Director's Cut

Archive: 25 posts

Like a movie level, but you get to direct it! Pick the right camera at the right time and you'll be well on your way to a Sackademy Award nomination!

It's fairly short and there are only four cameras, but I hope you'll like it. Though I enjoyed making it, I was never sure how much fun others would have playing it. So please let me know!

UPDATE: I've added another scene where you get to apply a few simple sound effects. As with the first scene, I'm sure a large chunk of the fun comes from the scene itself, but I hope you'll like the new gameplay. If you can call it that.

(While not strictly an F4F level, if you play my level and leave a nice comment it's likely I'll have a go at some of your creations, because that's what I do generally.)

Thanks!

Great level dude funny I found this through a comment you left on Johnee's blast radius level I enjoyed the level dude I was a really cool concept and it felt pretty authentic too, I actually was a director of something! It was pretty easy to pick up and I didn't have any nitpicks about this. Loved the level and hearted it, I hope you continue to make more like this because it was awesome. 2011-01-28 15:36:00

I've already played Let's Drive with Sir Clive and posted in its thread, but I've only now seen that you created Sega Outrun Insane Car Journey too! I also played and liked that one a long time ago.

Glad you like my level

I left a review on your level, I loved it, it was so funny and so well made, the characters were so funny and creative, I laughed so hard when the Drunk guy trew the botterl at me XD, very very well made. I hope you make a sequel, full movie of that grumpy guy.

Great job

Someone on my level just suggested I add more scenes. I think I definitely will at some point, but right now I'm just enjoying the (relatively modest) attention my level's getting!2011-01-29 13:19:00

I really like the idea behind this level. I've added it to my queue - I'll tell you what I think in a day or so 2011-01-31 19:49:00

I really liked this concept (not just because im a film student!)

The idea itself is very cool, and i think you did it justice. However there are a few problems i thought hindered the experience.

First off, i found myself restarting after the first play through because i hadnt managed to remember which camera was operated by which button. I know you had the controlinator tags at the bottom of the screen, but whilst i was busy watching them to get a grip on which button did what, the clock was ticking and i ended up with a bad score first run through. An idea to improve this: you could try having a mini HUD at the bottom of the screen with the required button for each camera, and a symbol or piece of text describing its action. Or you could try a timer that changes depending on the suitability of the shot. Nevertheless, after i understood it, it was great fun and worked fine.

Im sure this took you a long while to create, but i would have liked to see it stretch on a little longer, maybe with two or three scenes instead of one.

I also thought that the background was mostly too simple, it doesn't affect the level in anyway, but it just seemed a little plain.

Despite my criticisms, i was very impressed by the idea and the way you pulled it off, and if you plan on making a sequel, I'm sure it will be even better.

Great job!

If you have the time, check out my mini-game, level in my sig.

Hey I got a chance to play this last night. Again, I loved the idea behind it. However, I had a couple issues:

- like Steve above me, I couldn't remember which button was which. Even though it said that on the bottom, I still couldn't remember who was which character. Pretty bad I guess because there were only two characters lol So maybe that's my fault.
- I also felt that the 'scene' could use more detail if possible.
- Have you considered voice acting? I think that would only help the player because then he/she wouldn't have to worry about reading. I found myself not understanding the story because I was so worried which camera to pick.

That being said, I've never seen a level like this before. So great job on originality, and overall, it was really well done

Very useful feedback in the last two posts, thanks, guys!

- I'll definitely add some decoration to the set.
- I'll also certainly add at least another scene or two, depending how the thermometer holds up (it was really low for a long time, then suddenly shot up to halfway or slightly over, and I wasn't quite sure why).
- A permanent camera HUD would be easy enough, I'm sure, so that's going on the checklist too!
- I'm not so keen to do voice acting. I might give it a go, but I feel there's enough character in the gibberish voices. Of course, having to read the text at the same time as doing the cameras isn't ideal, so as I said, I might give it a go.

Out of interest, it didn't take me that long to make. I worked on it over about three days, totalling about sixteen hours or so, at a guess. I thought of doing several scenes early on, but I was too impatient to publish! I've now learned from the process and it won't take a huge amount of effort to make more scenes, beyond having to write them! I plan to do a sequel, too, maybe with more to do than just change cameras, but we'll see.

I'll have a browse of your levels, Steve and Powershifter

No problem! It's amazing how that only took you 16 hours. If it would have been LBP1, see ya next month Anywho, I currently don't have any LBP2 levels. I'm working on something, but it's at the very beginning stages. It may take a month or two before I'm ready to publish. However, if you like, I recommend checking out Celestia. The link is in my sig. Cheers!

Way ahead of you!

I spent most of today making a mediocre Versus level. I can't quite remember what caused me to do that. I suppose because it had to be done some time on the path to Platinum.

I did a little bit on Director's Cut. I changed the controls slightly, so hopefully they're more intuitive now. I also added a bit of decoration for the set, and fixed a couple of little bugs I just discovered. Tomorrow I'll have a think about a new scene! As I said, new scenes may have to wait for the sequel, depending on the thermometer.

I was really impressed with this level. Very well thought out and executed game play
Pros: Unique and silly. I personally thought the funniest part was the older actor throwing the liquor bottle at me. The level sucks you in and it made me feel like I was playing a game, not a level.

Cons: I couldn't really find any except for at the end the door wasn't giving me any points being open with the wind sound while every one was coming in for the party

Suggestions: I would love to see more of these levels but with different movies/tv shows but still with humor being the thrust. I thought of perhaps a war movie where you signal the explosions at the right time. Or a sci-fi level ala star trek where you hit the sounds/effects for the different scenes. The whole thing reminded me a little of that pc game The Movies:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mHUSV2lATE
I really liked it and I want to see more.

Thanks for your great comments, Siljin

It was intentional that the open door stops giving points towards the end. It was either that or make the player hold the button right up until the very end of the film, which I thought would be a bit awkward.

I've had a lot of good suggestions (yours among them) and I think I'm about ready to make a sequel. I've still got lots of interesting levels (again, yours among them!) in my queue to get through, but after that I'll start playing around in Create mode and see what I can do.

PS I had The Movies back in the day! I think after a while I was put off by the large scope and range of things you could create. That shouldn't be a problem with my levels, though!

This level was great! Gave it a yay and a heart cos its so unique and the scenes were really well done. You should try to expand it, maybe a third scene where you add special effects at the right time like lightening, fire or an explosion!? just a thought. anyway great job and Ill def play again if you add more or make a sequel2011-02-14 13:54:00

Just a little notification that a sequel is in production. It's taking a bit longer than the original, both in terms of actual days and working hours, but hopefully it'll be worth it in the end. Once again, I'm having a lot of fun making it so it won't be a total waste if everyone hates the level when it's published!

It's still a little way away from being published right now, but this is just a heads-up. Thanks and bye!
