Sequels are often not the same, and the more sequels, it just gets worse. Just look pokemon, final fantasy, megaman... The development team have to be careful not to lose the essence of the game, and that might happen to LBP in the future. Still, tough I Have not played LBP2, I have seen videos and other stuff, and I think it has the same feel as LBP1, the essence of the game remains intact, in my opinion. Of course, until I play it, I can't really judge.2011-02-10 19:38:00

I don't see myself ever letting go of my LBP1 disk, but wow, I just had to go back to LBP1 to work on a few of my levels that were having issues in LBP2 and it was painful. I've completely dove into the new logic circuits in LBP2 and to have to retrofit some of my old LBP1 logic was enough to turn me off of creating anything in LBP1 again.

Not to mention having to carefully carve away the front portion with the corner editor so I could get to stuff in the background.

Like others have said, LBP1 has it's charm, I can see myself playing through the story levels again in the future, and playing some of the community levels that don't work or render quite right in the new engine. Plus, one day I will get that Party Person Trophy so I can get my platinum (not that I was trying, I just loved the game so much I happened to earn all the trophies except that one).

So yes, there is a permanent spot on my shelf for LBP1, sitting right between my LBP2 bookends where I hope it to be joined by LBP3 and beyond.

I couldnt trade in my LBP1 for 3 reasons.
1. Some of my levels just dont work on LBP2 for some reason.
2. Im one trophy away from a platting it. (100% prize bubbles ive got 99%)
3. I just couldnt say goodbye to a game that blew me away, the second i loaded it in for the first time.
Little Big Planet2 has all the looks and brains but Little Big Planet1 has the heart.

I'm holding on to LBP1 for nostalgic reasons. It goes up on the shelf along with other games that I'll never trade in:

- Bioshock
- Fallout 3
- Metal Gear Solid 4
- Heavy Rain

LBP1 helped me through a tough breakup, even though it was just an escape from reality. Nevertheless, it helped me take a timeout from the mental torment I was going through at the time.

With LBP2, I don't know what's happening to me. It's something else. It's more like a drug.
