how do i make an electic arc?

Archive: 20 posts

I am creating a level where there are high voltage power lines throughout. I want to make it so that when the player is in a certain range of the transformer, the electricity will arc to them and kill them. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance!2011-01-28 02:22:00

To make an actual arc-looking thing hazard would be a lot of work, but here's a simple solution. Wit ha basic player sensor around the lines, have it emit a quick moving lightning bolt appearing glass piece with a followers chip. Make sure it's electrified and can move between layers. ****, I want to do that now.2011-01-28 02:25:00

Why bother with old school emitters and glass? The hologram and leathalizer tools would be a great solution for this, just use some player sensors or impact sensors in conjunction with the previously mentioned tools, and you should be good to go 2011-01-28 02:47:00

I like emitters..... also, it gives a greater feel of it actually traveling, instead of just shocking. If you want to do that, the good ol' tiny dark matter would do the same thing.2011-01-28 02:50:00

If you wanted to be picky, there's the fact that dark matter and glass are physical, meaning that objects would actually collide with and prevent your 'lightning' from emitting, where as hologram is non physical, allowing objects to pass through it. And anyway, if you wanted to be technical, electricity travels so quickly that it gives the illusion of appearing.2011-01-28 03:03:00

Well, appearance is everything, illusion or not. And the glass would be what is emitted. Something gets within reach of the wire, wire emits a tracking glass lightning bolt, dead.2011-01-28 03:09:00

Alright, appearance is everything? Something gets in range of wire, hologram is slowly turned on using a timer and the speed input, leathalizer turns on, dead. Alright, what are you doing this weekend? Just for fun, we can see who can make the better looking arc effect using each method. Just a little friendly competition, it'll be fun! What do you say?2011-01-28 03:15:00

Sounds a little more intense than friendly, but fun nonetheless. I won't take it too seriously. As a rule, I have to use an emitter, and can not use holograms. You have to use a hologram, and can not use an emitter. The appearance of the wire does not matter. I'll probably decorate it anyway. I had another project to work on, but I was still thinking things out anyway. A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES2011-01-28 03:20:00

Of course! I'm not a competitive person, so I could really care less, I just thought it might be fun I'll send you a friend request when I get a chance, is that ok? I've never been in a contest like this before, if you can even call it that! Good luck! Also, when should we do this? Would we both enter create mode and create them at the same time, or do we make them in advance? Hmmm... Any ideas? Yea, sorry if that sounded the least bit hostile, I promise, it wasn't intended 2011-01-28 03:26:00

I would just make it casually, I have a Chem midterm tomorrow, so I'll probably do some sketches while I wait for the buses. It shouldn't take very long to make it if you plan it out first.2011-01-28 03:29:00

Sorry to hijack this thread, but could you two post the results of your competition. I'm making a Lightning themed Tower Defense level, and one of the turrets is a Tesla Coil. The arc feature that you guys produce would be AWESOME. It doesn't have to be perfect, I only want to see if I can use the concept (I'll probably make my own based on the designs you two make, but I'll give credit to both of you if it works out and I use its concept).

I've made my own already, but seeing how other people do it might help me modify mine to make it better. Anyway, mine looks awful, so ANY change would be for the better, lol.

I would help...but really not sure what this is all about, anyone mind posting a pic of what's been attempted to eb done here?
(Its not that you're writting it in a non-undeerstandable manner, its me who is unable to think up and nuderstand what's being said atm.)

They're making a device which "zaps" the thing that activates it. The 'zap' is supposed to appear to be lightning, and 2 people have started a competition to see who's method of creating it is more useful (just testing concepts, no serious competition).

I want to use this to make my Tesla Coil turret in my tower defense level, since the lightning action is exactly what a Tesla coil does.

Instead of using an emitter, try this:

Create an arc shape out of Halo material and electrify it. Set it to 0% birghtness so it will be invisible for now (it does show in Create mode though, but don't worry). Create a flat piece of 0% Halo and attach that with a bolt to your electrically charged danger area (assuming it is spherical for a moment). Glue the arc to it so it will appear as if the arc is shooting out of there.

Then stick a Point At rotator to the flat piece so that it will always point in the direction of the player. Add a player proximity sensor to the danger object that spans the reach of the arc and hook it up to the arc itself; now, when the player enters the hot zone, the arc will touch him, show up and, because it is electrified, electrocute the player.

There is a downside to this approach and that is that the arc itself is of a fixed length; if the player somehow gets closer to the danger object than the arc is long, the arc will appear to overshoot the player. The player will still be killed, though, if it touches.

Sound effects on activation can make this better. More complex logic could be added to only briefly show the arc when activated: you'd need something of a memory switch, like a 1-count Counter, followed by a Timer to facilitate a cooldown.

Try the basic idea first

Additionally, one could add another (smaller) rotating arc that does not point at the player but has its Rotator (or an Engine bolt) hooked up to some form o randomizer, I reckon. It wouldn't be too hard, I guess, to create ambient discharges with a bit of logic....

As a matter of fact, I think I am going to make this and share it!

That is insanely brilliant. Epilepsy alert, though.

I finished the concept level. Look for 8E47T by MuffimMan. I look forward to seeing your submission! Also, I overdecorated! 2011-01-30 23:49:00
